Nominations due for III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

After stressing the active role student-athletes will have in the restructured Division III, the division now is in need of nominations of student-athletes to serve on its committees.

The deadline for nominations for student-athletes for the new Division III Student-Athlete Advisory Committee has been extended to March 14 because of an insufficient number of nominations received since the call went out February 3.

The new Division III Nominating Committee, meeting for the first time March 1, called for the additional nominations.

The committee agreed upon guiding principles and committee appointment procedures that it will use throughout the nomination process.

In the new governance structure, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will consist of 24 members, which allows for 16 more Division III student-athletes to participate than in the old Association-wide student-athlete committee. Division III had eight representatives on that body.

Self-nominations are encouraged as well as nominations by peers. Up to two student-athletes can be selected from a Division III conference, with one male and one female.

Nominations also are being sought for a student-athlete representative to serve on the Division III Championships Committee, Eligibility and Infractions Committee, and Financial Aid and Awards Committee.

The advisory committee is expected to meet three times during a calendar year -- January, July and one other meeting during the academic year.

All travel and accommodation expenses are paid for student-athletes attending committee meetings.

Nominations should be sent to Julie Quickel, NCAA committee and scholarship coordinator, at the national office by March 14. Once Quickel receives a nomination, she will send an information form by fax to the nominee. The form should be returned to her, preferably by fax (913/339-0035), by March 21.

The Nominating Committee will meet March 13 and 14 to begin the appointment process for the remaining Division III general committees and sports committees. The committee plans to have the appointment process completed before the April meeting of the Management Council.

Arthur Eason, athletics director at William Paterson College, was appointed to a two-year term as chair of the Nominating Committee during the meeting.
