Swofford named ACC commissioner

John D. Swofford, athletics director at North Carolina for the past 17 years, has been appointed commissioner of the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Swofford will succeed Eugene F. Corrigan, who retires August 1 after 10 years at the helm of the ACC. Corrigan, who currently serves as NCAA president, gave Swofford his first job in intercollegiate athletics when he hired him as ticket manager at Virginia 25 years ago.

A 1971 graduate of North Carolina, Swofford joined his alma mater's athletics staff in May 1976 as assistant athletics director and business manager. In January 1979, he dropped business manager from his title and was named assistant executive vice-president of the Educational Foundation. In that role, he was in charge of the athletics department's overall financial structure.

Swofford was promoted to AD in 1980, becoming North Carolina's fifth athletics director. During his tenure, North Carolina teams have won 123 ACC championships and 24 national titles.

Jared Cohon named president at Carnegie Mellon effective July 1. Cohon was dean of the school of forestry and environmental studies at Yale ... H. Hanly Funderburk, president at Eastern Kentucky, will retire June 30, 1998 ... Southern Vermont President William Glasser announced his retirement effective June 30 ... Minnesota-Morris announced the retirement of Chancellor David Johnson effective June 30, 1998 ... Kentucky State President Mary Smith will retire in June 1998.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Widener head football coach Bill Zwaan named athletics director at the school. Zwaan has been head football coach since January ... John Suarez appointed athletics director at Long Island-Brooklyn. Suarez has been AD at Mercer County Community College for the past three years.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Margaret Alaimo promoted to senior associate athletics director at Long Island-Brooklyn after serving as associate AD for the past five years. Andy Walker, coordinator of employers and governmental relations at the school, was named to replace Alaimo as associate AD. Alaimo also is senior woman administrator and compliance coordinator.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Georgia promoted Kit Trensch to assistant athletics director for development. Trensch has been director of fund-raising since 1994.

COACHES

Baseball--Denver coach Jack Rose announced his retirement at the end of the 1996-97 season after 36 years with the Denver program. Rose compiled a 784-698 record ... Coppin State head coach Jason Booker resigned effective June 30 to take a management position with Health Services to Children with Families with Disabilities in Washington, D.C. Booker had a 76-244 career mark in nine years as head coach ... Texas-Pan American promoted associate head coach Reggie Tredaway to head coach. Tredaway was an assistant for 23 years to Al Ogletree, who retired.

Men's basketball--Robert Hamilton hired as head men's basketball coach at North Adams State. Hamilton has been director of the Boston Prep/Amateur Athletic Union programs for the past four years. He also will be sports information director at North Adams State ... Lennie Acuff appointed head coach at Alabama-Huntsville. Acuff, who was an assistant coach at the school from 1988 to 1990, was head coach at Berry for the past two years ... Georgia extended the contract of head coach Tubby Smith for two years, carrying him through the 2002-03 season ... DePaul released Joey Meyer, head coach of the Blue Demons since 1984. Meyer had been at DePaul for 30 years, as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He compiled a 231-158 record, including 3-23 last season ... St. Cloud State named Kevin Schlagel as interim head coach for the 1997-98 season. Schlagel has been an assistant at the school for 18 seasons ... Eldon Miller, head coach at Northern Iowa, signed a new three-year contract.

Men's basketball assistant--Mike Nicholson named full-time assistant coach at Missouri Western State. Nicholson has been restricted-earnings coach at Missouri-Kansas City since 1994.

Women's basketball--Tori Harrison, head coach at Coppin State, resigned effective June 30 after five years as head coach. Harrison, who also was senior woman administrator, compiled a 61-77 record ... Sara White and Martin Clapp named cohead coaches at Louisville. White and Clapp, who plan to be married August 9, have been assistant coaches at the school. White has been on the Louisville staff for four years and Clapp for eight ... Alexis Basil hired as head coach at West Virginia. Basil, a full-time assistant on the West Virginia staff since 1993, succeeds Susan Walvius, who was named head coach at South Carolina. Walvius led the Mountaineers for two seasons.

DeeDee Jarman, an assistant coach for the past two seasons at Methodist, promoted to head coach. Jarman replaces Rita Wiggs, who relinquished her coaching duties to concentrate on responsibilities as athletics director. Wiggs coached the Lady Colts for 11 years and became AD six years ago ... Sue Stuebner resigned as head coach at Albright to pursue a master's degree at Harvard. She has been head coach for three years ... Harry Larrabee, men's basketball career coaching leader at Alaska Anchorage, named head women's coach at the school. Larrabee retired from coaching in 1993 to become senior associate athletics director, a position he will retain. He was named interim head women's basketball coach in December.

Women's basketball assistants--Terrance Brown, assistant coach at Coppin State, resigned after two years at the school ... Sharon Versyp and Russell Sarfaty named assistant coaches at James Madison. Versyp was an assistant at Louisville last season. Sarfaty has been director and president of girls basketball summer camps and coaches clinics for Players Choice Basketball the past eight years ... Brooke Cole, assistant coach at Hofstra last season, resigned to pursue opportunities outside coaching.

Field hockey--Linda Bevelander hired to coach field hockey and women's lacrosse teams at Union (New York) effective July 1. It is Bevelander's first collegiate head coaching position. She has been athletics director and basketball, field hockey and lacrosse coach at Applewild School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Football--Georgia extended the contract of head coach Jim Donnan by one year, making it a six-year contract. Donnan guided Georgia to a 5-6 record in his first season at the school.

Football assistants--Wartburg appointed three assistant coaches: Jack Ginn, an assistant at Emory and Henry since 1990, named offensive coordinator; Randy Schneider, linebackers and special-teams coach at Wartburg last season, moved to defensive line coach and recruiting coordinator; and Joel Holst, linebackers coach for the past two years, given additional duties as defensive coordinator. Roger Britson, defensive coordinator and line coach last season, resigned ... Jacksonville hired Charlie Roman and Matt Malaspina. Roman, defensive line coach at Lafayette for the past two seasons, was named defensive coordinator at the school. Malaspina, a volunteer assistant at Central Florida, was named defensive line coach.

Men's and women's golf--Pat Stephens, head golf professional at Gibson Bay Golf Course in Richmond, Kentucky, named head men's coach at Eastern Kentucky. He also will be head golf professional at Arlington Golf Course ... Murray Minto appointed men's golf coach at Kentucky Wesleyan, replacing Tom Campbell, who was named to initiate the women's golf program at the school. Campbell has coached the men's team for the past four years.

Women's lacrosse--Linda Bevelander hired to coach women's lacrosse and field hockey teams at Union (New York) effective July 1. It is Bevelander's first collegiate head coaching position. She has been athletics director and basketball, field hockey and lacrosse coach at Applewild School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

Women's lacrosse assistant--Ricky Fried, a part-time assistant coach at Johns Hopkins for the past four years, promoted to full-time assistant coach beginning July 1.

Men's soccer--Loyala Marymount did not renew the contract of head coach Peter Novakovic for the 1997 season. Novakovic had a 27-112-8 record in eight seasons at the school ... Robert Acunto, head coach at Bard for the past two years, hired as Vanderbilt's first full-time assistant men's soccer coach.

Women's soccer--Jodi Kenyon, assistant women's soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at Harvard for the past three years, hired as head coach at Vermont ... Larry Kirk appointed head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan ... Ken Hadley, assistant men's soccer coach for the past four years at Bethel (Minnesota), named head women's soccer coach at the school. Hadley also is associate dean of students at Bethel.

Women's soccer assistant--UTEP appointed Kevin Cross as assistant women's coach. Cross has coached Texas A&M's club soccer team for the past year.

Women's volleyball--Jamie Ford named head coach at Kentucky Wesleyan, her alma mater.

STAFF

Athletics advancement officer--Mack Rhoades named athletics advancement officer at Marquette, where he will oversee the external operations of the Blue & Gold Fund, the university's athletics scholarship fund. Rhoades was a marketing assistant in the athletics department at Yale.

Communications assistant--Jodi Hoatson, publications coordinator and assistant sports information director at Tulane, named assistant director of athletics communications at Connecticut. Hoatson joined the Tulane staff in September 1995.

Sports information director--Robert Hamilton hired as sports information director and head men's basketball coach at North Adams State. Hamilton has been director of the Boston Prep/Amateur Athletic Union program for the past four years.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Jacksonville was selected as the 12th member of the Trans America Athletic Conference, beginning with the 1998-99 academic year. Jacksonville's men's and women's soccer teams were added to the conference last October for the 1997 season. The school's basketball and baseball teams now will be added.

CORRECTION

A listing of Division II regional qualifying sites that appeared in a story about a meeting of the NCAA Wrestling Committee in the April 21 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly reported the site of next season's North Central Conference regional qualifier. The qualifying tournament will be at St. Cloud State University.

AGREEMENTS

The CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl reached an agreement with ABC-TV, the Big Ten Conference and the Southeastern Conference to maintain their partnership through New Year's Day 2002. The agreements with the two conferences are five-year extensions worth $39 million. The 1998 game will feature the first in a series of increases in payouts, beginning with a distribution of $6.7 million and increasing in increments to a 2002 payout of $8.7 million. The bowl has been affiliated with the Big Ten and the SEC since 1993.

The American Football Coaches Association has signed a five-year contract with the Hula Bowl All-Star Football Classic. Under the agreement, the AFCA will select the four-man coaching staffs for the Hula Bowl's North and South teams. The 1997 Hula Bowl operated under a similar setup. The 1998 game will be played January 18 at Maui's War Memorial Stadium in Hawaii.


NOTABLES

Anne Donovan, head women's basketball coach at East Carolina, and Regina Miller, head coach at Western Illinois, named by USA Basketball as assistant coaches for the 1997 USA Basketball Women's World Championship Qualifying Team that will be led by Nell Fortner. The 12-member USA squad will be selected after May 2-5 trials at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

USA Basketball also named Houston Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich as head coach of the 1998 USA Basketball World Champion Men's Team.

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) named NCAA Executive Director Cedric W. Dempsey as recipient of the NACMA Outstanding Achievement Award.

Brevin Knight, a senior guard at Stanford, named winner of the 29th Frances Pomeroy Naismith Award honoring the nation's outstanding senior male collegiate basketball player under 6 feet tall. Knight, who is 5-foot-10, finished his collegiate career as the third leading scorer in Stanford history with 1,714 points. He is only the second player in Pacific-10 Conference history to score more than 1,500 points and record more than 700 assists in a career.

Ivan Contreras of Penn State named 1997 player of the year in men's volleyball by Kaepa and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Contreras led Penn State to the national semifinals each of the past four years and was a freshman member of the Nittany Lions' 1994 championship team.


DEATHS

Jim McDonald, former Tennessee football coach, died May 1 at a Knoxville, Tennessee, nursing home. He was 81. McDonald joined Bowden Wyatt's first staff at Tennessee in 1955 and coached linebackers through the 1962 season. He was head coach during the 1963 season. He became an assistant athletics director in 1964 and remained in that position until he retired in 1982. McDonald played professionally for the Detroit Lions for two years after and was an all-American at Ohio State, where he was a multisport standout.

Mary Lou Holland, a crew chief in the NCAA drug-testing program for the past five years, died April 2 in Rathdrum, Idaho. Holland, a registered nurse, was on the faculty of Highline Community College and the adjunct faculty at Washington and Seattle Pacific. She was a fellow of the American College Health Association.
