Hardman takes over Hawaii swim teams

Scott Hardman, assistant swimming coach at Hawaii for the past nine years, has been promoted to head men's and women's swimming coach. Hardman succeeds Daniel Arakaki, who took an administrative position within the athletics department after 10 years as head coach.

Hardman swam for the Rainbows from 1979 through 1982 and was cocaptain of the squad with Arakaki in his senior year. He was the first recipient of the Coaches Award in 1982 and also was voted most inspirational by his teammates for three consecutive seasons -- 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Hardman has worked with the Hawaii swimming program as a part-time assistant during his nine years on the coaching staff, working primarily with the sprint freestyles group. He also has served as an assistant compliance coordinator in the academics office.

Arakaki closed out his coaching career with a combined overall record of 100-126 for the men's and women's swimming teams.

REPRESENTATIVE

Kathleen Knafl appointed faculty athletics representative at Illinois-Chicago. Knafl is a professor in the department of maternal child nursing and director of graduate studies and associate dean for research in the College of Nursing.

Harold "Sonny" Watkins Jr. appointed athletics director at McNeese State. Watkins, who has served as interim AD since last fall, also has been associate AD, assistant AD and women's basketball coach at McNeese State ... Joe Roberson, AD at Michigan, announced he will retire as soon as a replacement can be named. Roberson has been AD since September 1993 ... Florida International selected Orville "Butch" Henry III as director of intercollegiate athletics and recreation. Henry comes to Florida International after spending the past 14 years at Arizona, most recently as associate AD ... Bruce Baumgartner appointed acting AD at Edinboro, succeeding Jody Mooradian, who resigned to become assistant AD at Northeastern. Baumgartner, who has been head wrestling coach for seven years, will relinquish his coaching duties until an AD is selected.

Gerald O'Dell, AD at Cincinnati since April 1994, resigned. Tony Perizigian, vice-provost at the university for 27 years, was named acting AD ... Scott Kilgallon named AD at Southern Vermont, where he also will be head men's and women's cross country coach ... Frank Millerick promoted to AD at Babson. He will retain his duties as head baseball coach. He has been an associate AD since 1994 ... Jerry Cole, AD at Jacksonville State for 23 years, announced his retirement at the end of the 1997-98 academic year. Cole is the only full-time AD the university has had, taking the position March 1, 1974. He was a four-year letterwinner in football at the university from 1953 to 1956, playing both offensive and defensive tackle.

John Montgomery, major gifts director for athletics at Southern Methodist during the past year, promoted to associate athletics director for development. Before joining the Southern Methodist staff, Montgomery was associate AD for public affairs at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Michael Veley promoted to associate AD for external affairs/relations at Syracuse. Veley has been assistant AD for marketing, promotions and special events at Syracuse for the past two years ... Phil Caruso selected as head coach at Frostburg State. He was an assistant coach last season ... Mike DeFosse appointed interim head coach at Guilford, succeeding Robert Fulton, who resigned after 13 years as head coach. Pam Dominic hired as head coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Anne Livezey named interim head coach for field hockey and women's lacrosse at Haverford. Livezey has been an assistant coach at the college since January 1996 ... Missy Moran given dual duties as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania). Moran, who replaces Kofie Montgomery as head field hockey coach, coached field hockey and lacrosse at Virginia Wesleyan last year ... Football--LSU's Gerry DiNardo given a five-year contract extension with a perpetual annual rollover provision. DiNardo, who became head coach in December 1994, has a 17-6 record.

Women's gymnastics--Megan Fenton appointed head coach at UC Santa Barbara, replacing Randy Lane, who became an assistant coach at UCLA. Fenton was an assistant to Lane last year.

Women's gymnastics assistant--Tracey Wilkinson hired as an assistant coach at Penn State. She has been coaching for 10 years.

Men's ice hockey--Western Michigan extended the contract of head coach Bill Wilkinson through June 30, 2000.

Men's ice hockey assistants--Brendan Whittet, a four-year standout defenseman for the Brown hockey squad, hired as an assistant coach at his alma mater. He returns to Brown after one year as an assistant at Colby ... Lee Greseth named hockey equipment manager at North Dakota.

Men's lacrosse--Dave Pietramala appointed head coach at Cornell, succeeding Richie Moran, who resigned after 29 years. Pietramala has served as lacrosse defensive coach and recruiting coordinator at Johns Hopkins for the past three years.

Men's lacrosse assistant--John McDonough hired as assistant men's lacrosse coach at Goucher. He was an assistant at Wingate for the past two years.

Women's lacrosse--Danny Martineau appointed head women's lacrosse coach at Eastern Connecticut State ... Anne Livezey named interim head coach for field hockey and women's lacrosse at Haverford. Livezey has been an assistant coach at the college since January 1996 ... Amy Umbach hired as head coach at George Mason. She was head women's lacrosse coach and associate field hockey coach at American last year.

Women's lacrosse assistants--Cheryl Irvine selected as assistant coach for field hockey and women's lacrosse at Haverford ... Elizabeth "Lisa" Dixon hired as assistant coach at Penn State. Dixon, a 1997 graduate of William and Mary, was cocaptain in her senior year of the women's lacrosse team ... Lellie Cherry named assistant coach at Cornell. Men's soccer--Liam Behrens named interim head coach at Guilford, succeeding Michael Thorn, who resigned to take a position with Adidas Soccer. Behrens has been an assistant coach for the Quakers for the past three years ... Bryan Weaver appointed head coach at Blackburn ... Dale Witmer hired as head coach at Albright. Witmer has coached at the junior high-school level and worked with soccer camps ... Keith Clark selected as head men's soccer coach at Bridgewater State (Massachusetts), succeeding Luis Reis, who became head women's soccer coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). Reis had been at Bridgewater State for five seasons ... Allen Vital appointed head coach at Carson-Newman, replacing Stephen Jones, who resigned after seven years. Men's and women's water polo assistant--Brian Roth selected as assistant men's and women's water polo coach at UC Santa Barbara. Roth competed for the men's team at UC Santa Barbara in 1996.

Wrestling--Tim Flynn, assistant wrestling coach at Edinboro, named acting head coach. Flynn succeeds Bruce Baumgartner, head coach for seven years, who was named acting athletics director ... Brian Smith, an assistant at Cornell, hired as head coach at Syracuse ... Brent Newell promoted to full-time head coach at Longwood. Newell took over the program on a part-time basis in November. He also will become the school's strength and conditioning coach.

Bob Burke, athletics director at American International, named interim commissioner of the Northeast-10 Conference. Burke, who previously headed the Division II conference from 1989 to 1995, succeeds Paul Bogan, the conference's first full-time commissioner, who died July 29.

April Venter named media relations assistant for the Mid-Continent Conference. Previously, Venter was a public relations intern with the Chicago White Sox. CORRECTION

A conference was listed incorrectly in a story in the August 18 issue of The NCAA News about women's enhancement program postgraduate scholarship recipients. Susan Elaine Punzo of Central Missouri State University was an all-Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association women's softball team selection at third base and also is a three-time all-MIAA academic choice.

Deaths

Wendell Forbes, who coached baseball, football, golf and ice hockey at Middlebury, died July 31 in Burlington, Vermont. He was 70.

Braven "Bud" Dyer Jr., who created a nationally recognized awards program for Southern California amateur athletes, died August 21 of Lou Gehrig's disease. He was 70. After World War II, Dyer joined with Bill Schroeder and the Helms Athletic Foundation to record and honor the achievements of amateur athletes in Southern California. Dyer recently retired from the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles for health reasons.

William F. Thomas Sr., former coach of the men's lacrosse team at Western Maryland, died August 13. He was 83. Thomas coached the team from 1977 through 1981, leading his squads to two Middle Atlantic Conference titles. Thomas was inducted into both the lacrosse hall of fame and the Western Maryland College Sports Hall of Fame in 1988.

Roy Chipman, who built the foundation for the Pittsburgh basketball program's rise to prominence, died August 10 at his home in Allison Park, Pennsylvania. He was 58. Chipman was named head basketball coach at Pittsburgh in 1980 and led his teams to a 102-76 record in six seasons. He retired from coaching after the 1985-86 season with a 329-156 career record, including stints at Lafayette and Hartwick.

Doug Adams, a linebacker on Ohio State's 1968 national-championship football team, died August 9 when a vehicle struck him as he rode his bicycle. He was 48. After three years on the Buckeye squad, Adams played for the Cincinnati Bengals from 1971 through 1974.

Norvell Lee, head men's basketball coach at St. Augustine's, died in a one-car automobile accident August 13 in Goldsboro, North Carolina. Authorities believe he may have had a heart attack. Lee coached high-school basketball for 35 years before taking the head coaching job at St. Augustine's in 1994.

Marvin Webster Jr., a 19-year-old Temple basketball player, died August 14 after a heart attack while riding in a car in Greensboro, North Carolina. He had returned home to Greensboro after attending summer school at Temple, where he was a sophomore.

Ellery Clark Jr., former track coach at Navy, died August 4 in Boston. He was 87. Clark was a professor of English and naval history and track coach at Navy for many years. He wrote three books on the Boston Red Sox and several biographies.
