Christopher Newport needs just four events to win III women's track

How many student-athletes does it take to win the Division III Women's Indoor Track Championships?

Four, judging from Christopher Newport's performance at this year's event March 7-8 at Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

Getting a pair of first-place showings by Tamiko Patterson, Christopher Newport accumulated 47 points in only four events to win the title.

The victory gave Christopher Newport a championships-record five crowns and ended a four-year title drought.

The team's 47-point output was the highest total since Cortland State claimed the 1990 team title with 50 points.

CCNY earned runner-up honors -- its best finish ever -- with 36 points. Wisconsin-Oshkosh, seeking an unprecedented fourth consecutive team title, placed third with 30 points. The College of New Jersey and Hamline tied for fourth.

Patterson won the long jump and triple jump to become only the fourth competitor in championships history to win both events. Patterson, who also placed third in the 55-meter dash, registered a mark of 5.55 meters (18 feet, 21/2) in the long jump and leaped 12.20 meters (40-01/2) to claim the triple jump.

Meshailay Robinson and Bridgett Cochran joined Patterson in the winner's circle as they claimed the 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles titles, respectively. Robinson finished in 7.16 seconds, while Cochran clocked in at 8.21.

Jennifer Gilmartin accounted for Christopher Newport's final point with a sixth-place showing in the 55-meter hurdles.

Three championships records fell during the meet as Jacquline Hunter of CCNY, Kim Kiner of Loras and Missy Oleson of Wisconsin-Oshkosh eclipsed records in the 400-meter dash, shot put and 20-pound weight throw, respectively.

Hunter posted a time of 56.07 seconds in the 400 to break the 10-year-old mark of 56.66 set by Murtonda Durant of Massachusetts-Boston, while Kiner surpassed the 1986 mark of 14.51 (47-71/4) set by Claudia Stanley of Christopher Newport.

Oleson shattered her own mark, which she set in 1996.

Victoria Petrillo of Brandeis and Heidi Swarts of Cortland State successfully defended individual titles, winning the 800- and 1,500-meter runs, respectively.
