Schipper retires after 36 seasons at Central

Ron Schipper, head football coach at Central (Iowa) since 1961, announced his retirement, effective immediately.

Schipper guided the Dutch to the winningest record in college football over the past 36 years, compiling a record of 287-66-3. His .810 winning percentage gives him the highest percentage among coaches with 250 or more victories.

From 1965 to 1993, Schipper also was Central's athletics director. He also was a leader in the development of women's athletics.

Schipper was president of the American Football Coaches Association in 1994 and was a member of the NCAA Division III Football Committee for six years, including one year as chair. He also served six years on the NCAA Football Television Committee, the NCAA Football Rules Committee and chaired the AFCA's College Division all-America selection committee.

A graduate of Hope, Schipper lettered in football, baseball and tennis.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Frederick Hutchinson, president at Maine, announced his retirement, effective June 30, 1997 ... William Jenkins, interim chancellor at LSU, named chancellor ... Presbyterian announced the retirement of President Kenneth Orr, effective in June 1997 ... Julius Scott Jr., interim president at Albany State (Georgia), named president at Wiley.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Larry Holstad, former athlete and alumnus at Winona State, hired as athletics director there. He replaces Gary Evans, vice-president for university relations and development, who has been serving as acting AD since last spring. For the past 20 years, Holstad has been employed by Forest City, Iowa, Community Schools as a teacher, coach and administrator ... Pete Liske hired at Toledo. Liske was AD at Idaho for four years before joining the Toledo staff. From 1985 to 1992, he was an associate AD at Washington, in charge of development, marketing and promotions ... Colorado Christian appointed Dave Foster as interim AD, succeeding Mike Sumpter, who has taken a position at Air Force.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Laura Rush promoted to full-time assistant AD and senior woman administrator at Colorado Christian. Rush was director of soccer and head women's soccer coach ... John Born, head men's soccer coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering, selected for the newly created position of assistant AD. Born will retain his coaching duties.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Laura Rush named senior woman administrator and assistant AD at Colorado Christian.

COACHES

Baseball--Tom Holliday, an assistant coach at Oklahoma State for 19 years, promoted to head coach. Holliday was Gary Ward's assistant for the entire 19 years he coached at Oklahoma State and also played for Ward at Yavapai Junior College. Ward retired in October.

Men's basketball--Paul Marienthal named head coach at Bard.

Men's basketball assistants--Colby-Sawyer appointed Tom Brayshaw and Josh Pincoske assistant coaches. Pincoske is a senior at Colby-Sawyer and is entering his second season with the men's basketball program. He was an intern the past summer with the New Hampshire Thunder Loons of the United States Basketball League. Brayshaw was on the basketball team at Cornell before his graduation in 1993 ... Rob Orellana hired as an assistant coach at St. Francis (New York). Orellana has coached at UNLV and UC Irvine. He most recently coached in Venezuela ... Andy Chiles and Warren Butler hired as assistant coaches at Barry. Chiles was a high-school head coach in Florida. Butler was head coach at Miami Dade Kendall Community College.

Women's basketball--Michele Sternes named head coach at Bard ... Assistant coach Rosina Pearson named interim head coach at Bethune-Cookman, succeeding Alvin Wyatt, who was named head football coach. Wyatt had been head women's basketball coach since 1978. Pearson was an assistant under Wyatt for 10 seasons and has coached the volleyball team for the past 10 years.

Women's basketball assistants--John Billings named an assistant coach at Colby-Sawyer after spending two seasons as a student assistant for the team. He graduated from Colby-Sawyer in May ... Former Guilford standout Paul Ferrell and Amanda Hyatt named assistant coaches at Guilford. Ferrell returns to his alma mater for his first coaching experience. He graduated in 1994. Hyatt was a member of the North Carolina-Asheville women's basketball team and is a graduate student at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Barb Gering named an assistant coach at Colby-Sawyer, where she completed a notable playing career last season ... Western Kentucky standout Trina Wilson hired as a full-time assistant at Delaware. Wilson was in her first season as women's basketball administrative assistant at her alma mater. She played in Turkey and France after her career at Western Kentucky and worked for the Women's Sports Foundation.

Football--Wyoming head coach Joe Tiller hired at Purdue. Tiller was 39-29-1 in six seasons at Wyoming. He was an assistant head coach, defensive coordinator and defensive line coach at Purdue from 1983 through 1986 ... Gene Stallings, Alabama head coach the past seven seasons, resigned. Stallings compiled a 69-15-1 record and an .810 winning percentage, second only to his mentor, Bear Bryant, in the 102-year history of the Alabama football program ... Johnny Majors resigned as head coach at Pittsburgh. Majors had a 184-137-10 record in 28 seasons as a college head coach: five at Iowa State, eight at Pittsburgh and 16 at his alma mater, Tennessee. Majors' record at Pittsburgh since 1993, his second stint at the school, was 11-32 ... Maryland released head coach Mark Duffner. Duffner was 20-35 in five seasons at Maryland. He coached at Holy Cross before joining the Maryland staff ... Defensive and special teams coordinator Michael Kolakowski promoted to head coach at California (Pennsylvania), succeeding Kevin Donley, who announced his resignation. Before joining the California staff, Kolakowski was a defensive secondary coach/special teams coordinator at Ohio. Donley joined the California staff in 1993 and will remain at the university until June 1997 ... Bethune-Cookman assistant head coach Alvin Wyatt promoted to head coach, replacing Jack "Cy" McClairen. Wyatt has served on the Bethune-Cookman athletics staff for 20 years and was a member of the football staff from 1977 to 1990. He returned as defensive coordinator and assistant head coach in 1994. Since 1978, Wyatt has been head women's basketball coach ... Don McLeary has been dismissed as head coach at Tennessee-Martin. McLeary served as head coach for 11 seasons and compiled a 50-73 record, including a 1-10 record in 1996.

Football assistants--Georgia Southern announced the hiring of six assistant coaches: Mike Sewak, offensive coordinator at Ohio, named offensive coordinator; Rusty Russell, inside linebackers coach at Youngstown State, named defensive coordinator; Tracy Ham and Giff Smith, former Georgia Southern players, and Ray Gregory, offensive coordinator at Southern Utah, named as assistants. John Pate rejoins the Georgia Southern staff where he was an assistant from 1985 to 1989.

Women's gymnastics--Pat Sherrick, assistant women's gymnastics coach at Wisconsin-Oshkosh the past two seasons, promoted to head coach. Sherrick replaces Paul Scardina, who resigned to become assistant women's gymnastics coach at Yale after leading the Wisconsin-Oshkosh team since the 1993-94 season. Sherrick competed for the men's gymnastics team at Wisconsin-Oshkosh during the 1992-93 season, the last year of the team's intercollegiate competition at the school. This is his first head coaching assignment.

Men's ice hockey--Don Roberts, head coach at Gustavus Adolphus the past 33 years and the winningest ice hockey coach in NCAA Division III history with a record of 516-278-25, announced his retirement, effective at the end of this academic year. Roberts is a tenured full professor in health and exercise science and will end his teaching career teaching part time for the 1997-98 academic year. When Roberts was named head hockey coach in 1964, he had neither played nor coached hockey before but had coached football, wrestling and baseball at Gustavus since 1959.

Men's and women's soccer--Gary Evans named director of soccer and head women's soccer coach at Colorado Christian. Evans replaces Laura Rush, who became assistant athletics director ... Saint Louis announced the resignation of Joe Clarke as head men's soccer coach. Clarke concluded his 14-year career at Saint Louis with a 5-10-3 record this past season. Clarke's career record is 205-74-30 ... Bob Martin, head men's coach at St. Mary's (California) the past 14 seasons, resigned. He will be replaced by Mark Talan, a former St. Mary's player and assistant coach. Martin was 92-154-28 in 14 years as head coach ... Scott Martin resigned as head women's coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Martin concluded his fifth season at Wisconsin-Eau Claire with a 10-8-1 record and an overall record of 61-36-4 ... Bobby Kramig, head men's soccer coach at Miami (Ohio), given additional duties as head coach of the women's team, which gained varsity status this fall. Kramig also will be director of soccer operations for both teams. He has been head coach of the men's team for 14 years.

Men's tennis--Cincinnati's Dave Power resigned after nine years as head coach. Power has been a teaching professional in the Cincinnati area the past 26 years.

STAFF

Public relations director--Craig Cotton, who has served as sports information director at Delaware State the past four years, appointed acting director of public relations.

Soccer operations director--Miami (Ohio) named Bobby Kramig as director of soccer operations. Kramig, who has been head coach of the men's soccer team at Miami for 14 years, will serve as director of operations for both the men's and women's teams and will take on duties as head coach of the new women's team.

Sports information director--Dennis Jones, sports information assistant at Delaware State, appointed acting SID. He succeeds Craig Cotton, who was named acting director of public relations at the school. Jones has been news director for WDOV/WDSD/WSRV radio the past 15 years. He joined the Delaware State sports information staff as a part-time assistant in 1988 ... Paul Erickson appointed SID at Wisconsin-Platteville. Erickson had been SID at Beloit since 1989.

Sports information assistant--Michele Dubert, formerly a sports information assistant at Canisius, named assistant SID at Cincinnati. Dubert had served as assistant SID at Canisius the past two years.

CONFERENCE

Rod Wyatt named director of compliance services for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. Wyatt had served as assistant AD for compliance at North Carolina-Greensboro from 1993 to 1994 before being named special assistant to the athletics director.

ASSOCIATION

USA Baseball named Daniel F. O'Brien Sr. as its new executive director/CEO. O'Brien succeeds Richard Case, USA Baseball's first executive director who had served in the position since 1990. O'Brien is a seasoned baseball administrator who began his professional baseball career in 1955. He had been director of baseball operations with Major League Baseball's Arizona Fall League since 1994.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

Defiance and St. Mary's (Indiana) have been awarded conditional membership in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association. They will join seven Michigan colleges in making up the Division III conference, which offers 18 sports for men and women. Neither of the two schools currently are affiliated with a conference.

CORRECTION

The official results of the Division III Women's Cross Country Championships in the November 25 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly described St. Olaf's place finish. St. Olaf finished sixth, tied with Loras with 230 points.
