The NCAA News - News and Features

January 13, 1997

Convention facts

When: January 11-15.

Where: Nashville, Tennessee. The headquarters hotel is the Opryland Hotel. Some delegates will be housed at the AmeriSuites across from the Opryland complex.

End of an era: Barring an unexpected turn of events, this will be the final NCAA Convention at which legislation is considered by the full membership. At future Conventions, Division I delegates will use the occasion for discussion and celebratory purposes; Divisions II and III will continue with their traditional one-institution/one-vote, legislative events.

Projected attendance: Preregistration figures are almost identical to those for the 1996 Convention, which featured record attendance of 2,663. Last year, however, a large number of preregistered delegates were unable to attend because of a major snowstorm on the East Coast, so it is likely that the attendance standard will be broken at this Convention.

Number of proposals: A total of 149 proposals and 14 amendments-to-amendments appear in the Official Notice. At the 1996 Convention, the Official Notice contained 133 proposals and 30 amendments-to-amendments.

Next year: The 1998 NCAA Convention will be conducted in Atlanta. The co-headquarter facilities will be the Marriott Marquis and the Hyatt Regency Hotels.
