Streeter selected at Penn State-Behrend

Brian Streeter, assistant athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Hobart, has been named athletics director at Penn State-Behrend, beginning August 1.

Streeter replaces Herb Lauffer, longtime athletics director at Penn State-Behrend, who died earlier this year.

Streeter joined the Hobart staff in 1984 as assistant AD and basketball coach. For the past five years, he also has overseen Hobart's summer programs.

Before joining Hobart, Streeter was interim athletics director at William Smith. He also has been head men's and women's tennis coach and intramurals director at Blinn College.

After earning a bachelor's degree at Texas A&M, Streeter earned a master's degree at Ithaca. He is a five-time winner of the Schoenfeld Regional Sportsmanship Award given by the College Basketball Officials Association. At Hobart, Streeter developed the "Rebound and Read" program to help youth develop skills in reading through basketball.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Richard Giese appointed president at Monmouth (Illinois). Giese was vice-president for institutional advancement at Mount Union ... Samuel Rankin resigned as president at Chadron State, effective in June 1998. Rankin will remain on the faculty as professor of history ... Paul Yu, provost and senior vice-president for academic affairs at Butler, selected as president at Brockport State ... New Mexico State dismissed J. Michael Orenduff as president and appointed Executive Vice-President William B. Conroy to replace him. Conroy had been serving as interim president since May 19, when the board of regents placed Orenduff on administrative leave.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Ralph Honderd, men's athletics director for the past nine years at Calvin, relinquished those duties to become head coach of the women's golf team and to teach full-time as a professor of physical education. Honderd also has been men's track and field coach for the past 21 years and is giving up those duties as well. Marv Zuidema was appointed to succeed Honderd as men's athletics director. Zuidema has been men's soccer coach at Calvin for 35 years and will continue in that position ... Hofstra announced the retirement of Jim Garvey effective August 1. Garvey has been AD for the past 10 years. Associate AD Harry Royle was named interim AD. Royle, a Hofstra alumnus, has worked in the athletics department for 27 years ... John Galaris, AD at Salem State, will begin a six-month sabbatical June 30. Staff associate Tim Shea will head the Salem State athletics department in Galaris' absence. Galaris also resigned as commissioner of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference ... Anne Little appointed AD at Winston-Salem State.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Judith Henry selected as associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at Texas Tech. Henry, who will oversee Olympic sports and administrative areas of the athletics department, began her career at Texas Tech in 1980, when she was appointed assistant dean of students ... Rick Thompson appointed associate vice-president for athletics development at Marshall. Thompson has been associate athletics director for external affairs at Tennessee-Chattanooga for the past three years.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

St. Andrews Presbyterian selected Scott Peters as assistant athletics director for compliance. Peters, head volleyball coach at the school for the past two years, will continue as coach ... Dena Hiller hired as assistant AD for academics at St. Bonaventure. Hiller spent the past 11/2 years as athletics academic resource coordinator at Massachusetts ... Dia Daniels appointed assistant AD for compliance at Butler.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Judith Henry appointed senior woman administrator at Texas Tech, where she also will be an associate athletics director. Henry has been a member of the Texas Tech athletics staff since 1980.

COACHES

Baseball--Paul Blair, former Baltimore Orioles outfielder, hired as head coach at Coppin State. He replaces Jason Booker, who took a position with Health Services to Children with Families With Disabilities. Blair played 12 seasons for the Orioles and then for the New York Yankees and Cincinnati Reds. He was head coach at Fordham in 1983 ... Greg Wallace, a former standout athlete in both baseball and football at Augustana (Illinois), named head baseball coach for the Vikings. Wallace has been offensive coordinator and assistant baseball coach at Augustana for the past two years. He replaces Barry Bilkey, who ends a 13-year career with a 198-225-1 record ... Santa Clara promoted assistant coach Mike Cummins to head coach, succeeding John Oldham, who retired after 13 seasons. Cummins has been an assistant coach at the school for the past 17 years ... Robb Disbennett selected as head coach at Salisbury State after serving as an assistant coach for the past four years. Disbennett replaces Deane Deshon, who retired after 34 seasons as head coach ... Mark Woodworth appointed head coach at Wentworth Institute, succeeding Dave Worthley, who resigned after five seasons. Woodworth has been an assistant coach and sports information intern at Wesleyan for the past two years.

Men's basketball--Pat Harris appointed head coach at Army. A 1979 West Point graduate and letter winner, Harris was an assistant men's basketball coach from 1990 through 1995 at Army before becoming an assistant women's basketball coach for the past two seasons. He was interim head women's basketball coach last season ... Mike Brown named head coach at Hunter. Brown was an assistant for the past three seasons at West Virginia ... Rich Zvosec, head coach at North Florida since 1991, hired as head coach at Millersville. Zvosec succeeds David Springer, who served as interim head coach during the 1996-97 season ... Rowan selected Joe Cassidy as head coach after one season as interim head coach. Last season, Cassidy guided Rowan to a 26-3 record. He was an assistant coach for the Profs for five years ... Florida State head coach Pat Kennedy hired at DePaul. In 11 seasons at Florida State, Kennedy compiled a 202-131 record ... Jan van Breda Kolff given a new three-year contract at Vanderbilt. Van Breda Kolff posted a 70-53 record in four seasons at his alma mater ... Mark Johnson selected as interim coach at Fort Hays State. He replaces Gary Garner, who was named head coach at Southeast Missouri State. Garner led Fort Hays State to a Division II championship in 1996 ... David DeFerrari hired at John Jay.

Men's basketball assistants--Mike Sharpe hired as an assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City. Sharpe has been an assistant at Johnson County (Kansas) Community College ... Clayton Bates named as an assistant coach at Jacksonville. Bates was an administrative assistant at Illinois last year ... Joe Prunty appointed part-time assistant coach at San Diego, succeeding Royce Youree, who resigned after two years. Prunty was assistant video coordinator for the San Antonio Spurs during the past year ... St. Mary's (California) named Tim Murphy, David Carter and Gary Cook as assistant coaches and Carl Reed as an administrative assistant. Murphy was an assistant coach at Cal State San Bernardino for the past three years, Carter was an assistant at Eastern Washington during the past two seasons and Cook is an assistant high-school superintendent and business manager and former high-school coach. Hall was executive director of the Pittsburgh Women's Basketball Association and assistant athletics director of the Dapper Dan Boys and Girls Clubs during the past year ... Western State appointed Karyn Ridgeway-Pilskalns as head coach. She has been an assistant at Montana State and head coach at Western Montana ... Elaine Gonya hired at Carthage. Gonya has been head coach at Park ... Trina Patterson, head coach at William and Mary, given a three-year contract extension.

Women's basketball assistants--DeAnn Craft named assistant coach at San Diego State. Craft was an assistant coach last season for the Richmond Rage of the American Basketball League ... Dan Rolfes, restricted-earnings coach at Saint Louis last season, promoted to assistant coach. He succeeds Dawn White, who accepted a similar position at Louisville ... Samford named two assistants: Sue Harris, former assistant coach at North Texas, hired as first assistant/recruiting coordinator, and Bryan Burgess, a graduate assistant at Berry, named administrative assistant ... Michelle Branam selected as assistant coach at Catawba ... Chris Mennig and Sophia Neely appointed assistant coaches at Brown. Men's and women's cross country--Toby Evans selected as head men's and women's coach at Northeastern Illinois. Evans spent last year as assistant men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Southwest Missouri State ... Brad Simmons, Georgia Southern's head cross country coach since 1994, resigned.

Field hockey--Carie Bodo, head coach at Hofstra, relinquished her field hockey duties to concentrate on her duties as head women's lacrosse coach. Hofstra decided to make both coaching positions full time, necessitating the hiring of a new field hockey coach. Bodo, a 1985 Hofstra graduate, completed her ninth season as head coach of both programs ... Massachusetts-Lowell announced the resignation of head coach Katrina King.

Field hockey assistant--Jeannette Ruggiero named assistant coach at Princeton.

Football assistants--Anthony "Dino" Folino named defensive coordinator and strength training coach at Alma, succeeding Bret Hyble, who took a fund-raising position at Central Michigan ... Lawrence announced additions to its coaching staff: John Davis, a high-school coach, appointed assistant defensive secondary coach at Lawrence; Joe Leadley, receivers coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh, named wide receivers coach; and Russ Scott, a backfield coach at the school in 1994 and 1995, named offensive backs coach ... Dieter Brock selected as offensive coordinator at Alabama State.

Men's and women's golf--Kelly Lynch Stewart appointed men's and women's golf coach at Gonzaga.

Men's ice hockey assistant--Mitchell Stone named assistant coach at Lawrence, where he also will be head men's soccer coach. Mitchell graduated from Colby-Sawyer this year after lettering in soccer.

Women's ice hockey--Trina Bourget named head coach at Sacred Heart. Bourget has been an assistant coach at Holy Cross.

Men's and women's lacrosse--Jon Lantzy hired at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Lantzy has been assistant lacrosse coach and recruiting coordinator at Canisius for the past five years.

Women's rowing--Michigan State appointed Bebe Bryans as women's crew coach.

Men's soccer--Scott Dean appointed head men's coach at Stony Brook. Dean was an assistant at Rhode Island last season ... Mitchell Stone named head coach at Lawrence, where he also will be assistant ice hockey coach. Stone becomes the first full-time soccer coach at Lawrence, succeeding Doug Paul, who was head coach on a part-time basis last season ... Stephen Anthony hired as head coach at Northeastern Illinois after four years as assistant director of the Student and Career Development Center at DePaul. He was the first four-year letter winner in soccer at DePaul as an undergraduate and later coached the women's club soccer team ... Brendan Considine named men's coach at Kutztown.

Women's soccer--Lance Watkins named head women's coach and director of soccer at St. Andrews Presbyterian. Watkins completed his first season as head men's soccer coach last season and will maintain those duties. He succeeds Ruth Holden ... Jen Fallon selected to lead the Sacred Heart women's team to Division I classifications for the 1999-2000 season. Fallon, Sacred Heart's all-time leading scorer in both soccer and lacrosse, was a graduate assistant for the men's program last year ... Mount St. Mary's appointed Laura Johnston as head coach. Johnston has coached youth soccer while teaching and working with the performing arts in Boise, Idaho, since 1989 ... Kellie Leeman, head coach at John Carroll, selected as head coach at Lawrence, where she will also be an assistant women's basketball coach. Leeman becomes the first full-time women's soccer coach at Lawrence, succeeding Chuck Coan, who had been head coach on a part-time basis since 1988 ... Dianne Scott appointed women's coach at Kutztown.

Women's soccer assistants--Bryan Evans named assistant women's coach at Catawba ... Christopher Newport hired Shawn Martin as assistant coach. Martin has been an assistant men's soccer coach at North Carolina Wesleyan and at the high-school level ... Tracy DiMillio Kerr appointed assistant women's coach at Harvard. Kerr has been an assistant coach at American and has coached youth soccer ... Ron Celestin named assistant coach at Princeton.

Women's softball--Amy Gilmore hired as head coach at Carthage. She has been head softball and assistant women's basketball coach at the high-school level ... Troy Abbey selected as head women's softball and volleyball coach at Colorado College. He has been head coach at Saddleback and at the high-school level.

Men's and women's swimming--Stephen Jungbluth named interim head coach for the Amherst swimming program, succeeding Peter Solomon, who became head coach at Middlebury. Jungbluth has been an assistant coach for the men's and women's program for the past two years ... Butler announced the resignation of Steve Maxwell, men's and women's coach.

Men's and women's swimming assistant--Chip Kline hired as assistant swimming coach at North Carolina State.

Men's and women's tennis--Brady Lindsley appointed head men's and women's coach at Carthage. Lindsley was a four-year men's tennis letter winner at Carthage and remains the school's all-time leader in singles wins ... David Haliburton named head women's tennis coach at Kennesaw State, succeeding Andrea Schmitz, who resigned. Haliburton currently is an assistant professional at Pinetree Country Club in Kennesaw, Georgia ... Barbara Young given additional duties as head men's tennis coach at Lafayette. Young, who already coaches the women's team, replaces Pete Tomaino, who resigned ... Clay Maynor, men's and women's tennis coach at Campbell, resigned.

Men's and women's track and field--Gerry Gravel, men's track and field coach at Westfield State for the past 28 years, resigned. Gravel began the track and field program at Westfield State in 1969. He will continue as a member of the movement science department faculty until May 1998 ... Greg Scholars named head men's and women's track and field coach at Texas Tech. Scholars has been responsible for the men's track and field program during the past two seasons and now assumes direction of the women's team. He replaces Liz Parke, who has coached the women's team since 1993 and now becomes director of events.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Toby Evans, assistant men's and women's coach at Southwest Missouri State last season, named head men's and women's cross country coach at Northeastern Illinois.

Women's volleyball--Troy Abbey named head women's volleyball and softball coach at Colorado College. Abbey has been women's volleyball coach at Saddleback ... Debbie Kirch hired at Wisconsin-Green Bay, succeeding Cindy Brauck, who became head coach at Missouri Western State. Kirch has been assistant women's volleyball coach and head coach of the men's volleyball club team at Northwestern since 1995 ... Michelle Hansen appointed head coach at Western Carolina.

Women's volleyball assistant--Jill Stephens returned to Florida Southern as assistant coach. Stephens was a two-time all-America volleyball player while a student at Florida Southern. For the past two years, she has been an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic ... Aimee Smith, former Michigan volleyball standout, hired as first assistant coach at her alma mater.

STAFF

Athletics development associate--Rick Thompson appointed associate vice-president for athletics development at Marshall. Thompson has been associate athletics director for external affairs at Tennessee-Chattanooga for the past three years.

Events director--Liz Parke named director of events at Texas Tech. Parke has been head women's track and field coach at Texas Tech since 1993.

Media relations assistant--Scott Flanders appointed assistant athletics media relations director at New Hampshire. A member of the New Hampshire staff since 1994, Flanders most recently was interim assistant media relations director.

Sports information director--Sara Stinson named sports information director at Alma. Stinson, an assistant SID at Ferris State, is the school's first full-time SID ... Michael King, SID at Connecticut College for the past two years, appointed sports information director at Curry.

Sports information assistants--Bridget Toomey named assistant sports information director at Illinois, where she was a member of the women's basketball team. Toomey has served as a student assistant and intern in the sports information office at Illinois since 1994 ... Cassie Arner named publications assistant in the sports information office at Illinois. Arner was an assistant SID at Virginia Tech for the past 11/2 years.

CONFERENCES

John Galaris resigned as commissioner of the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference effective June 30. At that time, Galaris will begin a six-month sabbatical leave from his duties as athletics director at Salem State. He has been commissioner for the past seven years. John Harper of Bridgewater State (Massachusetts) will succeed Galaris as commissioner.

Texas A&M President Ray Bowen re-elected chair of the Big Twelve Conference Board of Directors. Tom Stanton, Baylor athletics director, was named chair of the directors of athletics for the Big Twelve and Baylor faculty athletics representative David Guinn was named chair of the conference's FAR group. Jeanne Nowlin of Baylor named chair of the senior woman administrators group.

Donald Morrison, faculty athletics representative at UCLA, named president of the Pacific-10 Conference for 1997-98. Vice-presidents are John Kasser, AD at California, and Marie Tuite, senior woman administrator at Washington.

Carl Paganelli appointed football supervisor of officials for the Mid-American Conference.

The Ohio Valley Conference extended the contract of Commissioner Dan Beebe through June 30, 2000. Also, Rob Washburn was named assistant commissioner for information and championships.


NOTABLES

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) presented Cedric W. Dempsey, NCAA executive director, its Outstanding Individual Achievement Award. It also presented GTE with its Corporate Award for Significant Contributions to Intercollegiate Marketing.

Recipients of National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) awards are Dennis Woods, chair and president of United Security Bank in Fresno, California, University Division volunteer of the year; Jim Lord, State Farm Insurance Companies, Greeley, Colorado, College Division volunteer of the year; Homer Rice, former Georgia Tech athletics director, University Division fund-raiser of the year; Manny Mantrana, St. Thomas (Minnesota) baseball coach, College Division fund-raiser of the year; Steve Smith, player for the Atlanta Hawks basketball team and Michigan State, University Division donor of the year; and J. Tom Nelson III, president of Coca-Cola Bottling, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, College Division donor of the year.

Finalists for the 1997 Rotary Smith Award are Lance Berkman, first baseman at Rice; J. D. Drew, outfielder at Florida State; and Tim Hudson, pitcher/outfielder at Auburn. The award will be presented July 9 by the Rotary Club of Houston.

The College Golf Foundation announced several award winners: Methodist senior Jennifer Cieslak and Greensboro sophomore Kevin Angle named women's and men's golfers of the year for Division III; Texas junior Brad Elder and Arizona sophomore Marisa Bena selected as golfers of the year in Division I; and Cal State San Bernardino senior Scott Householder and Lynn sophomore Zoe Grimbeek selected golfers of the year for Division II.

Also, the College Golf Foundation announced the Rolex College Golfers of the Month for May: Texas senior Heather Bowie and Clemson senior Charles Warren.

Fairleigh Dickinson head soccer coach Seth Roland selected to coach the 1997 United States soccer team at the 15th World Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. Roland has been involved in the Maccabiah since 1977, first as an athlete and then as a coach.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

DePauw and Rose-Hulman accepted as members of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference, beginning with the 1998-99 academic year. Both schools have been members of the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Oakland will join the Mid-Continent Conference beginning in 1998-99 and will begin competing for championships in the 1999-2000 season. Oakland is in the process of moving from Division II to Division I.

Keene State has joined the newly formed New England Women's Lacrosse Alliance in preparation for its first varsity women's lacrosse season. The alliance will have two divisions. The Northern Division will include Keene State, Plymouth State, Colby-Sawyer, New England and Castleton State. The Southern Division will include Bridgewater State (Massachusetts), Endicott, Eastern Connecticut State, Elms and Massachusetts-Dartmouth.

George Mason accepted as an associate member of the Big South Conference for softball.

CORRECTION

A story in the June 2 issue of The NCAA News about the first meeting of the Division I Business/Finance Cabinet incorrectly identified a cabinet member's institution. Irv Cross, a member of the cabinet's administrative committee, is director of athletics at Idaho State University.

DEATHS

John White Jr., former head track coach at Hampton, died June 8. He was 70. White retired from Hampton in 1992 after 18 years as assistant professor of physical education, health and recreation. As track coach at Hampton, he served as meet director of numerous track and field events, including two NCAA championships. He also was a USA track and field official and served as an assistant football coach at Hampton.
