Seton Hall names Regan athletics director

Sue Regan, a coach and administrator at Seton Hall for nearly 25 years, has been named director of athletics and recreational services at the school.

Regan will serve as AD until the summer of 1998. A national search for a director of athletics will be initiated sometime in the next academic year.

Regan is recognized as a driving force behind women's athletics at the school. She was the first coach of the women's basketball team, beginning in 1973, and led the Pirates to a 191-121 record in 12 years.

Currently senior woman administrator and associate athletics director at the school, Regan is a member of the Big East Conference's executive committee and chairs the league's women's soccer and senior women's administrator committees.

She is the NCAA representative to USA Basketball's Olympic Staff Selection Committee.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

James "Dolph" Norton appointed interim president at Adelphi. Norton previously served as interim president of the University of Maryland System and was a professor of government at Virginia.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Peter Luguri, athletics director at Plattsburgh State for the past 10 years, will leave his duties as AD for an extended time to devote his attention to responsibilities as associate provost for student affairs. As associate provost, Luguri will continue his current administrative responsibilities, including supervision of the field house, fitness center and recreation and supervision of an interim AD when that person is selected ... Bob Corran appointed AD at Minnesota-Duluth, replacing interim AD Greg Fox, vice-chancellor for finance and operations. Corran has been AD at Calgary for 12 years ... John Suarez named AD at Long Island-Brooklyn.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Mario Moccia selected as associate athletics director for external operations and development at Southwest Texas State, succeeding Ted McKinnon, who vacated his position within the athletics department to work on the university's capital campaign. Moccia has been director of sales and assistant director of the Lobo Club at New Mexico ... Margaret Alaimo appointed senior associate AD at Long Island-Brooklyn and Andy Walker named associate AD at the school.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Longtime women's basketball coach Betty Wiseman named assistant athletics director/senior woman administrator at Belmont ... John Goodroe hired as assistant AD for external funding at South Alabama. Goodroe, who has been director of resource management at the Mobile (Alabama) Chamber of Commerce, will oversee the athletics development office and the Jaguar Athletic Club ... Terry Prouty named assistant AD at Keene State.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Longtime women's basketball coach Betty Wiseman named senior woman administrator at Belmont. She also will be assistant athletics director.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Scott Perry hired as head coach at Eastern Kentucky. Perry has been an assistant coach at Michigan for the past four years ... Dino Gaudio named head coach at Loyola (Maryland). Gaudio has been head coach at Army for four years ... Samford promoted assistant coach Jimmy Tillette to head coach, succeeding John Brady, who became head coach at LSU. Tillette has been an assistant coach at Samford since 1991 ... Al Skinner, who coached Rhode Island to 20-win seasons the last two years, hired as head coach at Boston College. Skinner joined the Rhode Island program in 1988 and compiled a 138-126 record ... Kyle Macy selected as head coach at Morehead State. Macy was an all-American player at Kentucky before playing in the NBA for seven years. Since 1993, he has served as color analyst for Kentucky radio network broadcasts of Wildcat basketball games ... Will Rey, head coach at St. Mary's (Minnesota) for the past three seasons, selected as the top assistant coach at Wright State. Rey also has been head coach at Loyola (Illinois) ... Henry Clark named head coach at Cal State Bakersfield.

Men's basketball assistants--Robert Kummer, restricted-earnings coach at North Carolina-Charlotte, named assistant coach at the school, succeeding Joseph Pierre ... Wayne Breeden hired at Morehead State. Breeden most recently was a high-school coach ... James Madison appointed Chris Theobald, Herb Krusen and Richard Morgan as assistant coaches ... Tod Kowalczyk and Rob Lanier hired at Rutgers ... Illinois State announced the resignation of assistant coach Jeff Wulbrun.

Women's basketball--Former Virginia Tech assistant coach Bonnie Hendrickson hired as head coach at the school. Hendrickson was an assistant coach at Virginia Tech from 1988 until 1995, when she became an assistant coach at Iowa ... Linda Sharp, head coach at Southwest Texas State for the past seven years, resigned to become the first coach of the Los Angeles Sparks of the WNBA. Sharp also was head coach at Southern California from 1977 to 1989, taking her teams to NCAA women's championships in 1983 and 1984 ... Brian Shultes promoted to head coach at Eckerd. Shultes was an assistant there last season ... Wake Forest announced the resignation of head coach Karen Freeman to become assistant coach of the Charlotte Sting of the WBNA. Freeman spent five seasons in charge of the Wake Forest program, compiling a 58-79 record.

Larry Just hired at Quincy after serving as assistant coach at Bellarmine for the past eight years under his brother Charlie Just ... Richard Barron named head coach at Sewanee (University of the South). Barron was interim head coach last season after serving as an assistant men's basketball coach at the school for four years ... Laura Litter, head coach at Sullivan, appointed head coach at Morehead State. Litter established the Sullivan program in 1989 and had an eight-year record of 233-30 ... Agnus Berenato, head coach at Georgia Tech, given a new five-year contract ... Bernie Flax named head coach at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Southern California announced the resignation of head coach Fred Williams ... Angelo State appointed Kathleen Brasfield interim coach following the reassignment of head coach Peggy Davis ... Louisville head coach Bud Childers hired at James Madison. Childers has been head coach at Louisville since 1989, compiling a 152-88 record at the school.

Women's basketball assistants--Melanee Wagener promoted to associate head coach at American. Wagener has been an assistant at the school for the past four seasons ... Helen Williams hired at Navy. She was an assistant at Western Michigan for four years ... Robyn Stewart, assistant coach at Idaho State, resigned.

Women's cross country--Seth Sheridan named full-time women's cross country coach and track coach at Belmont effective June 1. Sheridan, who is admissions counselor for the university, previously was part-time associate head coach of women's cross country.

Football--Greg Polnasek named head coach at Colorado College, succeeding Craig Rundle, who became head coach at Albion. Polnasek, who was defensive coordinator and co-coordinator for special teams at Colorado College in 1996, has served as interim coach in charge of recruiting and football operations since January. He will relinquish his duties as head men's tennis coach at the conclusion of the spring season ... Larry Welsh hired as head coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, succeeding Andre Patterson, who departed after three seasons to become a defensive assistant for the New England Patriots. Welsh has been head coach at Atascadero (California) High School since 1979.

Football assistants--Jeff Stoutland hired to coach tight ends and the offensive line and to serve as recruiting coordinator at Syracuse. Kevin Rogers moved to offensive coordinator and Steve Addazio was appointed offensive line coach. The reshuffling resulted from the resignation of longtime assistant George DeLeone, who took a job with the San Diego Chargers ... Matt Limegrover named offensive line coach at Ferris State. He was a graduate assistant coach at Northwestern for the past three years ... Hampden-Sydney promoted Andy Friedlander to defensive coordinator after coaching defensive backs last season. Also, Pete Lembo was hired as offensive line coach at the school. Lembo was tight ends/tackles coach at Dartmouth for the past three seasons ... Jerry Lasko, defensive line and special teams coach at Kent for the past three years, appointed assistant coach at Missouri-Rolla ... Eric Roark named defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator at Tennessee Tech. Roark has been wide receivers coach at Middle Tennessee State since 1989 ... Dale Haupt hired at Coast Guard ... Edinboro announced these staff appointments: Nick Cronk named defensive coordinator; Mario Houston, wide receivers coach; Dusty Calhoun, defensive secondary coach; and Mike McCoy, full-time assistant coach ... Pennsylvania named its staff: Abbott Burrell as secondary coach, John Reagan as tight ends coach, Jonathan Michaels as wide receivers coach and Jerome James Jr. as director of football operations.

Men's and women's golf--Belmont appointed Vicki Carpenter as head coach of its new women's golf program. Joey Davis was hired as head men's coach at Belmont.

Men's ice hockey--Ron Anderson, head coach at Merrimack, given a two-year contract extension.

Women's skiing--Northern Michigan announced the resignation of John Peppler as women's Alpine coach.

Men's and women's soccer--Earle Davidson hired as head men's coach at Belmont ... Milton Braga given additional duties as head coach of the one-year-old women's soccer program at Northern Michigan, replacing John Peppler, who resigned. Braga, who also is women's diving coach, was a volunteer coach for the soccer team during the 1996 season ... Alf Bilbao named head men's and women's soccer coach at Central (Iowa). Bilbao is a member of the Des Moines (Iowa) Menace pro-am soccer team and has served as the squad's captain ... Kris Bassler appointed head women's coach at UC Santa Barbara for the 1997 season.

Men's and women's soccer assistants--Kevin Arthur hired as part-time assistant men's coach at St. Mary's (California) ... Anne Moore appointed at East Tennessee State.

Men's tennis--Colorado College head men's tennis coach Greg Polnasek will relinquish his tennis coaching duties at the conclusion of the spring season to concentrate on his new duties as head football coach ... Former Loras tennis standout and current assistant coach Rick Mougin appointed head men's tennis coach at Loras. He is in his second season as an assistant for both the men's and women's tennis teams. Mougin succeeds Eric Johnson, who resigned effective at the end of the season to become men's soccer coach at Western Illinois.

Women's tennis--Rose Ewan has resigned as women's tennis coach at Bucknell. She continues as associate athletics director.

Women's track and field--Seth Sheridan named full-time women's track and cross country coach at Belmont effective June 1. Sheridan, who is admissions counselor for the university, previously was part-time associate head coach of women's cross country.

Women's volleyball--Mora Kanim hired as head coach at Kent. Kanim has been first assistant coach at Michigan since 1992 ... Jim McLaughlin hired at Kansas State. McLaughlin is a former men's volleyball coach at Southern California, where his 1990 team won an NCAA championship.

Women's volleyball assistant--Sally Schulte hired as assistant coach at Dayton.

Wrestling--Todd Yde, Wisconsin-Oshkosh head coach since 1992, resigned. Yde finished his Wisconsin-Oshkosh career with a 22-42-1 dual meet record.

STAFF

Athletics academic advisor--Adam Waltzer appointed administrative assistant and academic advisor for the men's basketball program at Wright State.

Compliance director--Robert Edson promoted to director of athletics compliance at Syracuse.

Assistant compliance director--Amy Protzman named assistant director of compliance at Syracuse, succeeding Robert Edson, who was promoted to compliance director.

External relations director--Seth Bennett, director of marketing and promotions at North Carolina-Greensboro since October 1995, named external relations director at the school. Bennett succeeds Justin Skwara, who resigned to pursue other business interests.

Sports information assistant--Bridget Toomey hired as assistant sports information director at Illinois. Toomey, who was a member of the Illini women's basketball team, has been a student assistant and an intern in the sports information office at Illinois.

Sports medicine director--Susan Walsh appointed director of sports medicine at DePaul. Walsh has been associate director of sports medicine at the school since 1992.

ASSOCIATIONS

Chuck Neinas, executive director of the College Football Association, will join the American Football Coaches Association as an associate when the CFA ceases operations June 30. Neinas will serve as the AFCA liaison to the NCAA in legislative matters affecting football. Neinas had been executive director of the CFA since 1980.

The AFCA also announced a staff restructuring in response to increased activity relating to promotion and protection of football and education of the AFCA membership. Walter Abercrombie, assistant to the executive director, has been named director of education and special projects. Todd Bell, assistant director of communications, was promoted to director of publications and publicity. Grey Cavitt, a secretary with the association the past year, will handle membership services and coordinate the association's World Wide Web site.


NOTABLES

The Collegiate Commissioners Association has awarded the Award of Merit to Dave Hart, Ken Free and Carl James. The CCA annually honors former commissioners for their service. Hart was commissioner of the Southern Conference, James of the former Big Eight Conference and Free of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference.


DEATHS

Kenneth Haas, a member of the Missouri football team in the 1930s, died April 13 in St. Louis. He was 80. Haas played football at Missouri from 1937 to 1939 and was captain of the 1939 team that played in the Orange Bowl. He played in the 1940 college football all-star game and then rejected an offer to play professional football for the Detroit Lions.

Ben Gregory, assistant football coach at Colorado, died of a heart attack April 17 in Boulder, Colorado. He was 50. Gregory was a two-time all-Big Eight Conference running back at Nebraska before playing two seasons for the Buffalo Bills, in 1968 and 1969.

Elmore "Scoop" Hudgins, the first sports information director at Vanderbilt and at the Southeastern Conference, died after a long illness. He was 78. Hudgins was SID at Vanderbilt from 1949 to 1961 and then at the SEC until he retired as assistant commissioner in 1983.

Glenn "Abe" Martin, known as "Mr. Everything" at Southern Illinois, where he coached football, basketball and baseball, died April 17 at age 91. Martin was a member of the Southern Illinois football and track teams and then returned to the school to coach football in 1939. He added duties as head basketball coach in 1943 and was athletics director from 1943 to 1953. In 1947, he became baseball coach. The Southern Illinois baseball field was named in his honor in 1971.
