Tulane president announces retirement

Eamon Kelly, president at Tulane since 1981, announced his retirement, effective in June 1998.

Kelly joined the Tulane administration in 1979 as executive vice-president. In 1980, he was appointed interim president and was chosen as the university's 13th president in 1981.

When he retires, Kelly will have been president of a single institution longer than any other member of the American Association of Universities, an association of the 60 major research universities in the United States and Canada.

Kelly is a professor in the departments of economics, Latin American studies, and international health and development, and is a member of the graduate faculty at Tulane.

Kelly is a former member of the NCAA Presidents Commission. He is a member of the National Science Board and the National Security Education Board and has received awards from the Louisiana Human Rights Campaign and the Anti-Defamation League.

Dubois has been provost, vice-chancellor for academic affairs and professor of political science at North Carolina-Charlotte ... Leo Higdon Jr., professor and dean of the graduate school of business administration at Virginia, appointed president at Babson, effective July 1 ... Marie McDemmond selected as president of Norfolk State, effective July 1. McDemmond is vice-president for finance and chief operating officer at Florida Atlantic ... Columbia (South Carolina) president Peter Mitchell hired as president at Albion, effective July 1 ... Southern Colorado promoted Leslie Wong to interim president. Wong had been provost ... Charles Knapp, president at Georgia, appointed president of Aspen Institute, effective July 1. Knapp is an NCAA Presidents Commission member ... DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Ed Wolfarth named AD at Old Westbury. Wolfarth was acting AD in 1995-96 and is the head men's and women's tennis coach ... Robert Piper, a Grambling alumnus who has served in various administrative posts at the school, appointed AD ... Mike Sumpter, AD at Colorado Christian, hired as athletics department business manager at Air Force.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Al Kempfert, executive director of the Grizzly Athletic Association at Montana since 1977, accepted the newly created position of assistant AD for development. Kempfert will oversee the school's new Events Center and corporate sponsorships.

COACHES

Men's and women's cross country--Harry Lehwald named men's and women's cross country coach at Anderson (South Carolina). Lehwald has coached since 1975, including stints at McNeese State, Missouri, Arkansas and Kansas.

Football--Mike Kelly named head coach at Valdosta State. He was offensive coordinator for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League the past five years ... Widener head coach Bill Cubit hired as offensive coordinator at Western Michigan. Cubit compiled a record of 34-18-1 since inheriting a 3-7 team in 1992. The Pioneers participated in the NCAA Division III tournaments in1994 and 1995 ... Doug Williams, MVP of the 1988 Super Bowl, hired as head coach at Morehouse. Williams, a Grambling alumnus, had been a National Football League scout with the Jacksonville Jaguars. He played for the Washington Redskins in the Super Bowl ... Southern Utah announced the resignation of head coach Rich Ellerson ... Jim Marshall, a 1968 graduate of Tennessee-Martin, appointed head coach at his alma mater. Marshall was offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator at Memphis the past two years ... Daryl Dickey, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach at Georgia Southern the past two years, named head coach at Presbyterian.

Football assistants--Bob Junko, a Pittsburgh assistant coach during the 1980s, will return to the school as a defensive line coach. Junko has been defensive coordinator at Kent the past two years.

J. D. Brookhart hired as tight ends coach at Pittsburgh. He was a coaching assistant with the Denver Broncos the past two years ... Southern Methodist announced its football staff: Eric Schumann, defensive coordinator at East Tennessee State since 1992, defensive coordinator; Derek Dooley, graduate assistant at Georgia last season, wide receivers; Troy Douglas, running backs coach at UTEP in 1996, running backs; Jerry Gray, in his third year at Southern Methodist, defensive backs; Steve Malin, entering his fourth year at Southern Methodist, linebackers; David McKnight, offensive coordinator at East Tennessee State since 1992, tight ends; David Napert, an assistant coach at East Tennessee State since 1992, defensive line; and Randy Williams, an assistant at East Tennessee State since 1994, offensive line.

Oregon State announced the hiring of several assistant coaches: Greg Newhouse, defensive coordinator and secondary coach; Paul Chryst, offensive coordinator and quarterback coach; Jim Gilstrap, offensive line; Ron Simonson, running backs and recruiting coordinator; Mike Johnson, wide receivers; Bruce Read, special teams and tight ends; Dan Langsdorf, graduate assistant; Michael Gray, defensive line; Mark Banker, secondary; and James West, linebackers. The coordinators all were assistants with the San Antonio Riders of the World League of American Football in 1991-92 with new head coach Mike Riley. Robert Jackson, assistant head coach and receivers head coach last season at Oregon State, appointed to newly created position of coordinator of football operations ... Harold Nichols, a 1989 graduate of Presbyterian, named recruiting coordinator and offensive assistant coach at his alma mater. Nichols was recruiting coordinator and running backs coach at Georgia Southern last season ... Bobby Jack Wright promoted to defensive coordinator at Texas, succeeding Gary Darnell, who became head coach at Western Michigan. Wright has been a member of the Texas staff for 11 years in various coaching roles.

Men's lacrosse assistants--Brian Doyle hired as assistant men's coach at Goucher. Doyle was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Roanoke, the past year ... Marc Cullinan and Tim Newby appointed at Widener. Cullinan, an assistant coach at Western New England, will serve as a part-time coach. Newby, a 1996 Widener graduate and member of the men's lacrosse team, will be a graduate assistant coach.

Men's and women's soccer--Wendy Logan hired as the first varsity women's soccer coach at Ohio, which will field its first women's soccer team next fall. Logan was an assistant coach at Connecticut the past five seasons ... Bob Warming named head men's coach at Saint Louis. Warming built Creighton's men's team into a national power and the dominant program in the Missouri Valley Conference after starting the Bluejays' program from scratch in 1990.

Women's softball--Sharron Backus, who led UCLA to an 847-167-3 record and nine national titles in 21 years, retired. Sue Enquist, cohead coach the past eight years, becomes the lone head coach at UCLA ... Michele Hawkins, an assistant coach at Michigan State from 1994 to 1996, named head coach at Chicago. Hawkins enjoyed an outstanding playing career as a pitcher at Northwestern, graduating in 1994. She replaces Ruth Kmak, who guided the Maroons to a 13-18 mark last year in her only season.

Men's and women's swimming assistant--Gary Mann named assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Goucher. Mann, who was a member of the Frostburg State swim team, has been coaching age-group teams in Maryland.

STAFF

Business manager--Air Force appointed Mike Sumpter as business manager of the athletics department. Sumpter was athletics director at Colorado Christian.

Development director--Bruce Rosengrant, development officer at Lycoming, named director of development for athletics at North Carolina-Greensboro.

Marketing and promotions--Brian Estridge, director of external operations at Appalachian State the past five years, selected as director of marketing and promotions at Miami (Ohio). Estridge replaces Eric Preston, who resigned.

Athletic trainer--Greg Collins, head athletic trainer at Richmond the past four years, named head athletic trainer at Wake Forest. Collins had been a member of the Richmond staff since 1989.

CONFERENCES

Ralph McFillen named commissioner of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, succeeding Ken Jones, who is retiring June 30 after 15 years as the conference's first full-time commissioner. McFillen, who will begin work with Jones in February, has been executive director of the American Saddlebred Special Commission in Atlanta since 1995. Before that, he served as commissioner of the Metro Conference from 1987 to 1995.

ASSOCIATIONS

Mike Palisi selected as director of corporate development for the National Football Foundation. Palisi had been president of Athletic Advantage, where he consulted on marketing and fund-raising strategies. He also has been assistant AD for external affairs/development at Maine.


NOTABLES

Finalists for the Intercollegiate Golf Awards have been announced. Finalists for the Marilynn Smith Award for women's golfers are Heather Bowie, Texas; Mhari McKay, Stanford; Laura Philo, Wake Forest; and Doodie Mazzuca, Washington. Finalists for the Dave Williams Award for men's golfers are Scott Johnson, Arizona State; Marcus Jones, Texas; Leif Westerberg, Oklahoma State; and Brian Hull, Southern California.

John Arce, strength and conditioning coach at Purdue, chosen by his colleagues as 1997 NSCA Strength and Conditioning Professional of the Year for the Big Ten Conference. Each conference may select a winner from whom the national winner will be selected in June.

Rice head football coach Ken Hatfield elected to the Board of Trustees of the American Football Coaches Association. Hatfield replaces outgoing AFCA president Fisher DeBerry of Air Force.

The AFCA capped its 75th anniversary celebration by presenting its most prestigious award -- GTE Coach of the Year -- to four outstanding coaches. Winners are Bruce Snyder, Arizona State, Division I-A; Ray Tellier, Columbia, Division I-AA; Joe Glenn, Northern Colorado, Division II; and Larry Kehres, Mount Union, Division III. As GTE coaches of the year, Tellier, Glenn and Kehres will serve as assistant coaches at the 1997 Hula Bowl. Snyder has been invited to serve as head coach in the 1998 Hula Bowl. The 1997 game marks the beginning of a multi-year agreement in which the AFCA's GTE Coach of the Year winners coach in the Hula Bowl.


DEATHS

Herb Lauffer, a member of the Penn State-Behrend athletics department for 29 years and athletics director the past 16 years, died January 10 after undergoing heart surgery. Lauffer, 55, was head men's soccer coach for 23 years, recording 131 victories, which makes him the all-time winningest soccer coach in the school's history. He also served as men's tennis coach for a time. Lauffer initiated the Penn State-Behrend Athletics Hall of Fame, expanded the sports program from eight to 12 sports and guided the athletics program from NAIA junior college status to NCAA Division III status.
