Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee may expand

Nominations are being sought for an expanded Division I Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee that likely will act as a bridge from the current structure to the new one.

The current Council Subcommittee on Initial-Eligibility Waivers has six members, but that number has proven to be insufficient because of changes in the Division I initial-eligibility certification process.

The current Council will be asked to sponsor noncontroversial legislation to expand the new Initial-Eligibility Waivers Committee, as identified in 1997 Convention Proposal No. 28. This action also will be reviewed by the Division I Management Council.

The increase in size is necessary at this time because of the timing of the academic year, along with the anticipated workload of the committee.

In the new governance structure, which will take effect August 1, the committee will report to the Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet.

Individuals who are interested in making a nomination either may contact their conference office or submit the nomination in writing to Julie Quickel, committee and scholarship coordinator, at the national office. Nominations made to Quickel are due March 7. Individuals may nominate themselves.

Every Division I subdivision is to be represented on the committee, with no more than 50 percent of the membership coming from one subdivision.

In addition, the committee is expected to contain five subcommittees. They are:

  • Learning disabilities.

  • Home schooling.

  • Foreign students.

  • Core courses.

  • Transcript changes.

Those making nominations are asked to identify which area would best fit the nominee.
