Barnes to head Humboldt State athletics

Scott Barnes was appointed director of athletics at Humboldt State, succeeding Scott Nelson, who has been serving as interim AD for the past two years.

Barnes has been associate director for development and special projects at Iowa State for the past two years. Barnes was responsible for overseeing the most successful fund-raising campaign in the athletics department's history, including a $14 million capital projects program and a $7 million endowed scholarship campaign.

Barnes also supervised the Iowa State athletics marketing program and implemented its corporate sponsorship program.

Barnes previously worked as associate AD for external affairs at Pacific (California) and director of athletics development at UC San Diego. His experience also includes serving as general manager for the World Basketball League's Fresno Flames. He earned a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Fresno State.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Glen Johnson named president at Southeastern Oklahoma State effective July 1. Johnson is director of public policy at Oklahoma ... Al Karnig appointed president at Cal State San Bernardino. Karnig has been provost at Wyoming ... Gonzaga announced the resignation of the Rev. Edward Glynn, president, effective immediately ... Rick Gregory, vice-president for executive and student affairs at Dallas Baptist, hired as president at Howard Payne ... Ervin Rokke selected as president of Moravian and Moravian Theological Seminary effective August 1. Rokke has been president of National Defense (Washington) ... Northern Kentucky appointed James Votruba president effective August 1. Votruba is vice-provost for university outreach at Michigan State ... Joseph Burke selected as president at Keuka effective August 1. Burke has been director of education and professor of political science at Air Force. He succeeds Frank Strong, who has served as interim president since January.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Matt Newman, athletics director at Savannah A&D, resigned effective December 31 to enter the doctoral program at Virginia. Newman also has been head baseball coach ... Bill Fusco hired as AD at Sonoma State. Fusco has been AD at Dominican College in San Rafael for the past six years ... Jim Tinkey promoted to AD at La Roche. Tinkey was assistant AD and head baseball coach.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Nebraska announced the retirement of Don Bryant as associate athletics director for public relations effective in July. Bryant's duties will be assumed by assistant AD Chris Anderson. Anderson will retain her duties as sports information director, a position she has held for the past four years.

COACHES

Baseball--Matt Newman, head coach at Savannah A&D, resigned to enter the doctoral program at Virginia. In five seasons, Newman led the Bees to a 58-85 record, including 20-win campaigns in each of the past two seasons. Newman also has been athletics director ... Rick Creehan relinquished his duties as head baseball coach at Allegheny to become head golf coach. Creehan will retain his duties as athletics director. Assistant baseball coach Mike Ferris was promoted to replace Creehan as head coach. Creehan led the Gators to a 377-170-3 record in 13 seasons ... Doug Jones hired as head coach at Tusculum, succeeding Tom Griffin, who resigned after eight seasons. Jones was an assistant coach at Gardner-Webb for the past four years and an all-academic member of the baseball team before that.

Men's basketball--Tony Sheals resigned as head coach at Bethune-Cookman to become an assistant coach at Towson State. Sheals was 45-65 in four seasons at Bethune-Cookman ... James Cosgrove appointed head coach at Endicott. Cosgrove has been an assistant for the past four years at St. Anselm ... Ron Slaymaker, head coach at Emporia State, announced his retirement effective at the conclusion of next season, which will be his 28th year guiding the Hornets ... Charles "Chuck" Driesell hired as head coach at Marymount (Virginia). Driesell was associate head coach for the past nine years at James Madison ... Lance Randall, assistant coach at Beloit, appointed head coach at Webster. Randall replaces Tom Hart, who will devote full attention to his position as athletics director.

Men's basketball assistants--Todd Rinehart hired at Denver after five seasons at Southwestern Louisiana ... Frank Haith, an assistant coach at Texas A&M, named assistant coach at Wake Forest. Haith previously worked on the Deacon staff as a graduate assistant in 1989-90. He replaces Ricky Stokes, an assistant for the past eight years, who became an assistant at Virginia ... Wylie Tucker hired as an assistant at Stetson. Tucker has been head basketball coach and athletics director at Talladega since 1984. Also, Andy McClouskey has been retained as an assistant at Stetson.

Women's basketball assistants--Jenny Greger, former standout guard at Wisconsin-Milwaukee, hired as an assistant coach at her alma mater. She was named Midwestern Collegiate Conference player of the year last season ... Anna West, assistant coach at Southern Utah, named top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Eastern Washington. West was an assistant at Montana State in 1995-96.

Women's cross country--Leslie Wrixon named head coach at Emerson-Massachusetts College of Art. Wrixon, a clinical psychologist in Boston, takes over a program that is in its first year.

Field hockey--Michelle Frates, head coach at Towson State, selected as head coach at Cornell. Before becoming coach at Towson State, Frates was an assistant coach at Yale from 1991 to 1994.

Field hockey assistant--Leonie Kortenhorst hired as assistant coach at Drew. A native of the Netherlands, Kortenhorst led the Boston U. squad as an undergraduate before graduating this year.

Football assistant--Chad Eisele hired as defensive coordinator at Lake Forest. Eisele also will be head men's tennis coach. He was defensive coordinator at Wayne State (Michigan) for the past three seasons.

Men's golf--Rick Creehan named head golf coach at Allegheny, succeeding Norm Sundstrom, who retired after 27 years. Sundstrom also served in many other capacities during his tenure at Allegheny, including as AD and men's basketball coach. Creehan resigned his duties as head baseball coach but will continue as athletics director ... Drew Pittman, head coach at Georgia Southern since 1994, resigned to devote full time to a career in the Georgia PGA.

Women's lacrosse--Kwame Lloyd named full-time women's lacrosse coach and women's soccer coach at Whittier. Kwame, who had been head women's soccer coach and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Susquehanna since 1994, replaces Linda Giuliani, who served as interim coach.

Women's soccer--Kristin Parnell appointed head coach at Emerson-Massachusetts College of Art. Parnell was an assistant coach at Curry last season ... Kwame Lloyd named full-time women's soccer coach and women's lacrosse coach at Whittier. Kwame, who had been head women's soccer coach and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Susquehanna since 1994, replaces Amy Dawson as women's soccer coach.

Women's soccer assistant--Tanya Zwick hired as an assistant coach at Butler. Zwick was a graduate assistant coach at Georgia Southern.

Women's softball--Rhonda Randolph selected to lead the Kenyon team from club status to varsity status. Randolph was a highly successful player at Toledo and has worked as a fastpitch softball instructor at Grand Slam USA in Westerville, Ohio, for the past six years.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--John Loughran, head men's swimming coach and water polo coach at Queens (New York) for the past five years, appointed aquatics director at Loyola Marymount. Loughran will oversee the men's and women's water polo teams and the women's swimming team ... Michael Jordan appointed head men's and women's swimming coach at Salem State, succeeding Jon Lazar, who resigned. Jordan was an assistant last season.

Men's and women's tennis--Chad Eisele hired as head men's tennis coach and assistant football coach at Lake Forest. He was defensive coordinator at Wayne State (Michigan) for the past three seasons ... Alex Khoury named head men's and women's coach at Mercer, succeeding Alden Dunham, who resigned. Khoury has been an assistant tennis pro at River North for the past year ... Steve Cunninghame, head coach of the Sonoma State tennis teams before the program was dropped in 1992, hired to resurrect the men's tennis team, which will begin competition in 1997-98.

Men's tennis assistant--Tim Borick hired as assistant men's coach at Marywood. Borick, who was a member of the Marywood tennis team in 1993 and 1994, was a volunteer assistant last season.

Women's volleyball--Jody Chadwick, head coach at New York Tech, resigned to become head coach at Byram Hills High School in Armonk, New York. In her only season as head coach, the Lady Bears went 0-11 ... Kirsten Huedepohl named head coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Huedepohl has been an assistant volleyball, softball and basketball coach for the past three years at the school.

Women's volleyball assistant--Lisa Huntley hired as assistant coach at Southern Mississippi. She was an assistant last season at Oral Roberts.

Men's water polo--John Loughran, head coach at Queens (New York) for the past five years, appointed aquatics director at Loyola Marymount. Loughran will oversee men's and women's water polo and women's swimming at Loyola.

STAFF

Compliance coordinator--Michigan State appointed Judy Van Horn as compliance coordinator in its newly established compliance office. Van Horn has been compliance coordinator at Central Michigan since 1994.

Compliance assistant--Chris Reynolds named assistant compliance coordinator in the newly established compliance office at Michigan State. Reynolds was a membership services intern at the NCAA national office.

Development director--Greg Wright hired as director of athletics development at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis. Wright, a men's basketball standout at the school before graduating in 1990, also will be executive director of the Metro Athletic Club.

Marketing director--Elyse Stoner, marketing director at Delaware for the past five years, hired as assistant commissioner for marketing and promotions at America East.

Media relations director--Dan Smith appointed interim media relations director at Long Beach State. Smith, the radio voice of 49er athletics for the past two seasons, has worked in athletics marketing and sales at Long Beach State.

Media relations assistant--Amy Westbrook hired as assistant director of media relations at Long Beach State. Westbrook joined the Long Beach State staff last fall after completing an internship at the NCAA national office.

Operations assistant--Winthrop selected Jason Hugg as operations intern for its coliseum, succeeding Melissa Laskowsky, who became event coordinator for the Myrtle Beach (South Carolina) Convention Center.

Sports information director--Sarah Stinson named sports information director at Alma, succeeding Greg Baadte, who will assume other duties in the athletics department. She will be Alma's first full-time SID ... Matt Bourque, director of sports information at Maine, named assistant commissioner for communications at America East. Bourque has worked in the sports information office at Maine since 1989 and as SID since 1991.

Sports information assistant--Greg Hotchkiss appointed assistant sports information director at Texas Tech. Hotchkiss was a staff assistant in the Florida sports information office.

CONFERENCES

Jeff Reynolds hired as assistant director of media services at the Sun Belt Conference. Reynolds was a graduate intern at Western Kentucky.

America East announced several appointments. Elyse Stoner has been hired as assistant commissioner for marketing and promotions, a new position. Stoner has been marketing director at Delaware for the past five years. Matt Bourque, director of sports information at Maine, was named assistant commissioner for communications. Bourque has worked in the sports information office at Maine since 1989 and as sports information director since 1991. Jason Sabatino, a communications intern with the conference for the past academic year, was selected as America East's first full-time business manager/administrative assistant.

ASSOCIATIONS

Treva Dayton, assistant academic director of the Texas University Interscholastic League, named assistant director of the National Federation of State High School Associations beginning August 1. Dayton will replace Richard Fawcett, who joined the federation's staff in 1978 and is retiring September 1.

CORRECTION

The school where Valerie Cushman was appointed athletics director was listed incorrectly in the Record section of the June 2 issue of The NCAA News. Cushman is athletics director at Randolph-Macon Woman's.


NOTABLES

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association named Greg Patton of Boise State and Sheila McInerney of Arizona State as winners of its 1997 Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year Award for Division I men's and women's programs.

Gail Goestenkors, head women's basketball coach at Duke, selected as head coach of the 1997 USA R. William Jones Cup Team. She replaces June Daugherty of Washington, who recently withdrew from the position. Purdue's Carolyn Peck and Oregon's Jody Runge will serve as assistant coaches. The competition will be August 9-16 in Taipei, Taiwan.

The National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame announced the 1997 divisional class of inductees for the hall of fame. Inductees are Joe Cichy, North Dakota State, defensive back, 1968-1970; Joe Delaney, Northwestern State, running back, 1977-1980; Fred Dryer, San Diego State, defensive end, 1967-1968; Joe Dudek, Plymouth State, running back, 1982-1985; William Grinnell, Tufts, end, 1932-1934; Frank Hawkins, Nevada, running back, 1977-1980; Pierce Holt, Angelo State, defensive tackle, 1984-1987; Gary Johnson, Grambling, defensive tackle, 1971-1974; Ken O'Brien, UC Davis, quarterback, 1980-1982; Bruce Taylor, Boston U., defensive back, 1967-1979; and Lynn Thomsen, Augustana, defensive tackle, 1983-1986. 1997 divisional coaches to be inducted are Jim Butterfield, Ithaca, 1967-1993; and Paul Hoernemann, Heidelberg, 1946-1959 ... The foundation also announced Jack Lengyel, athletics director at Navy, will receive the Outstanding Contribution to Amateur Football Award and Ron Abdow, a longtime college official, will be the football official honoree.


DEATHS

Lynn Archibald, former basketball coach at Utah and Idaho State, died May 28 in Provo, Utah. He was 52. Archibald most recently was assistant coach and director of basketball operations at Brigham Young.

Jay Hebert, who led the LSU golf team to the 1947 NCAA championship, died May 25 in Houston. Hebert was 74. A player and teacher of golf for 48 years, Hebert won the 1960 PGA and played on two Ryder Cup teams and captained another. He graduated from LSU in 1948 with a master's degree in finance.

Ralph Horween, a halfback who played under an assumed named to hide his profession from his mother, died May 26 in Charlottesville, Virginia. At age 100, he was the oldest former NFL player. Horween graduated from Harvard in 1920 and began playing for the Chicago Cardinals in 1921, one year after the NFL was formed. He and his brother, Arnold, used McMahon as an alias to keep their mother from knowing they played. He played his last NFL game in 1923 and returned to Harvard to get his law degree.

Charles Taff, a former president of the Atlantic Coast Conference, died May 23 in Hyattsville, Maryland. He was 81. Taff, a professor emeritus and former chair of the business administration department at Maryland, was chair of the athletics council at Maryland for five years. He also served on the NCAA Insurance Committee. Taff retired in 1988 after teaching for more than 40 years at Maryland.
