Grove City coach retires after 40 years

Jim Longnecker, head coach of the Grove City men's swimming and diving team for the past 40 years, announced his retirement effective at the end of the 1996-97 academic year.

Longnecker also headed the men's track and field team during those 40 years and served a 12-year stint as cross country coach.

He organized and managed the first NCAA College Division Swimming and Diving Championships in 1964. Two years earlier, he introduced the idea of a national meet for smaller colleges in an appearance before an NCAA committee.

While earning a master's degree at Miami (Ohio), Longnecker served briefly as an assistant swimming coach. After joining the Grove City staff in 1957, he compiled a 366-93 record.

His record in track was 222-53-1, and from 1960 to 1971, Longnecker compiled a 97-31 record in cross country. Through his coaching career, Longnecker recorded only two losing seasons, one in cross country and one in track.

Laurence Mazzeno, interim president at Ursuline, named president at Alvernia ... James Votruba appointed president at Northern Kentucky. Votruba was vice-provost for university outreach at Michigan State ... Margaret Ryan Williams named president at Ithaca. She was president at Lyndon State.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Gregg Waters, head baseball coach at Randolph-Macon since 1982, given additional duties as athletics director and chair of the department of physical education. Waters replaces Helmut Werner, who returns to full-time duties as head men's soccer coach. Waters will relinquish his duties as assistant football coach ... Bob McBee named AD at Midwestern State, succeeding Steve Holland, who became the school's director of personnel after serving as AD for 13 years. McBee has been AD at Eastern Illinois and Robert Morris ... Southwest State appointed Lloyd "Butch" Raymond as AD, replacing interim AD James Babcock. Raymond has been head men's basketball coach since 1984 at St. Cloud State, where he compiled a 231-141 record ... Chuck Burch named athletics director and vice-president of athletics at Gardner-Webb. Burch has been AD at Liberty.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

David Hubbard named assistant athletics director for marketing at UTEP. Hubbard has been coordinator of marketing and promotions for the past three years at Marquette ... Mike Goforth and Buddy Pearson named assistant ADs at Tusculum. Goforth, who has been director of sports medicine, became assistant AD for internal affairs. Pearson has been director of sports information and promotions and now is assistant AD for external affairs ... Barry Milligan hired as assistant AD for marketing and public affairs at Jacksonville. Milligan has been program supervisor at Continental Cablevision for the past 11 years ... Tracey Flynn hired as assistant AD for compliance at Maine. Flynn was assistant AD and senior woman administrator at Fairfield for the past nine years ... Debbie Volpe Hogan appointed assistant AD for compliance at Harvard, succeeding Marcella Zalot, who became associate AD at Colby. Volpe Hogan has been an administrative assistant in the Harvard athletics department since 1995.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Tracey Flynn named at Maine after serving in the same position at Fairfield for the past nine years. She will be assistant athletics director for compliance at Maine.

COACHES

Men's basketball--St. Cloud State head coach Lloyd "Butch" Raymond resigned to become athletics director at Southwest State. Raymond compiled a 231-141 record after becoming head coach in 1984 ... Dan Dakich, an assistant coach at Indiana, named head coach at Bowling Green. Dakich has been an assistant at Indiana since 1987 and the top assistant since 1990 ... Pete Peterson hired as head coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville after serving as an assistant at Incarnate Word for the past 11 years ... Jeff Reynolds named head coach at Wingate. Reynolds was an assistant for the past two seasons at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Men's basketball assistants--Ralph Schuetzle, Southern Colorado assistant coach, resigned to become head coach at Kishwaukee College in Illinois. Schuetzle had been an assistant for the past eight years ... Kevin Broadus hired at American. Broadus was an assistant at District of Columbia for the past three seasons ... Kevin Johnson named assistant coach at Centenary.

Women's basketball--Roxanne Allen hired as head coach at Akron, succeeding interim head coach Angel Donley. Allen was head women's basketball and tennis coach at Wooster for the past three years ...Texas Woman's University appointed Beth Palmer as head coach. Palmer compiled a 72-119 record in seven years as head coach at Texas A&M-Commerce ... Virginia State did not renew the contract of Bertha Cummings, head women's basketball and softball coach. Cummings had a 156-83 record in eight seasons as head basketball coach ... Angie Morton appointed head coach at Pfeiffer. Morton was interim head coach during the 1996-97 season ... Angela Beck, head coach at Nebraska for the past 11 years, named head coach and assistant general manager of the American Basketball League's San Jose Lasers. Beck compiled a 191-128 record at Nebraska ... Tulane extended the contract of head coach Lisa Stockton through 2002. Stockton has coached her teams to three straight NCAA tournament appearances and the 1997 Conference USA championship and compiled a 67-25 record in her three years at the school ... Jocelyn Pfeifer named interim head coach at Eastern Washington after the resignation of Heidi VanDerveer to become assistant coach with Sacramento of the WNBA ... St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) signed head coach Stephanie Gaitley to a four-year contract.

Women's basketball assistant--Cori Rowe, who returned to her alma mater last season as restricted-earnings coach, elevated to full-time assistant coach at North Carolina-Wilmington.

Men's cross country--Jim Timp hired to coach the men's cross country team at Bethel (Minnesota), replacing Stacy Ingraham, who will continue to coach the women's cross country team. Timp also will serve as assistant men's track coach.

Football assistants--Mickey Joseph named graduate assistant coach at Wayne State (Nebraska). Joseph, a former quarterback at Nebraska, will coach running backs ... Jim LaRue appointed assistant coach at Coast Guard.

Men's lacrosse--Assistant coach Mike Mahoney promoted to head coach at St. Lawrence, effective at the end of the season.

Men's soccer--Jim Launder, who guided Wisconsin to the 1995 Division I championship, named head coach at Dayton effective June 1. Launder guided the Badgers to a 194-81-35 record in 15 seasons at Wisconsin ... Mark Leigh appointed head men's soccer coach at Bethel (Minnesota).

Women's soccer--Emily Rice-Randall hired at Christopher Newport to oversee formation of the school's first women's soccer team, which will begin play this fall. Rice-Randall played on three national-championship teams at North Carolina and was a coach for the Olympic development program in Virginia ... Dave Laliberty resigned as head coach at Sacred Heart. He also was head women's ice hockey coach ... Greg Boggs named head coach at LSU.

Women's soccer assistants--Derek Niepomnik selected as a full-time assistant coach at Northern Illinois. Niepomnik has been a part-time assistant since last year ... Ron Raab and Missy Price hired as assistant coaches at Virginia. Raab, who will be the top assistant, replaces Jillian Ellis, who was named head women's soccer coach at Illinois. Price will graduate this spring from Maryland, where she was a four-year member of the Terrapin soccer team.

Women's softball--Virginia State did not renew the contract of Bertha Cummings, head women's softball and basketball coach. Cummings had a 14-13 record during the 1996 softball season ... Becky Underhill named head coach at Anderson (South Carolina), succeeding Renee Williams, who resigned. Underhill, who was a member of the Anderson softball team as an undergraduate, will continue to coach the volleyball team.

Women's swimming and diving--Stephanie Wriede, a 1992 Harvard graduate and two-time all-American, named head women's swimming and diving coach at her alma mater. Wriede, an assistant coach at Harvard since 1995, replaces Maura Costin Scalise, who retired after 13 seasons ... Maureen Travers appointed full-time men's and women's swimming coach at Whittier, replacing Dennis Cujak, who was part-time swimming coach for the past four years. Travers, who also will be head women's water polo coach, has been head swimming coach and aquatics director at Simmons since 1995.

Women's tennis--Roxanne Allen, head coach at Wooster, resigned to become head women's basketball coach at Akron. Allen also was head basketball coach at Wooster for the past three years.

Men's and women's track and field--Jon Cutright appointed men's and women's track and field coach at Juniata.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Sandi Everett hired as an assistant track coach at St. Norbert for the outdoor season. Everett is a former all-American heptathlete at North Carolina ... Jim Timp appointed assistant men's track coach at Bethel (Minnesota). Timp also will be head men's cross country coach.

Women's volleyball--Pfeiffer promoted Shelia Lowery to head coach. Lowery was assistant coach during the 1996 season ... Alan Segal, an assistant coach at Florida Southern for the past three years, hired as head coach at Michigan Tech.

Women's volleyball assistants--Keylor Chan and Christy Peters named assistant coaches at Northwestern. Chan was an assistant last season at Kent. Peters played collegiately for four seasons at Notre Dame.

Men's and women's water polo--Maureen Travers hired as full-time head women's water polo coach at Whittier, succeeding Paul Gothold, who was part-time coach for the past four years. Travers, who also will be head swimming coach, has been head swimming coach at Simmons since 1995. Whittier also named Mitch Carty to replace Gothold as part-time men's water polo coach. Carty, who will continue with his duties as head golf coach, has been an assistant water polo coach at Whittier.

STAFF

Fund-raising director--Kathy Nickel appointed director of the Miner Foundation at UTEP, which raises funds for UTEP athletics.

Marketing and promotions director--Leslie Keast named director of marketing and promotions at Washington. Keast became interim director in December after serving for five years as assistant director of Olympic sports at Washington.

Marketing coordinator--David Hubbard, marketing and promotions coordinator at Marquette for the past three years, named assistant athletics director for marketing at UTEP.

Public address announcer--Don Jackman retired after 25 years of announcing basketball games at Pfeiffer. Jackman joined the Pfeiffer staff in 1966 as a chemistry professor and debate coach. He became the PA announcer after the debate team was discontinued in 1972.

Ticket manager--David Welsh named at Rice to succeed Mitch Moser, who became ticket manager at Duke. Welsh was assistant ticket manager for five years.

CONFERENCES

Kurt Patberg resigned as commissioner of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference effective June 30 to pursue a doctorate at Minnesota. Patberg, whose wife is women's soccer coach at Minnesota, became RMAC commissioner July 1, 1991.

ASSOCIATIONS

Steve Baker named president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). Baker had been vice-president in marketing development for Major League Baseball in Europe for the past six years.

CONFERENCES

The Southern Conference signed a five-year lease to keep its offices in Asheville, North Carolina, after looking at possibilities for relocating when the conference's lease expires July 1, 1997. The new lease will keep the conference in its present location through June 2002.

NOTABLES

Kent McCausland of Iowa and Chrissy Roberts of Eastern Kentucky named recipients of the Edward Steitz Award, which is presented to the nation's top Division I male and female basketball three-point shooters. The award is presented by the Hall of Fame's Tip-Off Classic Committee. McCausland connected on 70 of 134 of his three-pointers this season for 52.2 percent. Roberts hit 84 of 172 for 48.8 percent.

Vanderbilt head women's basketball coach Jim Foster named head coach of the 1997 USA Women's World University Games team. Selected as assistants were Ed Baldwin of North Carolina-Charlotte and Deb Patterson of Kansas State. USA Women's Team trials to select the 12-member World University Games and Jones Cup squads will be August 1-4 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.


DEATHS

Carl Stewart, former head men's basketball coach at Southern-Baton Rouge, died April 18 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He was 70. Stewart coached the school's men's basketball team to three Southwestern Athletic Conference titles and its first NCAA postseason tournament appearance before retiring in 1982.

Michael Priest, a 20-year-old football player at Wyoming, died April 20 after passing out on the practice field. He was flown by air ambulance to a hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, where he died of head injuries.

Middle Tennessee State golfer Johnny Warren died April 23 of cancer. He was 21. Warren, a redshirt freshman, earned his place on the team by winning the school's annual walk-on tournament.

Former Tulsa basketball coach Clarence Iba died April 21 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 88. Iba, who took the Golden Hurricane to the 1955 NCAA tournament, won 137 games in 11 seasons at Tulsa. He was the father of Gene Iba, Pittsburg State basketball coach, and brother of the late Henry Iba, the longtime Oklahoma State coach. Iba moved in 1960 to Fort Worth, where he was a marketing executive until his retirement.

Three Defiance basketball players -- Shaun Roth, Christopher Grammel and Sean Granger -- were killed in a two-car accident April 22 in Defiance, Ohio. Another team member, Brent Maillard, was in serious condition at a Toledo hospital.

Bill McArthur, former football coach and athletics director at Western Oregon State, died April 24 in Salem, Oregon. He was 78. McArthur directed the school's football program from 1947 through 1982, when he retired as athletics director. He came out of retirement to coach the 1991 team. McArthur also occasionally coached the Western Oregon State golf team.
