Crabtree retires after 22 volleyball seasons

Floretta Crabtree, the only coach in the history of Eastern Connecticut State women's volleyball, has retired after 22 seasons.

Crabtree retires with the second-most coaching victories in the university's athletics history and as the winningest coach in New England collegiate women's volleyball. Crabtree coached 919 matches, winning 616 against 295 losses for a winning percentage of 67.6.

After instituting the women's volleyball program in 1975, Crabtree led the Warriors to postseason tournaments every season beginning in 1977.

Crabtree was named New England Region coach of the year in 1995. She served as chair of the NCAA Division III New England regional advisory committee since its inception.

Crabtree was named to the Eastern Connecticut State faculty in 1971 after coaching and teaching on the high-school level in Michigan and New York. She earned her bachelor's degree from Keene State and her master's degree from Cortland State.

Chet Gladchuk Jr. hired as athletics director at Houston. Gladchuk has been AD at Boston College the past six years ... Dennis O'Connor, chair of the faculty athletics committee and a professor of economics at Loras, appointed interim AD at the college for a minimum of one year. O'Connor has been a member of the faculty since 1983 ... New Mexico State named Jim Paul as AD. Paul has been owner and president of the El Paso Diablos, a Class AA Texas League affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers ... Dave Foster, who has been serving as interim AD at Colorado Christian, appointed full-time AD at the university. Foster also is head women's volleyball coach ... St. Norbert announced the retirement of Larry Van Alstine, effective at the start of the spring semester January 18, 1998. Van Alstine has been AD since 1989 and a member of the athletics department staff since 1972, coaching football, women's basketball, track, cross country and baseball at various times ... Albert "Skip" Applin appointed athletics director and associate vice-president for student life at Texas Wesleyan. Applin has been vice-president for development and dean of academic affairs at the United States Sports Academy ... Bill O'Flaherty, chair of intercollegiate athletics at Clarkson, resigned to become director of player personnel with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League. O'Flaherty has been on the Clarkson faculty since 1972, having served as head men's ice hockey coach and athletics director before becoming athletics chair in 1986 ... Steve Miller, head coach of six sports at Cornell College as well as athletics director from 1982 to 1989, was named to a second stint as AD, succeeding Ellen Whale. Whale, who will remain at the school as professor of physical education and director of intramurals, has been AD the past seven years. Miller will continue with his duties as head football coach at Cornell College.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Derek Morel named associate AD for external relations at St. Bonaventure. Morel has been assistant AD for development at Northwestern State the past three years ... Rice promoted three assistant ADs to associate athletics directors in a reorganization of the athletics department. Promoted to associate ADs were Dean Allcorn, assistant AD for finance; Cristy McKinney, assistant AD for women's sports; and Steve Moniaci, assistant AD for administration ... Robert Burton appointed associate AD for compliance at Texas Tech. Burton most recently served as assistant AD and athletics compliance coordinator at Oklahoma State.

Faith Shearer hired as assistant AD for external operations at Morgan State. Shearer was assistant AD and senior woman administrator at North Carolina Central the past two years ... Scott Swere promoted to assistant director of athletics and recreation at Bard after serving as athletic trainer and wellness director. Swere also will be head men's soccer coach ... Cherise Galasso named to the new position of assistant AD at Regis (Massachusetts). She also will be head women's soccer and basketball coach. Galasso has been assistant basketball and soccer coach at Rochester ... Derrick Gragg selected as assistant AD for compliance at Michigan. Gragg has been director of compliance and operations at Missouri the past three years ... Rice promoted three longtime staff members to assistant athletics directors in a major reorganization of the athletics department. Allen Eggert, head trainer, named assistant AD for medical services; Julie Griswold, academic coordinator, named assistant AD for academic services; and Mike Pede, marketing director, named assistant AD for marketing. Baseball--South Carolina-Spartanburg hired Matt Fincher as head coach. Fincher was interim head coach at Andrew College the past season ... Bill Mueller named head coach at Ozarks (Arkansas), succeeding Jeff Hart, who resigned to enter private business. Mueller has been an assistant coach at Indiana since 1994 ... Greg Appleton selected as head coach at Columbus State, replacing Chip Reese, who resigned after seven seasons. Appleton was head coach at Young Harris College the past five seasons ... Brad Warnimont named head coach at Salem-Teikyo. Warnimont has been head coach at Ashland the past six years.

Baseball assistant--Frank Walton hired as a full-time assistant coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Walton was a volunteer coach the past two seasons and an assistant coach the four seasons before that. He succeeds long-time assistant Jim Case, who accepted a position at Mississippi State.

Men's basketball--Jeff Jones, head coach at Virginia, given a two-year contract extension carrying him through the 1999-00 year. Jones has compiled a 135-85 record in seven years as head coach ... Buffalo extended the contract of head coach Tim Cohane for three years. Cohane has been at Buffalo the past four seasons ... Bob Bjorklund hired as head coach at Bethel (Minnesota), succeeding George Palke. Bjorklund also will be assistant athletics director ... Joe Kremer, interim head coach, selected for the newly created full-time position of head men's basketball coach/facility manager at New Paltz State. Kremer was named interim head coach just before the start of last season ... Curt Kietzer promoted to head coach at Macalester, succeeding Andy Manning, who resigned after three seasons but will continue to work at Macalester in other capacities. Kietzer was associate head coach the past two years ... Chad Wintz appointed head coach at Fort Hays State. He has been head coach at Dodge City Community College ... Men's basketball assistants--Kenny Blakeney named assistant coach at Delaware. Blakeney, a member of the Duke national-championship teams in 1991 and 1992, has been an assistant coach at James Madison and La Salle ... Derek Waugh hired at Stetson. Waugh, who was a practicing attorney the past year in Atlanta, was a four-year member of the basketball team at Furman ... Chris Bartley, assistant coach at Wentworth Institute, resigned after three seasons ... Tracy Dildy resigned as an assistant at Ball State to take a similar position at DePaul ... Orlando Vandross named restricted-earnings coach at Boston U. Vandross was an assistant coach last season at Massasoit Community College ... Schyler Pindar hired as administrative assistant for men's basketball at Georgia State. He was an assistant the past two years at Albright ... Galasso has been an assistant basketball and soccer coach at Rochester ... Jon Herbrechtsmeyer hired at Cornell College, succeeding Jennifer Currier, who compiled a two-year record of 2-42. The past three years, Herbrechtsmeyer has been head coach at Sioux Falls ... Sal Buscaglia, head coach at Buffalo, given a three-year contract extension. The extension will keep Buscaglia, who has compiled a 137-61 record in six years, at Buffalo through 2000-01 ... Betsy Witman selected as head coach at York (Pennsylvania). Stephanie Lawrence hired as an assistant coach at Wake Forest. Lawrence was a student assistant at North Carolina before playing one season of professional basketball in New Zealand ... Sonya Beeler-Willhoite appointed assistant coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg. She was a graduate assistant last season at Ohio ... Coppin State named Jennie Hall and Jack Arum assistant coaches. Hall was an assistant at Vermont the past three years and Arum was an assistant men's coach at Morgan State the past two years ... Stacey Ritter selected as assistant coach at St. Francis (New York). She was a two-year member of the Robert Morris basketball team ... Frozena Jerro named assistant at Cal State Northridge, succeeding Lindsay Strothers, who resigned. La Salle selected Chrissie Donahue, the second leading scorer in the school's women's basketball history, as an assistant coach. She scored 1,818 points in her four-year career that ended with the 1996-97 year ... Cindy Carroll hired as restricted-earnings coach at Delaware, succeeding Lorraine Morrissey, who became a full-time assistant at Pace.

Men's and women's cross country--Todd Lane hired as head cross country coach at Georgia Southern. Lane was head cross country and assistant track and field coach at St. Cloud State last season ... Gordon Hornig given additional duties as head women's cross country coach at Allentown. He already is head women's track and field coach ... Chicago appointed U.S. Olympian Jim Spivey as interim head coach for men's and women's cross country and track and field. Spivey competed for the U.S. Olympic team in 1984, 1992 and 1996. For the past year, he has been assistant cross country coach at North Central ... Sue Addison selected as cross country and track and field coach at Wheaton (Illinois), succeeding Don Church, who retired after 37 seasons.

Field hockey--Erin Smith named head coach at Widener, her alma mater, two years after her graduation. Smith spent the past year coaching field hockey and women's lacrosse club teams at Elmira to develop them to the varsity level. She also will be head women's lacrosse coach at Widener ... Pamela Bustin appointed head coach at Hofstra. Bustin has been an assistant since 1993 at Michigan State ... April Huckaby hired as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Earlham. Huckaby was head coach for the field hockey and women's lacrosse teams at American International last season in their first seasons as varsity sports. She also was assistant athletics director for compliance ... Nazareth selected Kathy Satterley as head coach, succeeding Kim Farmer, who guided the Golden Flyers to an 8-5 record last fall in her only season as coach. Satterley has coached at the high-school level ... Megan Callahan, a recent Maryland graduate, named head field hockey coach at Johns Hopkins. She also will be assistant women's lacrosse coach. Callahan replaces Janine Tucker, who relinquished her field hockey coaching duties to take over the women's lacrosse program full time as the lacrosse team prepares for Division I competition in 1998-99 ... Angel Prinos appointed interim head field hockey coach at Wittenberg while head coach Linda Arena takes a sabbatical for the 1997-98 academic year. Prinos, who also was appointed head women's softball coach, was an assistant field hockey coach at Delaware Valley.

Football assistants--Kevin Verdugo and Keith Jordan hired at Northern Michigan. Verdugo, quarterback coach and recruiting coordinator at Southeast Missouri State, will be offensive coordinator/running backs coach. Jordan, defensive coordinator/strength and conditioning coach at Southwest Baptist, will be defensive coordinator/defensive backfield coach ... Phil Burnett named defensive line coach at California (Pennsylvania). Burnett was an assistant coach at Defiance the past three years ... Jeff Cordell selected as full-time assistant working with linebackers at West Texas A&M. Cordell has been coaching at the high-school level ... Upper Iowa appointed Dan Donisthorpe offensive line coach. He has been tight ends coach at Texas A&M-Commerce ... Curt Sienkiewicz selected as defensive backs coach at Swarthmore ... Greg Olson named at Purdue to succeed Larry Korpitz as quarterbacks coach. Olson has been quarterbacks coach at Idaho the past three years ... Colgate appointed Roger Ward to the defensive staff. Ward returns to coaching after working with the Brine Corporation in sports management ... Scott Underwood selected as inside linebackers coach at North Dakota. Underwood was defensive coordinator at Sioux Falls the past four seasons ... Brian Taylor named tights ends coach at Merchant Marine. Taylor spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Hampden-Sydney, where he was a four-year member of the football team ... Western Kentucky hired Tom Sims as defensive line coach and Shawn Mennenga as outside linebackers coach. Sims begins his coaching career after a seven-year career in the National Football League. Mennenga spent the past three seasons as an assistant coach at Southwest Baptist ... John Garrett named defensive ends coach at Susquehanna. Defensive line coach Glenn Fausey resigned and Dan Alderson moved to coach the defensive interior line after coaching defensive backs last season ... Roger Casciani hired as defensive coordinator/linebacker coach at Maine Maritime. He also will be head lacrosse coach. Tim Dunn named defensive line coach at Maine Maritime and John O'Connor selected to coach running backs and quarterbacks ... Tim Camp appointed defensive line coach at University of the South (Sewanee). He was an assistant the past two years at Western Oregon. Sewanee also named Ken Jones as linebackers coach. He has been an assistant at Samford since 1994 ... Cliff Korzep hired to assist with the defensive line at Indiana State.

Men's golf--Jay Seawell hired for a second time as head coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Seawell led the Trojans for five years before leaving Anderson in 1995.

Women's golf--Joann Cox selected as head coach for the new women's golf program at Nevada. Cox, who has been assistant women's golf coach at New Mexico State since 1987, will resurrect a program discontinued 19 years ago.

Men's and women's golf assistant--John Wiler hired at Kent to assist with the men's and women's golf programs. Wiler will be a full-time assistant for the men's program and will assist with the new women's program when a head coach is named.

Men's ice hockey assistants--Rob Abel selected as the first assistant for the ice hockey program at Brown. Abel was an assistant coach at Dartmouth the past two seasons ... Peter Oshana, assistant coach at Wentworth Institute the past two seasons, resigned ... Frank Genovese hired as graduate assistant coach at American International, succeeding Greg Klym. Genovese played for St. John's (New York) as an undergraduate and professionally for one year in Holland.

Women's ice hockey assistants--Elizabeth "Libby" Witchger and David Horn named assistant coaches at Minnesota. Horn was an assistant coach at Colby last year and Witchger has coached at ice hockey camps since her graduation from Brown in 1996. She was team captain at Brown.

Men's lacrosse--Roger Casciani selected as head coach at Maine Maritime. He also will be defensive coordinator/linebacker coach with the football team.

Women's lacrosse--Erin Smith named head coach at Widener, her alma mater, two years after her graduation. Graap has been head coach at George Mason since 1993.

Women's rowing--Karen Carpenter Klinger named varsity crew coach at Smith, succeeding Kathy Saltis, who resigned ... Kristin Karl hired as head coach for the men's and women's rowing programs at Stetson, replacing Charles Huthmaker, who served as interim coach last spring. Karl had been varsity and novice coach for the women's rowing program at Massachusetts-Lowell since 1993.

Men's soccer--Scott Swere named men's soccer coach at Bard after serving as athletic trainer and wellness director. Swere also will be assistant AD ... Scott Fisher, an assistant coach at Marshall, hired as head coach at Salem-Teikyo ... Chris Pearson promoted to head men's soccer coach at Anderson (South Carolina). He has been an assistant coach the past two seasons ... Paul Kennedy appointed head coach at King's (Pennsylvania), succeeding Rich Compton, who resigned ... John Bluem, head coach at Fresno State the past six seasons, named head coach at Ohio State. Bluem joined Fresno State as the program's first full-time assistant in 1983 and became head coach in 1991.

Galasso has been an assistant basketball and soccer coach at Rochester ... David Yob named head coach at Allentown. Yob was head women's soccer coach at Centenary from 1993 through 1996 ... Chris Houston, a member of two national-championship teams at North Carolina, selected to lead the first intercollegiate women's soccer team at Houston. Huston is head coach of the Challenge Soccer Club in Klein, Texas ... Purdue appointed Robert Klatte to lead its new women's soccer program. He has been head coach at Wright State the past three years ... Colin Lindores, who guided the Cal State Hayward men's and women's soccer programs to conference championships before becoming head men's soccer coach at Stanford, has returned to Cal State Hayward as head women's coach. In six years at Stanford, Lindores compiled a 50-51-18 record. In his previous nine-year stint as head women's coach at Cal State Hayward, he compiled a 113-34-11 record ... Canadian national team coach Neil Turnbull hired as head women's soccer coach at Portland State.

Women's soccer assistants--Rebecca Myers and Dave Langner named assistant coaches at Dayton. Myers is a 1997 graduate of Massachusetts, where he was a four-year member of the soccer team. Langner has eight years experience at the high-school level ... Monty Hawkins hired as assistant coach at Portland State. Hawkins was an assistant coach at the university before being named interim head coach ... Longwood appointed Alana Hill as assistant coach. She was a four-year standout for the Lees-McRae soccer team before graduating in 1996 ... Anthony Clarke named assistant coach at Slippery Rock. He has been assistant coach at Rowan.

Women's softball--Michelle Phalen appointed the first women's softball coach at Pittsburgh. The program will begin its inaugural season next spring. Phalen has been an assistant at South Carolina the past two years ... Karen Lee Matteson named interim head coach at Cal State Hayward after serving as an assistant coach the past two years. She succeeds Paula Congleton, who accepted a similar position at Santa Barbara City College ... Cindy Manley appointed head coach at Texas Lutheran, succeeding Jennifer Hightower, who resigned to pursue full-time graduate study ... Beth Birky hired as head women's softball and volleyball coach at Tusculum. Birky succeeds Toby Brooks, who became head coach at Montreat ... Angel Prinos named head coach at Wittenberg. She replaces Pam Brenning, who served as interim head coach the past year. Prinos has been an assistant softball coach at Delaware Valley since 1995 ... Len Wagner, who guided the St. Norbert softball program to a 29-30 record over the past two seasons, resigned ... Genny Honea selected as head coach at Central Oklahoma. Honea was a graduate assistant at the university the past two seasons ... Dan Santerre named head coach at Nichols, succeeding Charlyn Robert, who assumed the head women's lacrosse coaching duties in preparation for the new women's lacrosse program to begin play in 1999.

Women's softball assistants--Heather Randolph hired as full-time assistant softball coach at Carson-Newman. Randolph has been working on her master's degree and serving as Carson-Newman graduate assistant coach ... Amy Hayes named assistant coach at Virginia Tech. She was an assistant coach at Bradley.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Brian Ippolito resigned as head men's and women's swimming coach at Seton Hall. He was head coach for three seasons ... Maggie Bintz promoted to head coach at Drew, succeeding Patrick Mead, who resigned after three years. Bintz was assistant men's and women's coach the past two seasons ... Mark Bradshaw, seven-time national champion and a member of the Olympic team, hired as diving coach at Arizona State. Bradshaw coached last season at Ohio.

Men's and women's swimming assistants--Christopher Budvitis hired as assistant coach at Salem-Teikyo. He also will be head water polo coach ... Kirsten LaClair named assistant men's and women's coach at Rutgers. LaClair most recently was assistant men's swimming coach at navy.

Men's and women's tennis--Todd Franklin, head tennis coach and assistant men's basketball coach at Missouri-Rolla the past six years, resigned to become head men's basketball coach at Southeastern Illinois Community College ... Brett Simpson selected as head men's and women's coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Simpson was an all-American at Simpson ... San Francisco appointed Scott Howard as head women's tennis coach. Howard coached the men's and women's tennis teams at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) in 1996.

Wrestling--Iowa head coach Dan Gable announced he would relinquish his coaching duties for the 1997-98 year and work in an administrative capacity in the athletics department while assessing his coaching future. Jim Zalesky, an Iowa assistant, was named interim coach. Gable has been head coach for 21 years ... Lyndon Johnson selected as coach for Sacred Heart's new wrestling program, which will begin competition in 1998-99. Johnson also will be an assistant football coach.

Academic coordinator--Gina Parks appointed athletics academic coordinator at Bowling Green.

Compliance coordinator--Ann Volano and Mike Cross appointed assistant compliance coordinators at Michigan. Volano has been an eligibility coordinator since January 1995, and Cross has been an athletics certification assistant since July 1996 ... Bret Shambaugh named compliance coordinator/academic advisor for the athletics department at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis. Shambaugh was head baseball coach the past three seasons.

Compliance director--David Moss named director of compliance at Rice. He has been video coordinator and liaison between football and the academic advising office at Rice the past four years.

Facilities and operations management--Kerri Fagan named athletics operations and facility management coordinator at Indiana State. She replaces Chris Nations, who became director of facilities and operations at Santa Clara.

Marketing and promotions--Rick Love hired as coordinator of marketing and promotions at Youngstown State. He most recently served as assistant AD at Cleveland State ... The Mid-Continent Conference Presidents Council re-elected Kansas City-Missouri Chancellor Eleanor Brantley Schwartz as chair. Missouri-Kansas City AD Lee Hunt appointed chair of the Directors Council and Joseph Doerr, Missouri-Kansas City faculty athletics representative, named chair of the Faculty Athletics Representatives Council.

The Trans America Athletic Conference extended the contract of commissioner Bill Bibb through June 30, 2000. Bibb has been commissioner since 1991. Conference officers for 1997-98 are Norman Wiggins, Campbell, chair of Presidents Council, and Harold McGee, Jacksonville State, vice-chair. The conference also announced the following staff changes: Ted Gumbart named associate commissioner for championships, marketing and communications; Steve Sturek named associate commissioner for compliance and legal affairs; Sherri Booker named senior woman administrator and assistant commissioner for internal operations and compliance; and Tom Snyder named assistant commissioner for media relations and information.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference appointed Thomas Wistrcill as commissioner, succeeding Kurt Patberg, who resigned to pursue a doctorate. Wistrcill was commissioner of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference the past three years.

Clayton Chapman announced his retirement as commissioner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference effective June 30, 1998. He has been commissioner the past nine years and on the conference staff the past 27 years.

Doug Monson selected as media relations director of the New England Collegiate Conference and assistant sports information director at Franklin Pierce, succeeding David Rourke. Monson recently completed an internship at North Florida.

Officers of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association CEO Council for 1997-98 are Ed Elliott, Central Missouri State, president; Janet Murphy, Missouri Western State, vice-president; and John Darling, Pittsburg State, secretary. Institutional representatives elected to two-year terms are Lawrence Christensen, Missouri-Rolla, president; Sallie Beard, Missouri Southern State, vice-president; and Walter Ryle, Truman State, treasurer.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America hired David Schifrin as public relations/promotions intern.

The National Federation of State High School Associations elected Charles Adams, executive director of the North Carolina High School Association, as president for 1997-98. James Desmarais, executive director of the New Hampshire Interscholastic Athletic Association, was elected president-elect.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the election of four new members of its board of directors. New members are Terry Jacobs, Larry Striplin Jr., Russell Warren and James Wilson Jr.

AGREEMENTS

The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association announced an agreement with MetroSports to produce and televise five conference football games live on Thursday nights for the 1997 season. The broadcasts will kick off October 9 with the Missouri Southern State-Central Missouri State game. The productions will be available around the league through individual agreements with television stations or cable systems.

The Sugar, Orange and Fiesta Bowls were named to join the Rose Bowl as part of the Super Alliance that begins after the 1998 regular season. The rotation for the national championship games will be determined later.

CORRECTIONS

Staff promotions for Todd Newcomb, Timothy Parker, Deb Bogert and Sue Hofmann were listed under the incorrect conference in the Record in the July 21 issue of The NCAA News. Their appointments were at the Patriot League.

The incorrect photo was identified as Lawrence E. Fitzgerald in a report of new members of the Division II Management Council in the July 21 issue of The News. The correct photo is published at left.

The incorrect school was listed as the 1997 Division II field hockey champion in championships year in review coverage in the June 30 issue of the News. Bloomsburg won the title.


NOTABLES

USA Basketball named Mo McHone as head coach of the 1997 USA Men's Tournament of the Americas team. McHone is head coach of the Continental Basketball Association's Sioux Falls Skyforce. He will be assisted by Eric Musselman of the CBA Florida Beachdogs and Mark Hughes of the CBA Grand Rapids Hoops.

The Big South Conference selected Tomas Malik, Coastal Carolina tennis player, and Lora Randolph, track and field standout at Liberty, as winners of the conference's 1996-97 George A. Christenberry Award for Academic Excellence.

Eve Atkinson, Lafayette AD since 1990, elected president of the NCAA Division I-AA Athletic Directors Association for the 1997-98 academic year. Atkinson, who was vice-president the past three years, succeeds Chris Ritrievi, AD at Northern Iowa, and is the first female president of a collegiate football association.

Mario Tonelli, Notre Dame fullback who survived the death march at Bataan in World War II, will receive the All-American Football Foundation's Admiral Thomas J. Hamilton Award at the foundation's Banquet of Champions VIII September 18. Tonelli credits his survival to his football training at Notre Dame. Other awards to be presented are the College President Award to Fred Hovde, former Purdue president; the Asa Bushnell Commissioner Award to Wayne Duke, former Big Ten commissioner; and the Faculty Athletic Representative Award to John Fuzak of Michigan State.


DEATHS

Terry Smith, who led Clemson in receiving while a member of the football team from 1990 to 1993, died July 18 in Lithonia, Georgia. Smith was shot by police who found him attacking his estranged wife. In four seasons at Clemson, Smith had 162 receptions for 2,681 yards. He signed with the Indianapolis Colts in April 1994 and was released in September 1996 without playing a game in the NFL.

Terry Hall, who resigned earlier this year as coach of the Wright State women's basketball team, died July 14 after a four-year struggle with cancer. She had coached the Raiders the past seven years.

Jack Swartz, a longtime member of the Wheaton (Illinois) athletics community, died July 11 in Wheaton. Swartz had served the college and its athletics department in numerous capacities since 1948 when he played football for the college. He later served as men's tennis coach and head football coach. Until his death, Swartz served as associate athletics director and professor of physical education. When the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin athletics directors decided to hire a commissioner in 1987, they selected Swartz. He also was president of the NCAA Division III Commissioners Association.

Purdue assistant football coach Larry Korpitz died July 13 in West Lafayette, Indiana, of brain cancer. Korpitz joined the Boilermakers in December 1996 as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach after spending the previous six years in the same capacities as Wyoming.
