Lynn making most of II debut

Knights add women's golf crown to list of new titles

Lynn's emergence as a Division II sports power continued at the second annual NCAA Divisions II and III Women's Golf Championships as the Knights swept the team and individual titles.

Lynn, in its first year of Division II competition and fresh from a win in the Division II Women's Tennis Championships, posted a 26-stroke victory in the golf championships May 14-17 at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida.

The Knights bolted to a seven-stroke lead over defending champion Methodist after the first day, then posted a second-round 317 to increase its advantage over the Monarchs to 24 shots.

Methodist cut 10 strokes from the deficit after round three, but Lynn's final-round 314 was a tournament best and provided the 26-stroke final margin.

Lynn's biggest weapon was tournament medalist Zoe Grimbeek, who led the field from wire to wire in shooting a 23-over-par 315, including a first-round 76, which was the low round of the championship.

Grimbeek shot par on 13 of the last 14 holes during her final-round 78 to stave off a late charge by defending medalist Shanna Nagy of Florida Southern. Nagy posted four-over-par 77s in both the second and fourth rounds to stay close to Grimbeek, but ended the tournament two strokes back.

Methodist was led by Jennifer Cieslak, who shot 77 in the final two rounds to finish tied for third in the individual race with Shruti Khanna and Jennifer Tollette of Rollins.

Lynn's Kristi Sirianni and Josefin Stalvant were sixth and seventh, respectively. Lynn also placed Gioia Tanto in the top 10.

Lynn qualified for the tournament by besting regional foes Florida Southern and Rollins to earn the East region's berth. Florida Southern and Rollins did qualify five individuals, however, including Nagy, Khanna and Tollette.

Simpson placed third in the team standings, three shots better than Concordia-Morehead. Franklin finished fifth.
