Early named AD at Arkansas-Monticello

Alvy Early, longtime women's basketball and softball coach at Arkansas-Monticello, has been given additional duties as athletics director in a major realignment of the school's athletics department.

Early, who has been associated with Arkansas-Monticello as a player and coach for a total of 21 years, replaces Lawrence Smithmier, who was reassigned to classroom teaching. Smithmier, who had been AD and head men's basketball coach since 1990, decided to relinquish his athletics duties after heart surgery last summer.

Early was a three-sport letterwinner for the Boll Weevils in the mid-1960s and was named head women's basketball coach in 1979. In 17 seasons, Early guided the women's team to 359 wins and 171 losses for a winning percentage of .677.

Bill Ball, assistant men's basketball coach, was named interim head basketball coach. Also in the reorganization, Carl Preston, an assistant football coach at Arkansas-Monticello since 1985, was promoted to head football coach, replacing Tommy Barnes, who resigned.


GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

William Wiebenga announced his resignation as president of Central (Iowa), effective immediately. Thomas Iverson, mathematics professor, was appointed interim president. Wiebenga, who has been president since 1990, said he wants to pursue other professional interests. Iverson has been a member of the Central faculty since 1976 and chair of the natural science division since 1985.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Marcella Zalot, assistant athletics director at Harvard for the past four years, hired as associate AD at Colby. She also will be senior woman administrator in charge of budget management. Zalot also has served as an eligibility representative at the NCAA national office.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Kris Doorey named assistant athletics director/sports information director at Curry. He replaces Adam Polgreen, who became assistant SID at Northeastern. Doorey had been assistant director of athletics media relations at Stony Brook since his graduation in May.

COACHES

Baseball--Sean Matkowski promoted to head coach at Widener, replacing Bill Zwaan, who was named head football coach at the school. Zwaan was head baseball coach from 1993 to 1996. Matkowski was an assistant coach for Zwaan and also served as admissions counselor at the university. As an undergraduate at Widener, Matkowski was a four-year varsity baseball letterwinner and cocaptain as a junior and senior.

Baseball assistants--Matt Palisin hired as an assistant coach at Penn State-Behrend. Palisin was a member of the Penn State-Behrend baseball team and spent three seasons in professional baseball. He was pitching coach at Gannon last year ... Steve Foster, a veteran of eight seasons of professional baseball with the Cincinnati Reds organization, named assistant coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Foster will work primarily with the pitching staff. He most recently was area scouting supervisor for the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Men's and women's cross country--Shawn Flanagan, head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Texas-San Antonio since 1985, hired as assistant cross country and track coach at Texas. Flanagan began as an assistant at Texas-San Antonio in 1981. During his tenure there, he was named cross country coach of the year five times and led his teams to several conference championships.

Field hockey--Yale announced the resignation of head coach Carla Hesler. Hesler, who completed her eighth season last fall, compiled a 54-71-3 record with the Bulldogs. She will remain at Yale in an administrative position in the athletics department. Before going to Yale, Hesler was head coach of field hockey and women's lacrosse at Colgate.

Football--James Michael "Mick" Caba hired at William Penn. Caba spent the past four years rebuilding the Magoffin County (Kentucky) football program ... Assistant coach Phil Culicerto appointed head coach at Hampden-Sydney, succeeding Joe Bush, who stepped down after the 1996 season to concentrate on his duties as athletics director. Culicerto spent the past 11 seasons as offensive backs and receivers coach at Hampden-Sydney. He also has been head baseball coach for the past two years ... Bill Zwaan, defensive coordinator at Widener since 1992, promoted to head coach. Zwaan also was head baseball coach from 1993 to 1996 ... Albion graduate Craig Rundle has returned to his alma mater as head football coach, replacing Pete Schmidt, who became assistant head coach at Indiana. Rundle has been head coach at Colorado College since 1990 and coached at St. Mary's (California) before that ... Mike Dunbar, offensive coordinator at Toledo for the past five years, appointed head coach at Northern Iowa. Dunbar joined the Toledo staff in 1992 and was promoted to assistant head coach after the 1994 season. He was head coach at Central Washington for six seasons before moving to Toledo.

Football assistants--Tulane announced three additions to its staff: Rick Smith, defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach at Kentucky, named to the same positions at Tulane; Steve Davis, defensive coordinator at Troy State, hired as linebackers coach; and Ron West, offensive line coach at Baylor, named offensive line coach ... Larry Coyer and Bill McGovern hired at Pittsburgh. Coyer, defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at Iowa State for the past two years, will be defensive coordinator. McGovern, an assistant coach at Boston College for the past three seasons, will handle the defensive secondary ... Newberry assistant coaches Brent Bagwell and Preston Poag resigned. Bagwell had been offensive line coach for the past two seasons. Poag was with the Indians for three seasons as offensive coordinator, quarterbacks coach and receivers coach ... Charles Thomas and Anthony Brown named to the staff at Arkansas-Monticello. Thomas was principal, athletics director and head football coach at Afton (Ohio) High School. He also has coached at Henderson State and Tennessee. Brown has been an assistant football coach at the high-school level in Texas and has been an assistant strength coach at Mississippi State.

San Jose State hired five assistant coaches: Wally Gaskins, running backs coach at Rutgers last season, named assistant head coach and running backs coach; Steve Hagen, head coach at Wartburg in 1996, quarterbacks coach; Matt Lubick, defensive backs coach at Cal State Northridge in 1996, wide receivers coach; Thurmond Moore, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach for the London Monarchs of the World League of American Football in 1996, defensive line coach; and Todd Throckmorton, assistant coach at Missouri Western State for the past seven seasons, inside linebackers coach ... Tom Freeman, an assistant coach at Purdue for the past five years, named offensive line coach at Pittsburgh. Freeman also coached at Arizona State from 1984 to 1991.

Men's and women's golf--Bill Eberz hired as golf coach at Newberry. Eberz has been an English teacher and high-school administrator in Pennsylvania for the past 35 years. He also has coached several sports ... Kathy Niepagen named women's golf coach at Illinois Wesleyan, replacing Denise Stone, who moved to Iowa. Stone coached Illinois Wesleyan in its first season of varsity women's golf last fall. Niepagen has worked at Highland Park Golf Course in Bloomington, Illinois, for eight years and also at Inverrary Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Men's and women's soccer--Scott Baker, a member of Rowan's 1990 Division III championship soccer team, hired as head women's coach at Jersey City State. Baker, who is completing work on a master's degree at Rowan, has coached at the high-school level ... Chris Parsons, formerly at Champlain, hired as head men's coach at Vassar.

Men's and women's soccer assistants--George Kiefer and John Deeley named assistant men's coaches at Connecticut. Kiefer has been an assistant men's soccer coach at his alma mater, Southern Connecticut State, for the past three years. Deeley, also a Southern Connecticut State alumnus, has been an assistant coach there for the past eight seasons. Both men coached under new Connecticut head coach Ray Reid while he was head coach at Southern Connecticut State ... Julie Reule hired as assistant women's coach at Bowling Green. She joins a program that will begin its first season of intercollegiate competition next fall. Reule was an assistant coach at James Madison in 1995 and has coached at the high-school level.

Women's softball assistant--Rose Garces named assistant coach at UC Davis, succeeding Shawn Schwitters, who resigned. Garces has coached at the high-school level and was a four-year starter on the softball team at Cal State Fullerton.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Josh Curtiss, 1996 Division III coach of the year, named Fresno State's head diving coach, succeeding Warren Maxwell, who resigned to become head diving coach at a private academy in New Mexico. Curtiss was named coach of the year while at UC San Diego, where he coached three divers to national titles.

Men's and women's tennis--St. Catherine selected Eric Stacey as its new head coach. Stacey, a four-year letterwinner in tennis at Gustavus Adolphus, has been instructing tennis since 1992 and has been an assistant coach at his alma mater and at Virginia ... Pepperdine announced the retirement of head men's coach Glenn Bassett. Bassett, who also served as head coach at UCLA for 27 seasons (from 1967 to 1993), compiled a career record of 614-99-2. He was a volunteer coach at Pepperdine in 1994 and 1995 and assumed the head coaching position last year. Pepperdine was 22-7 during the 1996 season ... Wheaton (Illinois) appointed Chris Jones as head men's tennis coach, succeeding Russ Polender, who coached Wheaton during the past two seasons. Jones, a 1996 Wheaton graduate, played four years for the school's men's tennis team.

Men's and women's track and field --Shawn Flanagan, head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Texas-San Antonio since 1985, hired as assistant cross country and track coach at Texas. Flanagan began as an assistant at Texas-San Antonio in 1981. During his tenure there, he was named cross country coach of the year five times and led his teams to several conference championships.

Men's and women's track and field assistants--Kim Skistad and Sarah Becher appointed assistants at St. Catherine. Skistad will coach sprints and jumps and Becher will be in charge of the throwing programs. Becher was hired jointly with Macalester, where she also will coaching the throwing programs ... Robert Dewar named to coach sprints and short relays at UC Davis. He also will be director of recruiting. Dewar has been an assistant coach for Cal State Stanislaus.

STAFF

Academic advisor--Randy Calwell, an athletics academic advisor at San Jose State, hired for the same position at Weber State.

Sports information director--Kris Doorey named assistant athletics director/sports information director at Curry. He replaces Adam Polgreen, who became assistant SID at Northeastern. Doorey had been assistant director of athletics media relations at Stony Brook since his graduation in May.

CONFERENCES

Conference USA announced a corporate partnership with the Phillips 66 Company, which will serve as the title sponsor of the conference's men's basketball championship for three years. The agreement begins with the 1997 tournament.

The New England Collegiate Conference announced the resignation of Jeff Bernstein as media relations director. Bernstein, the league's first media relations director, held the position for 16 months.

Nick Zibelli named supervisor of baseball officials in New England for the Eastern College Athletic Conference. Zibelli has served as umpire-in-chief of the Cape Cod Baseball League for the past three seasons.

ASSOCIATION

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and SoftSport, Inc., have signed an agreement to enhance the NSCAA's coaching education program with SoftSport computer-match-analysis technology. The agreement allows the NSCAA long-term licensing of the Second Look for Soccer software that analyzes the full 90 minutes of a soccer match and provides detailed reports on team performance and tactics, individual player performance, and the overall game.

The NSCAA also announced an extension of its contract with Umbro, including continuation of the NSCAA/Umbro Select college soccer rankings. The contract also includes establishment of the NSCAA/
Umbro College Soccer Player of the Year awards.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced several award winners: Theodore Barclay, women's soccer coach and associate professor of physical education at Denison, given the Bill Jeffrey Award for outstanding service and/or achievement in collegiate soccer; David Masur, St. John's (New York), Division I men's coach of the year; Petar Draksin, Grand Canyon, Division II men's coach of the year; and John O'Connor, Chicago, Division III men's coach of the year.

DEATHS

Bruce Swierczewski, a two-time Mid-American Conference wrestling champion for Northern Illinois, died January 6 of cancer. He was 34. Swierczewski represented Northern Illinois in 1984 and 1985 in the NCAA Division I championships. He won the MAC 142-pound championships those years and finished his career with a 93-44-2-14 won-lost-draw-pin record. He was wrestling coach at Blue Island Eisenhower High School in Illinois.

Stan Bates, longtime director of athletics at Washington State and a former commissioner of the Western Athletic Conference, died November 11 in Pullman, Washington, where he had retired. He was 86. Bates was instrumental in the establishment and development of the Fiesta and Holiday Bowls. He was president of the Washington State High School Principals Association and received many honors resulting from his participation in athletics and work in public school teaching and coaching. He was a member of the Washington State hall of fame and athletics hall of fame. He served on several NCAA committees.
