Roster of first Division I Management Council now complete

The membership of the first Division I Management Council has been determined.

The roster is similar to the makeup of the transition Management Council, which was announced last May. Twenty-six of the 34 members who were appointed to the original transition group will serve on the actual Management Council.

Of the eight new appointments, some changes were made because an appointee no longer fit the criteria for membership (a change of position or institution, for example). In other cases, modifications were made to fit the gender and ethnic-diversity requirements that were established at the January Convention.

Biographical information follows on the eight members who were not originally appointed to the transition Management Council:

David M. Guinn

Guinn is faculty athletics representative and professor of law at Baylor University and vice-chair of the faculty representatives for the Big Twelve Conference. He will serve as chair of that body in 1997-98.

Guinn teaches in the area of constitutional law, civil rights and local government. In 1991, he was involved in the redistricting of the Texas House of Representatives and Senate.

He attended undergraduate school at Baylor, where he received his J.D. in 1963. He was awarded an L.L.M. in international law from Michigan in 1966.

That same year, he was designated the Louise L. Morrison Professor of Constitutional Law at Baylor, where he has now taught for more than 30 years.

Alan J. Hauser

Hauser has served in a faculty athletics role since 1979, when he joined the athletics council at Appalachian State University.

In 1986, he was selected as the university's faculty athletics representative and has continued in that role since.

Hauser joined Appalachian State as an assistant professor of philosophy and religion in 1972 and became chair of the department in 1982. He has served 12 years in the faculty senate, including two years as chair.

A 1967 graduate of Concordia Teachers College, Hauser earned a master's degree from Concordia Seminary in 1968 and his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa in 1972.

He has taught at Concordia and Iowa Wesleyan College, in addition to Appalachian State. He has been active in Southern Conference affairs, having served a term as president.

Constance H. Hurlbut

Hurlbut is in her fourth year as executive director of the Patriot League.

She was the first woman to serve as commissioner of a joint men's and women's all-sport Division I conference when she began her duties in 1993.

Hurlbut was appointed to the NCAA Council in 1995. She also has been a member of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Committee and currently serves as a Council representative to the NCAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.

A 1983 graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, where she competed in field hockey and lacrosse, she joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1984 as assistant commissioner. In 1989, she became the first associate executive director for the Ivy Group.

Edward "Ted" Leland

Leland is completing his sixth year as athletics director at Stanford University.

Leland, who previously served as athletics director at the University of the Pacific (California) and Dartmouth College, is a member of the NCAA Council.

At Stanford, he has overseen a number of improvements in the university's athletics facilities and also has spearheaded major fund-raising initiatives. Since his arrival in fall 1991, Stanford has won 20 NCAA team championships. In 1994-95 and 1995-96, Stanford won the Sears Cup Trophy, emblematic of the top athletics program in the nation.

He began his athletics career at Stanford in 1978, serving as an assistant football coach under Bill Walsh. He is a 1970 graduate of Pacific, where he also earned his master's degree. He was awarded a Ph.D. in education by Stanford in 1982.

Richard McDuffie

McDuffie joined Southeast Missouri State University as athletics director in 1989 with the primary responsibility of guiding the program from Division II to Division I.

That transition was completed in 1990, and the university now is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference.

McDuffie is in his 18th year as an athletics director, previously having served at the University of North Texas, Central Connecticut State University and Seattle University.

McDuffie was a pole vaulter while an undergraduate at East Carolina University. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from East Carolina and a doctorate from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Marilyn McNeil

McNeil joined Monmouth University (New Jersey) as athletics director in 1994 after having served in a similar capacity at California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo.

McNeil also is a former president of the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators. She served on the NCAA Special Committee on Student-Athlete Welfare, Access and Equity and also has been a member of the NCAA Committee on Financial Aid and Amateurism.

A native of Canada, McNeil earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Calgary in 1968 and a master's degree from McGill University in 1974. In 1993, she was awarded a doctorate from Washington State University.

In college, she was a member of the basketball and volleyball teams, sports that she also coached after graduation. She was women's basketball coach at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, from 1979 to 1986.

Andrea Seger

Ball State University's Seger is one of six women serving as an athletics director at an NCAA Division I-A institution.

She previously served as women's athletics director at Ball State. During her tenure in that capacity, the Cardinals won seven Mid-American Conference field hockey titles, along with two volleyball championships.

She was named women's athletics director in 1983 after serving eight years as an assistant professor and assistant athletic trainer at Ball State. She is a graduate of State University College at Cortland, where she lettered in field hockey and volleyball.

Seger has a master's degree from Indiana State University. She is a member of the NCAA Committee on Athletics Certification and has twice served on the selection committee for a new Mid-American Conference commissioner.

Charles Whitcomb

Whitcomb, now in his 14th year as faculty athletics representative at San Jose State University, has been actively involved in the NCAA committee structure.

He has chaired the Association's Committee on Committees and currently is chair of the Minority Opportunities and Interests Committee.

He also currently is a member of the Committee on Athletics Certification and the Academic Requirements Committee.

Whitcomb is a 1971 graduate of San Jose State, from which he also received a master's degree in 1973. He earned a doctorate from the University of Northern Colorado in 1976.

Whitcomb, a professor in the department of recreation and leisure studies, recently returned to teaching full time after a stint as department chair.

He is a past president of the Big West Conference and currently serves on the long-range planning committee of the Western Athletic Conference.
