Wisconsin-Oshkosh takes another III women's track title

Wisconsin-Oshkosh continued its bid to become the dominant women's track team in its division this decade by winning its third straight Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 21-24.

Tara Jaeger registered three top-five individual-event finishes and Missy Oleson won the shot-put title to propel Wisconsin-Oshkosh to a championships-record-tying third consecutive title and its fifth victory of the '90s.

The Titans, who scored 59 points, outdistanced runner-up and host Wisconsin-La Crosse (383/4 points) by 201/4 points -- the largest margin of victory since 1990, when the Titans posted a 27-point triumph. The Eagles finished as runner-up for the second time.

North Central placed third (37 points), followed by Luther (333/4) and Nebraska Wesleyan (33). All three finishes were school bests.

The Titans joined Christopher Newport at the top of the team championships list with five titles. Christopher Newport (1987 through 1989) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh also are the only teams to win three consecutive outdoor crowns.

Jaeger led the Titans' attack, registering a second-place finish in the long jump, a fourth-place showing in the 200-meter dash and a fifth-place finish in the triple jump. The three-event performance earned the Titans 17 team points.

Oleson became the second Titans competitor to win the shot-put crown, posting a winning mark of 13.80 meters (45 feet, 31/2 inches). Oleson also earned a third-place finish in the hammer throw. Oleson joins Stephanie Bostwick (1990 through 1992) as the only Wisconsin-Oshkosh athletes to win the shot-put title.

Sherry Eckhardt placed second in the shot put, while Kerrie Main scored points for the Titans in two events, placing second in the triple jump and fifth in the long jump.

Laura Nelson added a fifth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run.

Wisconsin-La Crosse earned its second-place finish behind Patti Franckowiak and its title-winning 1,600-meter relay.

Franckowiak scored in three events, highlighted by a runner-up finish in the discus throw. She also scored in the shot put and hammer throw.

Jenny Porter, Hilde deBoer, Shamaine Martin and Lace VanZeeland (who also placed fifth in the 400-meter dash) combined to give the Eagles their second 1,600 relay title. Wisconsin-La Crosse also won the 1989 event.

"This team had a big heart all year long," said Wisconsin-La Crosse coach Pat Healy. "They wanted to be national champions, but they came as close as they could.

"For a team that had no big guns, I think we did pretty well."

Luther's Turena Johnson was the championships' only two-event winner, claiming the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. The 10,000-meter run was her second consecutive title.

Johnson, who also won the 1996 cross country individual championship and the 1997 indoor 5,000-meter run, joins Vicki Mitchell of Cortland State (1990 and 1991) and North Central's Dan Mayer (1993 and 1994) as the only Division III competitors to win the cross country, indoor and outdoor 5,000-meter, and outdoor 10,000-meter titles in the same school year. Mitchell also won the 1997 indoor 1,500-meter run.

Victoria Petrillo of Brandeis, Christopher Newport's Bridgett Cochran, Monique Hacker of Binghamton and Kiyomi Parish of Pomona-Pitzer joined Johnson as repeat champions.

Cochran and Parish each smashed championships records in winning their respective events. Cochran broke the 100-meter hurdles mark, becoming the first competitor to post a sub-14-second mark in the event (13.93), while Parish broke her own 1996 record in the hammer throw.

Petrillo won the 800-meter run, while Hacker earned her second consecutive triple-jump title.

Jaimee Heffner of Washington and Jefferson won the javelin throw and in the process ended the bid of Concordia-Moorhead's Renee Erickson for a fourth consecutive title.
