I women's basketball group focuses on administration

The NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee dealt with championship administration issues during its June 23-27 meeting in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

The committee revised criteria used to select hosts for preliminary rounds of the Division I Women's Basketball Championship, including a requirement for sufficient lodging to be located within 30 miles of the championship site.

There also must be a full-service restaurant either adjoining or adjacent to the hotel.

The committee also revised the date formula for future championships beginning in 2003. The formula ensures that the championship game will be held the first Sunday in April.

The date changes were necessary due to changes in the calendar and are in alignment with similar date changes made for the Division I Men's Basketball Championship.

In other actions, the committee approved a recommendation for an additional NCAA Youth Education through Sports (YES) clinic to be conducted at the championship site beginning with 1998 Women's Final Four in Kansas City, Missouri.
