Kenyon rolls to 18th straight victory in III men's swimming

All is normal again in Division III men's swimming.

After a blip on the screen when Kenyon lost its conference meet for the first time in 44 years, the Lords made a resounding return to national dominance by compiling a record score at the Division III Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 20-22 at Oxford, Ohio.

The Lords won all five relay events and parlayed impressive performances by all-Americans Pedro Monteiro and David Phillips into an 18th consecutive team title.

It didn't take long for coach Jim Steen's Lords to assume command as their 200-yard freestyle relay team of Ken Heis, Darrick Bollinger, Richard Thoms and Matt Miller stroked to a meet record in just the meet's third preliminary heat. The same foursome then topped that mark to lead off that evening's finals.

Phillips and Heis followed with wins in the 500- and 50-yard freestyles, respectively, and Monteiro led a dramatic rally in Kenyon's 400-yard medley relay victory to give the Lords a commanding 136-point lead after the first day's events.

Bollinger's win in the 200-yard freestyle and two more relay wins highlighted the second day, and Monteiro set a sizzling record during the final day to electrify the crowd. Monteiro, a world-class butterfly performer, smashed his own 1995 mark in the 200-yard butterfly by nearly three seconds in the preliminaries and just missed eclipsing the mark again in winning the finals. Monteiro also captured the crown in the 100-yard backstroke to join Phillips as a double winner.

In all, Kenyon compiled 6891/2 points, the highest team total in the championships' 23-year history. UC San Diego, scoring 107 points in the two distance freestyle events, placed second for the sixth time in the last nine years. Denison, which had ended Kenyon's North Coast Conference reign in February, finished third and Union (New York) edged Williams for fourth.

As much as Kenyon dominated, the meet's brightest star was Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Gary Simon, who won three events and set two meet records. A transfer from Loyola Marymount, Simon blasted to a meet record in the preliminaries of the 200-yard individual medley and topped it again in the finals. He also won the 100-yard breaststroke after setting another record in the preliminaries, then clinched swimmer-of-the-meet honors with his final-day win in the 200-yard breaststroke.

In all, five meet records fell. Besides those set by Simon and Monteiro, Matt Johnson of Johns Hopkins established a new standard in the 100-yard butterfly, besting his own mark set last year.

Other individual event winners included Jeremy Francioni of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in the 200-yard backstroke, Jean-Paul Gowdy of Middlebury in the 400-yard individual medley and John Young of Williams, who successfully defended his crown in the 100-yard freestyle.

In diving, John Karpe of Wisconsin-Stevens Point took the one-meter crown and placed second in the three-meter to earn diver-of-the-meet honors. Kalamazoo's Jeffrey Gorton passed Karpe on the last dive to win the three-meter event. Karpe's coach, Debi Campbell, was named diving coach of the meet.

The swimming coach of the meet was Wisconsin-Stevens Point's Red Blair, who is retiring after guiding his team to a seventh-place finish in his last of 32 years as head coach.
