Monarchs reign again in III men's golf by crushing field

Methodist continued its decade of dominance in Division III men's golf, running away from the field with a record-setting second round and capturing a fourth consecutive team title in the May 13-16 championships at The Medallion Club in Westerville, Ohio.

It is the Monarchs' seventh title in eight years -- a string that began in 1990 when Methodist unseated six-time defending champion Cal State Stanislaus.

The Monarchs placed four of their five golfers in the field's top 10, including medalist Brion McLaughlin, who fired a final-round 74 to edge teammate Mike Adamson by a stroke. Adamson, whose total included a record-tying second-round 66, was trying to become the first repeat medalist since Mike Bender of Cal State Stanislaus in 1979-80.

Methodist opened a 10-shot lead over host Otterbein after the first round. Chris Eaves and Bryan Wright both shot one-under-par 71s to pace the Monarchs attack. Guilford took over as primary chaser after the second round, but Methodist had opened a 24-stroke gap by that time after posting a team total of 284, besting their previous tournament record of 285.

Along with Adamson's second-round 66, Eaves shot a 71 and McLaughlin and Wright added a 73 and a 74, respectively, virtually securing the team title just halfway through the tournament.

The individual battle lasted longer, with McLaughlin overtaking Adamson in the final round. Adamson, a senior, opened the last day with a one-stroke lead over his freshman teammate, but shot a finishing 76.

McLaughlin became the sixth Methodist medalist in nine years.

Kevin Angle of Greensboro finished third with a final-round 74 and helped the Pride place second in the team standings. Otterbein finished third behind Matt Ehlinger, who tied Bryan Martin of Skidmore and Methodist's Wright for fourth place in the individual standings.

High winds plagued the golfers throughout the tournament and particularly during the third round, when gusts consistently hit 45 miles per hour. The low team round of the day was turned in by Otterbein, which compiled a 318. Methodist, fresh from its record 284, ballooned to 323 but still maintained a 24-stroke margin.

The low individual round on the third day was 76 by John Carroll's Jeff Sawitke and Skidmore's Martin.
