Nomination process to begin soon in Division I

Individuals at Division I member institutions or conferences who are interested in serving on an NCAA committee or who wish to recommend another person for committee service are reminded that nominations now must be made through Division I conferences listed in Constitution 4.2.1-(a), (b) and (c).

In the new structure, the Division I conferences will appoint their representatives to the four cabinets (Academics/Eligibility/Compliance, Championships/Competition, Strategic Planning, and Business/Finance). The NCAA Division I Management Council will review the appointements and also select chairs for each cabinet.

Unless specified, the Management Council also will appoint Division I committees, including chairs. When specified, committees that are subordinate to a cabinet will be appointed by that cabinet.

The process is significantly different from the method used in the previous structure, in which nominations were submitted to the NCAA Nominating Committee or the Men's and Women's Committees on Committees.

Existing committees that wish to identify replacements for outgoing members still will be able to do so under the new structure. Rather than communicating with the national office, however, they will need to make the recommendations to the appropriate conferences, which may make as many nominations as they believe necessary.

In most cases, the vacancies to be filled will be only for individuals on existing committees whose terms expire in September 1997. For example, the Division I members of the previous NCAA Committee on Financial Aid and Amateurism will constitute the new Division I committee. Members whose terms expire in September would be replaced; the remaining members would serve out the terms to which they were elected originally.

A formal call for nominations will appear in The NCAA News after the Management Council's February meeting. The appointment process probably will be completed by early April.

The Management Council will make appointments to the following Division I committees:

  • Financial Aid and Amateurism.

  • Initial-Eligibility Waivers.

  • Football Issues.

  • Athletics Certification.

  • Infractions.

  • Infractions Appeals.

  • Student-Athlete Advisory.

The Management Council also will make Division I appointments to the following Association-wide or common committees:

  • Initial-Eligibility Clearinghouse.

  • Honors.

  • Postgraduate Scholarship.

  • Walter Byers Scholarship.

Division I appointments to the following Association-wide committees will be made by the appropriate cabinet:

  • Competitive Safeguards and Medical Aspects of Sports (Championships/Competition).

  • Minority Opportunities and Interests, National Youth Sports Program, Olympic Sports Liaison, Research, and Women's Athletics (Strategic Planning).

Division I playing-rules and sports committees will be appointed by the Championships/Competition Cabinet.
