Wisconsin-Oshkosh wins women's event by 51 points

Entering the 1996 Division III Women's Cross Country Championships, Wisconsin-Oshkosh was labeled as the team to beat.

Possessing an abundance of talent and experience, the Titans were ranked No. 1 nationally in the coaches' top-25 poll.

On November 16, Wisconsin-Oshkosh proved worthy of the ranking, dominating the field to win the championship at Augustana (Illinois).

Turena Johnson of Luther won the individual crown. Johnson, who finished with a time of 17 minutes, 40 seconds, is the first Luther runner to win the individual crown. Johnson's time was 12 seconds better than runner-up Cheri Lichtensteiger of Carroll (Wisconsin).

St. Thomas (Minnesota) placed second, 51 points behind the Titans. The runner-up showing is the fourth for St. Thomas (Minnesota), but first since 1988.

The College of New Jersey, Calvin and Williams rounded out the top five, registering 150, 157 and 198 points, respectively.

Four-time defending champion Cortland State placed eighth with 250 points.
