Interpretations Committee minutes

Conference No. 1
January 30, 1997

Acting for the NCAA Council, the Interpretations Committee issued the following interpretations:

Preseason Practice/Practice Opportunities

1. Calculating Starting Date for Preseason Practice (Divisions I, II and III). For purposes of calculating the starting date for preseason practice in a particular sport that uses the practice-opportunities formula (e.g., soccer, football), the first day of practice may be conducted on the day when the last practice opportunity occurs, which is determined by counting backward from the day of the first permissible regularly scheduled contest. For example, in women's volleyball, practice may be held on the day that the 29th practice opportunity actually occurs, counting backward from the day of the first permissible regularly scheduled contest. Basketball/Official Visits

2. Official Visits -- Division I-A Football/Division I Basketball (Divisions I-A and I). An institution that does not use all of its 56 visits for the current academic year (through July 31, 1997) is permitted to "bank" a maximum of six visits to be used during the 1997-98 academic year. In addition, the committee noted that the time frame for counting official visits pursuant to 13.7.1.6 in the sports of football and basketball is August 1 through July 31.
