1. Acting for the Council, the Administrative Committee:

a. Appointed Michael J. Kovalchik, director of athletics, Hillsdale College, to the Interpretations Committee, replacing Robert Evers, no longer at New Mexico Highlands University.

b. Appointed Michael Johnson, track and field coach, University of Washington, to the Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee, replacing Marshall Bell, resigned.

c. Appointed R. Daniel Beebe, commissioner, Ohio Valley Conference, to the Division I-AA Football Committee, replacing Michael D. Strickland, no longer at a Division I-AA institution.

d. Approved a request for a waiver per Bylaw 14.8.1.2-(b) [one-year residence requirement for transfer student-athletes] from the University of Memphis to permit a basketball student-athlete to participate during the 1996-97 season, inasmuch as the institution from which he transferred did not follow correct certification procedures and inadvertently rendered him ineligible.

e. Approved a request for an incidental-expense waiver to permit Pennsylvania State University to pay travel expenses for the mother of a student-athlete who was injured during an out-of-season practice and required surgery.

f. Denied a request for an incidental-expense waiver to permit Southern Methodist University to pay for tickets to theater performances that are a requirement for a theater class in which several student-athletes are enrolled; and noted that the special assistance fund for student-athletes that is administered by the conferences should cover this expense.
