MacLeod named athletics director at Tulsa

Judy MacLeod, interim athletics director at Tulsa since September 1995, has been named AD at the school.

MacLeod now is one of six women who serve as athletics director at 111 NCAA Division I-A schools.

MacLeod is in her seventh year at Tulsa, where she joined the staff in August 1990 after serving as a sports manager for the Goodwill Games. She was appointed associate AD in June 1994 after serving as an assistant AD for one year. She also served as Tulsa's senior woman administrator.

MacLeod serves on the university's compliance committee and Title IX task force and is a member of the Western Athletic Conference planning committee.

After graduating from Puget Sound in 1986, MacLeod was hired as an assistant women's basketball coach at Seattle. She continued in the position until 1990. She earned a master's degree in athletics administration at Tulsa in 1991.

Charles Anderson, president of Augsburg, announced his resignation, effective in August ... Jim Abbott, a Yankton, South Dakota, businessman, named president at South Dakota, effective July 1 ... Nancy Vickers selected as president at Bryn Mawr. Vickers has been dean of curriculum and professor of French, Italian and comparative literature at Southern California.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Houston announced the resignation of Bill Carr, athletics director since 1993, effective March 31. Carr was athletics director at Florida from 1979 to 1986 ... Timothy Dillon, AD at Alaska Anchorage, given additional duties as vice-chancellor for university advancement. Dillon, a member of the NCAA Council, is in his fifth year as AD ... Jim Moretti appointed at Alfred.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS

OF ATHLETICS

Tim Allen named assistant athletics director for football operations at Minnesota. Allen was a member of the Kansas football staff for the past 11 years, acting as administrative assistant in charge of on-campus recruiting and special off-the-field activities ... Rebecca McLaughlin appointed assistant AD for external affairs at Troy State. McLaughlin spent the past seven years as assistant AD at South Alabama, where she was responsible for marketing, development and promotions.

COACHES

Baseball--Stetson announced that the contract of head coach Pete Dunn has been extended to May 1999. Dunn is in his 18th year with the Hatters and has an overall record of 634-368-2 ... Salisbury State head coach Deane Deshon announced his retirement, effective at the conclusion of the 1997 season. Deshon enters his final season, his 34th as head of the Sea Gull program, with a 530-431-12 record.

Men's basketball--Mike Calhoun, head coach at Eastern Kentucky since 1992, announced his resignation. Calhoun has a 58-77 record at Eastern Kentucky ... Akron extended the contract of Dan Hipsher for three years, into 2002. Hipsher was named head coach in March 1995 ... Nichols announced the resignation of Rich Lengieza.

Women's basketball--Nancy Wilson, head coach at South Carolina for the past 13 seasons, announced her resignation. Wilson is South Carolina's most victorious coach with a 231-148 record ... Lock Haven head coach Frank Scarfo resigned his basketball duties to become assistant football coach at the school. Scarfo was Lock Haven's first full-time head coach of a women's sport and led the Lady Eagles for 11 years.

Men's and women's cross country--Ron Combs named head men's and women's coach at Wilmington (Ohio) after serving as an assistant coach for the past two years. Combs replaces Jim Boland, who stepped down after coaching the Quakers for the past 12 seasons.

Men's and women's cross country assistant--Marywood hired John Kirby as assistant men's and women's coach. Kirby is a former all-Pennsylvania Athletic Conference performer at Marywood and spent the past two seasons as a volunteer assistant there.

Football--Steve Gilbert named head coach at Jacksonville after nine years as head coach at Ursinus. Gilbert compiled a 41-48 record, including a 9-2 mark in 1996, while at Ursinus ... Akron extended the contract of head coach Lee Owens for three years, to 2002. Owens was appointed head coach in 1994 after three years as an assistant at Ohio State ... La Salle appointed Bill Manlove to bring its football program out of a 56-year hiatus. Manlove has spent much of his coaching career at Widener, where his teams were 182-53-1 and won two national championships. Manlove most recently was head coach at Delaware Valley ... Coast Guard athletics director Chuck Mills given additional duties as head football coach. Mills is considered the father of modern Japanese college football. Japan's version of the Heisman Trophy is named the Mills Trophy ... Joe White, an assistant at Columbia for the past 11 years, hired as head coach at Rhodes ... Mike Donnelly named head coach at Muhlenberg. Donnelly was an assistant for the past four years at Columbia.

Football assistants--Michael Carter appointed assistant coach at Georgia Southern. Carter was a graduate assistant and later quarterbacks and fullbacks coach at Hawaii ... Minnesota announced these football assignments: Vic Adamle as wide receivers coach; Mitch Browning as tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator; David Gibbs as defensive coordinator/defensive secondary coach; Reggie Mitchell as running backs coach; Gordon Shaw as defensive line coach; Mark Snyder as defensive ends coach; Steve Stripling as linebackers coach; Kevin Sumlin as quarterbacks coach; Elliot Uzelac as offensive coordinator/offensive line coach; and Chris Hartman as strength and conditioning coach ... Gary Emanuel hired as defensive tackles coach at Purdue. Emanuel has been defensive line coach at Washington State since 1994 ... UTEP appointed Gary Nord as offensive coordinator and Tom Turchetta as outside linebackers coach. Nord was wide receivers coach last season at Pittsburgh and Turchetta has been defensive line coach at Pittsburgh since 1992 ... Mac McDaniel named assistant head coach at Murray State ... Joe Philbin, an assistant coach for the past two seasons at Northeastern, hired as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Harvard. Hank Hughes named assistant head coach there.

Troy State announced the following appointments: Wayne Bolt moved to defensive coordinator and linebackers coach; Jim Dye, moved to offensive line coach; Mark Fleetwood hired as secondary coach; and Tracy Rocker hired as defensive line coach ... Women's soccer--Todd Wawrousek named the first full-time head women's soccer coach at Gettysburg. Wawrousek has been part-time head coach for the last seven years ... Jeff Pittman selected as head women's coach at Campbell ... Dave Turner, women's soccer coach at Fairfield, resigned.

Men's soccer assistants--Dayton appointed Dave Schureck as assistant men's coach. Schureck had been an assistant coach at Xavier (Ohio) since 1995 ... Dan Donigan named the first full-time assistant men's soccer coach at Saint Louis. Donigan was an assistant coach at Connecticut for the past three seasons.

Women's soccer assistant--Karen Ferguson hired as assistant women's coach at Connecticut.

Women's softball--Santa Clara announced the resignation of head coach John Bruno. Vicky Rios was named interim coach.

Women's swimming and diving--Maura Costin Scalise, women's swimming coach at Harvard, resigned.

Men's and women's tennis--Brian Friedland hired as men's and women's coach at Alfred.

STAFF

Athletic trainer--Kentucky appointed Jim Madaleno as head athletic trainer for football.

CONFERENCES

John Iamarino named commissioner of the Northeast Conference. Iamarino joins the Northeast Conference after 13 years with the Sun Belt Conference, where he served most recently as associate commissioner for marketing and corporate relations.

Joe Bertagna named commissioner of Hockey East after serving as hockey commissioner for the Eastern College Athletic Conference since February 1995. The appointment is effective July 1. Bertagna worked for the Boston Bruins from 1985 to 1991 and again in 1994-95.


NOTABLES

Paul Nihipali, a 6-7 opposite hitter for No. 5-ranked UCLA, named men's volleyball national player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. For the week, Nihipali hit .494 and tallied 52 kills, 10 digs and eight blocks.

Minnesota assistant women's volleyball coach Maurice Batie named to the coaching staff of the 1997 U.S. Girls Youth National Team. Batie will be assistant coach on a staff headed by Nick Cheronis, an assistant coach at Florida. The national team, a collection of the nation's elite players age 19 and under, will compete against other national teams this summer.

Finalists for the 1997 Boost-Naismith College Basketball Player of the Year Awards have been selected. The winners will be announced March 23. Six of the nation's top college football players have been named Col. Earl "Red" Blaik leadership honorees by the All-American Football Foundation. The honorees are Danny Wuerfful, Florida; Pat Fitzgerald, Northwestern; Billy Lyon, Marshall; Tony Ramirez, Northern Colorado; Bill Borchert, Mount Union; and Gerald Smith, Northern Alabama. The foundation also announced the 1996 Frank Leahy coaches of the year: Bruce Snyder, Arizona State; Bob Pruett, Marshall; Joe Glenn, Northern Colorado; and Larry Kehres, Mount Union.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Members of the newly formed Division III Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference are Pittsburgh-Greensburg, Penn State-Behrend, Pittsburgh-Bradford, Frostburg State and Lake Erie. The conference will begin its first season of competition in the 1997-98 academic year. Initial conference championships will be in men's and women's basketball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, baseball, men's golf, women's softball, women's tennis, and women's volleyball.

CORRECTIONS

The school where Mike Thomas was promoted to associate athletics director was reported incorrectly in the NCAA Record section of the February 24 issue of The NCAA News. Thomas was promoted from assistant to associate athletics director at Virginia. Jason Bauman was appointed to succeed Thomas as assistant AD at Virginia.

DEATHS

Harold Nichols, a national champion wrestler at Michigan who went on to become one of the collegiate sport's most successful and respected coaches, died February 23. He was 79. Nichols retired after the 1984-85 season with an overall record of 492-93-14 that included five years at Arkansas State and 32 at Iowa State. Nichols coached the Cyclones to six NCAA and seven Big Eight Conference team championships. He captured Big Ten Conference and NCAA titles as a 145-pound wrestler at Michigan in 1939. Nichols served on the NCAA Wrestling Committee and the Olympic Wrestling Committee.

Jim Banner, former track coach at Pittsburgh and athletics director at Carnegie Mellon, died February 23. He was 69. Banner was an assistant track coach at Pittsburgh from 1961 to 1966 and head coach there from 1966 to 1975. He was appointed AD at Carnegie Mellon in 1975 and retired in 1988. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Sports Hall of Fame.

Earle Edwards, whose 17-year stint at North Carolina State remains the longest for any Wolfpack football coach, died February 25 in Raleigh, North Carolina. He was 88. Edwards coached North Carolina State from 1954 through 1970, winning three Atlantic Coast Conference titles and sharing two others.
