Soccer coaches announce scholar-athlete all-America squads

Six players from Harvard and eight all-Americans highlight the 1996-97 National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) men's and women's scholar-athlete all-America teams.

In addition to having six players named to the first, second or third teams, Harvard's team grade-point average was tops among all men's teams.

Other institutions with more than one men's player selected were South Carolina (four), Penn State (three), James Madison (three), Evansville (three) and Cornell (two).

On the women's team, seven scholar-athletes also earned NSCAA all-America recognition for their on-field efforts in 1996.

Four student-athletes -- Pedro Delgado of Evansville, Heather Horton of Charleston Southern, Julie Johnson of Wisconsin and Marc Thorne of Cornell -- head the list with perfect grade-point averages.

Student-athletes selected for the teams must have at least a 3.200 grade-point average (4.000 scale) throughout their career and must be a starter.
