III committee nominations due February 28

Nominations for the remainder of the new Division III general committees and sports committees are being solicited from member institutions in preparation for implementation of the new governance structure in August.

The NCAA Division III Nominating Committee will coordinate the nomination and selection process for the Eligibility and Infractions, Financial Aid and Awards, Interpretations and Legislation, Membership, and Student-Athlete Advisory Committees on behalf of the NCAA Division III Management Council and Presidents Council. The Nominating Committee also will coordinate the nomination and selection process for various sports committees on behalf of the NCAA Division III Championships Committee, Management Council and Presidents Council.

Nominations should be sent to Julie Quickel, NCAA committee and scholarship coordinator, at the national office by Friday, February 28. The Nominating Committee will begin reviewing nominations at its meeting March 2. No special form is needed to submit nominations, which may be sent via fax, e-mail or mail.

Self-nominations are encouraged, as well as nominations by peers. Once Quickel receives a nomination, she will send an information form via fax to the nominee, which then must be returned to her, preferably by fax.

Representatives on existing committees in the Association's current structure will be invited to fill vacancies on the new committees for the amount of time remaining on their terms of service, provided a new committee is charged with handling the same topic area as the current committee.

The Nominating Committee will present its recommendations to the Management Council in April, which will in turn make its recommendations for committee appointments to the Presidents Council for final approval.

General committees

Each of the following general committees will have a representative of the Management Council as a member. Members may be appointed for less than full terms as necessary to adjust the membership of a committee and ensure that all terms do not expire at the same time.

  • The new Division III Eligibility and Infractions Committee will consist of 10 members, nine of whom are active staff members at Division III institutions or conferences and one who is a representative of the general public. The committee will include five men and five women, and at least one member must be an ethnic minority.

The committee will be divided into an eligibility subcommittee and an infractions subcommittee after it is established.

  • The Financial Aid and Awards Committee will have nine members, including two financial aid administrators, a student-athlete and at least one ethnic minority. At least four members should be men and four should be women.

  • The Interpretations and Legislation Committee will have seven members, including a student-athlete representative and at least one ethnic minority. At least three members should be men and three should be women.

  • The Membership Committee will have nine members, with at least two members appointed from each of the four geographical regions and one at large. This is an entirely new committee, not evolving from any existing committee, so no members will carry over from any present committee. At least four members should be women and four should be men, and at least one member must be an ethnic minority.

  • The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee will consist of 24 members, including four from each of the four geographical regions and eight members appointed at large. Not more than two committee members can be from the same playing conference and at least three members must be ethnic minorities. Two members of the Management Council will serve as ex officio members.

    Sports committees

Members of the Division III sports committees will be nominated by the Nominating Committee and appointed by the Championships Committee, subject to final approval by the Mangement Council and Presidents Council.

At least 50 percent of the positions on each team sports committee and 25 percent of the positions on each individual sports committee will be filled by athletics administrators who do not serve as institutional coaching staff members in that Division III sport. Athletics administrators are defined as athletics directors, associate or assistant athletics directors, senior woman administrators, individuals who are employed full time as administrators by member conferences, or individuals who are employed both part time as administrators by conference members and full time by member institutions.

Representation on sports committees is by district or region. Member institutions can determine what district or region they are in for a particular sport by checking the sports-sponsorship lists on NCAA Online (www.ncaa.org) or through the NCAA fax-on-demand system.

Nominees are being sought for members of five Division III sports committees with championships-administration and playing-rules responsibilities -- baseball, men's lacrosse, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's track and field, and wrestling.

Nominees also are needed for certain committees with only championships-administration responsibilities.

The sports committees for which nominations are needed and the regions from which those nominations need to come are:

  • Men's basketball -- Atlantic and Great Lakes regions.

  • Women's basketball -- East and Central.

  • Field Hockey -- any region.

  • Football -- one from each of the four regions.

  • Men's golf-- Districts 2, 4 and 5.

  • Men's ice hockey -- East.

  • Women's lacrosse -- North Central and Central.

  • Men's soccer -- New England, Northeast, South and Central.

  • Women's soccer -- New England, New York, Great Lakes and one at large.

  • Women's softball -- Atlantic.

  • Men's and women's tennis -- men's representative from South; women's representative from Midwest.

  • Women's volleyball -- Great Lakes and New York.
