Harlan to resurrect St. Anselm football

Geoffrey Harlan, defensive coach at Villanova, has been selected to lead the resurrected football program at St. Anselm, effective July 1.

Football was last played at St. Anselm in 1941, when the program was discontinued due to World War II.

Harlan has been an assistant coach at Villanova for the past nine years. He joined the Villanova staff as a graduate assistant secondary coach for the 1988 season. After one season, he was named outside linebackers coach and special-teams coach. In 1993, Harlan became defensive line coach.

During his tenure at Villanova, Harlan also served as academic coordinator, strength and conditioning coach, and the football team's video coordinator.

Harlan was a three-year letterwinner for Middlebury. After graduating, he stayed on as a graduate assistant coach and then moved to Hobart in 1987, where he was defensive line coach.


GENERAL

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Dean Matthew Witty selected as director of athletics, physical education and recreation at Stevens Tech. Witty has been at Stevens Tech since 1989, coaching men's lacrosse for six years and women's soccer for three years. He will retain his duties as lacrosse coach.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Bill Shults appointed assistant athletics director for compliance at Connecticut. Shults has been assistant director for compliance and student services at Florida State since 1992. He served as head swimming coach at Florida State from 1982 to 1990, when he was appointed administrator for nonrevenue sports there ... Bill Denniston, assistant athletics director at Alderson-Broaddus for the past three years, hired as head men's soccer coach at Robert Morris. Denniston also was head soccer coach at Alderson-Broaddus.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

David Phillips appointed faculty athletics representative at Wabash. Phillips has taught chemistry at the college since 1968.

COACHES

Men's basketball--Stetson announced the resignation of Randy Brown, who recently completed his second season as head coach. During his stint, the Hatters compiled a 19-35 record. Brown was an assistant coach at Stetson for two years before becoming head coach ... Tommy Amaker, an assistant coach at Duke, hired as head coach at Seton Hall. Amaker was part of Duke's run of seven Final Four appearances in nine years, first as a player and then as assistant coach ... Mark Slonaker named head coach at Mercer ... Larry Gipson, former head coach at Toledo, hired at Northeastern State, succeeding Ken Hayes, who retired. Gipson also coached Northeastern A&M (Oklahoma) to the 1989 national junior college championship ... Texas-Pan American announced that the contract of head coach Mark Adams will not be renewed. Since joining the staff in 1992-93, Adams has compiled a 44-90 record ... Sherman Dillard hired at James Madison. Dillard spent the past three seasons at Indiana State, leading the Sycamores to a 29-52 record. He has been an assistant at Maryland, California and Georgia Tech. Dillard is a member of the James Madison sports hall of fame and the No. 2 all-time scorer at the school.

Women's basketball--Mankato State announced that the contract of head coach Joan Anderson will not be renewed. Anderson, who coached at Bemidji State and Weber State before taking over the Mankato State program in 1989-90, led the Mavericks to a 95-121 record during her eight years ... Tara VanDerveer given a five-year contract extension at Stanford. The new contract extends through 2002. VanDerveer, who became head coach in 1985, led her 1997 team to the Sweet Sixteen for the 10th consecutive year.

Women's basketball assistant--Phylette Blake, assistant coach at Georgia Southern, resigned after two years there. Blake was a basketball standout at the school from 1985 to 1989 and then played professionally overseas for six years before joining the Georgia Southern staff.

Field hockey--Widener head coach Caron Cramer resigned, effective at the end of the 1997 lacrosse season, to accept a high-school position. Cramer has coached both the field hockey and lacrosse teams at Widener since 1989.

Football--Daniel MacNeill, an assistant at Villanova since 1984, selected as head coach at Cortland State. MacNeill has been linebackers coach and defensive coordinator.

Football assistants--Ron Hudson and Joe Woods joined the Kent football staff. Hudson, who was offensive line coach at Lenoir-Rhyne last season, will coach tight ends. Woods, defensive backs and special teams coach at Grand Valley State since 1994, will work with the secondary ... Mike Gundy named wide receivers coach at Maryland, replacing Sean Payton, who resigned to become quarterbacks coach for the Philadelphia Eagles. Gundy was quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator at Baylor last season ... Deon Chester selected as running backs coach at Western Michigan. Chester spent the last two seasons as receivers coach at Indiana.

Virginia announced the appointment of three assistant coaches: Sparky Woods, an assistant at Memphis for the past two years, named offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, succeeding Joe Krivak, who resigned; David Turner, assistant coach at North Carolina State for the past two years, named defensive tackles coach, replacing Jerry Petercuskie, who joined the coaching staff at Boston College; and Paul Schudel, an assistant at Illinois for the past two years, named offensive line coach ... Charlie West appointed defensive backs coach at Rutgers. West most recently was defensive backs coach at Syracuse in 1994 and 1995.

Men's and women's golf assistant--Doug Hill hired as assistant golf coach and assistant golf professional at Purdue. Hill graduated from Ferris State with a professional golf management degree.

Women's lacrosse--Widener head coach Caron Cramer resigned, effective at the end of the 1997 season, to accept a high-school position. Cramer has coached both the field hockey and lacrosse teams at Widener since 1989.

Men's soccer--Seth Roland appointed head men's coach at Fairleigh Dickinson. Roland spent the past five years as top assistant at William and Mary ... Ty Keough, head men's coach at Washington (Missouri) for the past 10 seasons, resigned to pursue an expanded career in broadcasting. His resignation is effective April 30. Keough, who compiled a 137-47-16 record at Washington, has served as a commentator for several networks, including serving on ESPN's lead announcing team for the 1994 World Cup ... Bill Denniston hired as head coach at Robert Morris. Denniston joins the Colonials after spending three years as head soccer coach and assistant athletics director at Alderson-Broaddus.

Women's soccer--John Cossaboon hired as head women's coach at San Diego. Cossaboon was head coach at UC Santa Barbara for the past two years ... Libbie Tobin hired as head women's soccer coach at Robert Morris. Tobin was head coach at West Virginia Wesleyan in 1995 and 1996, compiling a 25-4-3 record.

Women's soccer assistant--Tim Tsohantaridis, assistant coach for the men's soccer team at George Fox for the past four seasons, has moved to the women's team as assistant coach. Tsohantaridis also is an assistant professor of religion at George Fox.

Women's track and field assistant--Chris Sloan hired as full-time assistant coach of the women's track and field team at Central Florida. Sloan, in his second year at the school, previously was a part-time coach.

Women's volleyball--Dawn Dockstader, associate head volleyball coach at Valparaiso last year, named head coach at DePaul. Dockstader also has been an assistant coach at Central Michigan.

STAFF

Athletics advancement director--Bill Taylor, director of news services at Ferris State for the past 14 years and formerly sports information director, reassigned to the new position of director of athletics advancement.

Golf professional--Doug Wert named head golf professional at Penn State. Wert has served as head professional at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee, for the past three years.

Sports medicine director--DePaul announced the resignation of Mike McCormick as director of sports medicine. McCormick also directed the athletic training minor program. He will be director of AthleticCo., a sports medicine and physical therapy clinic in Chicago.

NATIONAL OFFICE STAFF

Laurie Bollig named assistant director of special events in the marketing, licensing and promotions group at the NCAA national office. Bollig has been a publications editor since joining the Association staff in 1990 and has served as staff liaison to the NCAA Men's and Women's Basketball Rules Committees.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

CORRECTIONS

Due to a typographical error, a position was listed incorrectly in the classified ads published in the March 10 issue of The NCAA News. The advertisement is for a head baseball coach at the University of Texas, Pan American (see the March 24 issue for the correct advertisement).

In Division II Men's Indoor Track Championships results listed in the March 17 issue of The NCAA News, the school affiliation of Ossie Mdziniso was listed incorrectly. Mdziniso placed second in the 800-meter run representing Augustana (South Dakota).

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Youngstown State has been admitted to the Gateway Football Conference and will be eligible this fall to compete for the league's automatic bid in the Division I-AA Football Championship. The addition of Youngstown State increases league membership to seven schools. Youngstown State previously competed as an independent in football.


NOTABLES

Chad Strickland, a 6-1 junior outside hitter for Cal State Northridge, named national men's volleyball player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. For the week, Strickland hit .427 and tallied 70 kills, 25 digs and 11 blocks.

Marianna Freeman, head women's basketball coach at Syracuse, and Jim Lewis, head coach at George Mason, have been named assistant coaches for USA Basketball's 1997 Women's Junior World Championship team. They join Penn State head coach Rene Portland, who will be head coach for the championship staff. The 12-member team will be selected after national team trials in June and will participate in the world championship, scheduled for July 5-13 in Natal, Brazil.


DEATHS

Mike O'Connor, assistant football coach at Bucknell for the past 14 years, died February 16. He was 42. O'Connor served on the Bison staff under four head coaches as wide receivers coach, offensive backfield coach and offensive coordinator, and quarterbacks coach. He was a graduate of West Chester and received a master's degree from Connecticut. Before joining the Bucknell staff in 1983, O'Connor coached at Connecticut and American International.
