GTE Academic All-America at-large teams announced

The GTE Academic All-America fall/winter men's and women's at-large teams feature two soccer players, a cross country runner and a swimmer as team members of the year.

Soccer players Mike Fisher of Virginia and Jennifer Renola of Notre Dame are GTE Academic All-America Team Members of the Year in the university division.

Matt Brill, a cross country runner at North Central, is the men's team member of the year in the college division, and Kristin Goldthorpe, a swimmer at Denison, is the division's women's team member of the year.

Fisher, a biology and premedicine major at Dayton, earned the honor for the second year in a row.

Renola, an English major, led Notre Dame to the 1995 Division I women's soccer title and Brill, an international business and Japanese major, was 1996 Division III men's cross country individual champion.

Goldthorpe, a political science and communications major at Denison, helped her team to a fourth-place finish at this year's Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. Nominees must be a varsity starter or key reserve and must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
