Player-turned-coach finds second title in II men's golf just as satisfying as the first

Columbus State's Scott Clark must not have had enough fun winning a golf championship as a player, so he decided to win one as a coach.

The second-year mentor did just that, guiding his Cougars to the team title at the Division II Men's Golf Championships May 20-23 at Grand Canyon.

Led by Jaco Rall's eight-under-par 280, the Cougars posted a four-stroke win over North Florida for their fourth title in nine years and sixth overall.

It was Columbus State's third crown in the 1990s, but first since 1994. Clark was a player on the 1992 championship squad.

"It was very exciting to win as a player," Clark said, "but even sweeter to win as a coach because you have to manage the players all year."

Rall was one of those players. He fired opening rounds of 67 and 68, then posted a third-round 71 to help Columbus State emerge as the tournament leader for the first time. Teammate Wilfredo Morales shot the team's best third-round score -- 69 -- to lead the Cougars to a 284 round.

Then, Jon Drewery topped the field with a final-round 66 to help Columbus State post a tournament-low round of 282 and secure the victory.

Records were shattered in the race for medalist as Scott Householder of Cal State San Bernardino outlasted North Florida's Felipe Aguilar with a final-round 69 to post a two-shot victory.

Both golfers eclipsed the championship's 34-year-old record for best total score. Householder finished 15 under par while Aguilar was at 13 under. Gary Head of Middle Tennessee State held the previous mark of 10 under par, established in 1963, the first year of the event.

The two golfers were tied after the first round, each having shot six-under-par 66. Jeff White of Abilene Christian shot a second-round 67 to lead at the halfway mark, but Householder and Aguilar emerged as coleaders again after the third round to set the stage for the final dramatics.

"The first round my putter was working great," Householder said. "The last three rounds I was hitting a lot of greens, which kept me going."

Rall placed third at eight under par, while White finished fourth two shots back. Ryan Dillon of South Carolina-Aiken was fifth.

Householder's total helped Cal State San Bernardino tie Rollins for third in the team standings, 11 shots behind North Florida. White's Abilene Christian squad finished fifth.
