Iowa's Bowlsby named chair

Robert A. Bowlsby, director of athletics at the University of Iowa, has been selected as the first chair of the NCAA Division I Management Council.

Bowlsby was chosen by the members of the Management Council at the group's first meeting February 4. He will serve a two-year term and will not be eligible for immediate reelection.

Bowlsby became Iowa's 10th athletics director in June 1991, joining the program from the University of Northern Iowa, where he had served as athletics director since 1984. He previously served as director of athletics facilities at Northern Iowa.

He currently serves as chair of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and also is a member of the United States Olympic Committee's NCAA/USOC Liaison Committee.

Bowlsby also has served as chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee, the NCAA Committee on Financial Aid and Amateurism, and the NCAA Special Committee to Review Amateurism Issues.

In addition, Bowlsby is a member of the executive committees of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics and the Division I-A Athletics Directors Association.

He received a bachelor's degree from Moorhead State University in 1975 and a master's degree from Iowa in 1978.
