Fort Valley State CEO joins Division II Presidents Council

Oscar L. Prater, president of Fort Valley State University, has been named to the Division II Presidents Council.

He replaces John T. Wolfe Jr. of Savannah State University as a Region 2 representative.

Prater became president at Fort Valley State in 1990. He previously was vice-president for administrative services and professor of mathematics at Hampton University.

He also has been an administrator and instructor at Rappahannock Community College in Virginia and a teacher in the Williamsburg, Virginia, public school system.

Prater is the author of a number of publications, including a statistical analysis titled "The Status of Black Americans in the Professions of Law and Medicine." He also has made numerous professional presentations based upon his writings and teaching experiences in various levels of public and private education.

He has been honored with selection for "Who's Who Among Black Americans" and received the Outstanding Man of the Year Award from Omega Psi Phi Fraternity of Newport News, Virginia.

Prater earned a bachelor of science degree in mathematics at Talladega College and a master of science degree in mathematics at Hampton. He also holds a master of teaching science degree in physics and a doctorate in education administration from the College of William and Mary.
