Nominations sought for II sports committees

Nominees are being sought to fill positions on five Division II sports committees and positions for Division II representatives on two Association-wide sports committees.

Nominees selected for the positions will serve terms beginning September 1, 1997. Current Division II sports committee members whose terms are scheduled to end September 1 have been invited to extend their terms by one year.

Vacancies on the sports committees were created either by expansion of the committees resulting from restructuring or by current members' decision not to accept the invitation to extend their terms.

The vacancies:

  • Division II Baseball Committee. One vacancy (to replace Burt Kahn, Quinnipiac College). Appointee must be an administrator representing the New England baseball region.

  • Division II Women's Basketball Committee. One vacancy (to replace Britt S. King of the University of the District of Columbia). Appointee preferably should be from the East basketball region.

  • Division II Field Hockey Committee. Two vacancies (both are new positions). Both appointees must be administrators; one preferably from the North field hockey region and one to be selected at large.

  • Football Rules Committee. One vacancy (to replace Richard B. Lowry, Hillsdale College). Appointee must be an administrator.

  • Division II Football Committee. Two vacancies (to replace Ronald F. Harms of Texas A&M University-Kingsville and Andrew W. Hinson of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania). One appointee must be from the Northeast football region; one must be from the West region.

  • Division II Men's Ice Hockey Committee. One vacancy (a new position). Appointee must be an administrator and will be selected at large.

  • Men's Lacrosse Committee. Two vacancies on this committee with both championships-administration and rules responsibilities (both positions are new and will have championships-administration responsibilities only). One of the two appointees must be an administrator.

Nominations for these sports committee vacancies will be reviewed by the new NCAA Division II Nominating Committee (see accompanying story on page 3). Appointments will be made by the NCAA Division II Championships Committee and will be ratified by the NCAA Division II Management Council.

Sports committee appointees can serve one four-year term, although under legislation adopted at the 1997 Convention, members may be appointed for less than a full term whenever it is necessary to achieve staggered terms. Members who serve more than one-half of a term in such instances shall be considered to have served a full term.

Appointees must be salaried on a regular basis by a Division II institution or conferences and performing a regular staff function representing at least 50 percent of the normal workload for a staff member at that institution or conference.

At least 50 percent of positions on sports committees governing both team and individual sports must be filled by athletics administrators. Division II permits an institutional staff member who performs both coaching and administrative functions to be counted as either an administrator or coach.

Nominations must be submitted by April 25 on a nomination form that can be obtained from Julie Quickel, NCAA committee coordinator, at the national office. The completed nomination form should be faxed to Quickel at 913/339-0035.

Self-nominations are encouraged, as well as nominations by peers. Once Quickel receives a nomination form, she will send an information form via fax to the nominee, which must be returned (preferably via fax) by May 2.
