Oklahoma State baseball coach retires

Oklahoma State's Gary Ward, the architect of one of the most successful college baseball programs in the country, has announced his retirement, effective immediately.

During Ward's 19-year tenure at Oklahoma State, the Cowboys won 16 straight Big Eight Conference titles and nine NCAA regional titles. They appeared 10 times in the College World Series.

Ward finished the 1996 season as the second most-victorious coach in the country with a .759 winning percentage. His teams at Oklahoma State were 953-313.

Ward joined Oklahoma State in 1977 after seven seasons at Yavapai Junior College in Prescott, Arizona, where he coached teams to two national junior college championships. Before that, Ward coached basketball and baseball at New Mexico State and at the high-school level.

Ward's teams won 45 or more games in all but three seasons and won 75 percent of their games in 12 of the past 17 seasons.


GENERAL

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Gerald Sherratt, president of Southern Utah, announced his retirement, effective June 30, 1997 ... Anita Pampusch, president of St. Catherine, selected as president of the Bush Foundation, effective in July 1997 ... Robert Ackerman, president of Wesleyan (Georgia), announced his retirement, effective June 1997.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Peter Carlon, a 15-year veteran of the Texas-Arlington athletics department, named athletics director there. Carlon has served two stints as AD, in 1991-92 and since May as interim director. He also has been associate director of athletics, sports information director, assistant AD and head athletic trainer since joining the Texas-Arlington staff in 1981 ... Steve Pederson hired at Pittsburgh. Pederson has been associate AD and director of football operations at Nebraska since 1994 ... Danny Morrison, the athletics director who led Wofford from the NAIA to NCAA and Southern Conference membership, promoted to senior vice-president at the school. He will oversee most campus support functions, effective January 1. Morrison was an assistant basketball coach at Elon before joining the Wofford staff in 1985.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Nancy Cross promoted to assistant athletics director at Purdue. Cross will retain her duties as director of the John Purdue Club and assume oversight responsibilities for the men's and women's golf teams. Cross joined the Purdue staff in 1979 as head field hockey coach and assistant women's basketball coach ... Coastal Carolina hired David Blank as assistant AD for development and marketing. Blank has been head basketball coach and athletics fund-raiser at Lock Haven for the past eight years ... South Alabama appointed Pam Young as assistant AD/senior woman administrator. Young has been an academic advisor and program coordinator in the athletics department for the past five years and was interim assistant AD and SWA last year.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Denyse Simmonds hired as senior woman administrator and assistant to the athletics director at Staten Island. Simmonds is a former Staten Island volleyball player and also served a 10-year stint in the Marine Corps. She has been a teacher for the New York Board of Education since 1994 ... Pam Young appointed assistant AD and senior woman administrator at South Alabama. She has been academic advisor and program coordinator in the athletics department for the past five years.

COACHES

Men's basketball--David Blank, head coach at Lock Haven, hired as assistant athletics director for development and marketing at Coastal Carolina. Blank had been head coach and assisted with fund-raising for the past eight years at Lock Haven.

Men's basketball assistants--Rob Canaday hired as assistant coach at Emory & Henry, succeeding Jimmy Allen, who became a limited-earnings coach at Navy. Canaday has been a high-school coach ... Don Evans and Terrance Moorman named volunteer assistant coaches at Bellarmine. Evans has been the color commentator for Bellarmine basketball on TKR Cable during the past two seasons and has coached at Minnesota and Idaho State. Moorman has been a high-school coach.

Women's basketball--Janet Cone, head coach at St. Leo since 1994, hired as Samford's first women's basketball coach. Samford will begin play in the sport in 1997-98. Cone also has been head coach at Western Carolina and Mars Hill.

Women's basketball assistants--Melissa Pfefferle named assistant coach at St. Anselm. Pfefferle was cocaptain of the women's basketball team during her junior and senior years at New Hampshire and has been a high-school coach ... Tami Baalke and Brooke Svendsen named at Montana State. Baalke is a former assistant at Wisconsin-Milwaukee and a was standout player at Illinois State. Svendsen, a former all-Big Sky Conference selection, was a player at Montana State from 1992 to 1996 ... Cordella Hill and Catherine Sykes selected at Beaver.

Men's and women's golf--Nancy Cross given additional responsibilities as men's and women's golf coach at Purdue. Cross, who was promoted to assistant athletics director, will retain her duties as director of the John Purdue Club.

Men's ice hockey--Kevin McGonagle appointed head coach at Massachusetts-Boston. McGonagle was an assistant at Bowdoin for the past three seasons.

Men's ice hockey assistants--David Flint and Ryan Mailhiot appointed assistant coaches at St. Anselm. Flint, who played four years at North Adams State, will coach defense and goaltending. Mailhiot, a 1996 Merrimack graduate, was captain of the Warriors during his senior year ... Craig Heggs named top assistant coach at Wisconsin-Stevens Point. Heggs was director of hockey operations at the U.S. Ice Sports Complex in St. Louis.

Men's and women's rowing assistants--Jimmy King, Amy Wilton and Matt Russell appointed to the George Washington rowing staff. Wilton, a 1990 George Washington graduate and an assistant last season at Wesleyan (Connecticut), will coach women's novice. King, former head coach at Bucknell, will coach the varsity men's team. Russell, a 1995 George Washington graduate, will coach men's novice.

Women's swimming and diving--David Kintas, head women's swimming coach at Loyala Marymount for the past four years, resigned. Kintas also coached the men's water polo team and club men's swimming team.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistant--James Lymper named assistant men's and women's swimming coach at Beaver.

Men's water polo--David Kintas, head coach at Loyola Marymount for the past four years, resigned. Kintas also was head aquatics coach, which included coaching the women's varsity swimming team and men's club swimming team.

Wrestling assistant--Granit Taropin, a former Soviet national coach, hired as an assistant coach at Harvard. Taropin was head coach of the Dynamo Kiev Wrestling Club and also coached the national teams of India and Great Britain.

STAFF

Academic coordinator--Cindy Anzelmo appointed academic coordinator in the athletics department at Saint Louis. Anzelmo was an athletics counselor at Northern Illinois for the past three years.

Media relations coordinator--Will Hancock selected as coordinator of media relations at Oklahoma State, replacing Mike Strauss, who joined the sports information staff at Utah State. Hancock previously was director of communications and marketing at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference.

Sports information director--Michael Hemmesch named news service/sports information director at St. John's (Minnesota). He replaces Tom Nelson, who became assistant media relations director at St. Cloud State.

Athletic trainer--Steve Yates, head trainer at Wake Forest since 1980, resigned to enter private business. Yates will be director of a sports medicine/physical therapy clinic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Yates was head trainer at VMI for nine years before joining the Wake Forest staff.

CONFERENCES

Will Hancock, director of communications and marketing at the Midwestern Collegiate Conference, named coordinator of media relations at Oklahoma State.

Joyce Legere, assistant athletics director/senior woman administrator at Siena, named vice-chair of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Committee on Athletic Administration.

Rob Carolla, assistant director of communications at Conference USA, hired as assistant director of public relations at the Big East Conference. Carolla was a public relations intern at the Big East during the 1994-95 academic year, then joined Conference USA in July 1995.

Denise Gormley promoted to assistant commissioner at the Northeast Conference. Gormley was assistant for public relations, championships and compliance.

The Sun Belt Conference appointed Mary Herman as media services assistant.

CORRECTION

The school where Danni Innerst plays field hockey was identified incorrectly in a preview of the Division III Field Hockey Championship in the November 4 issue of The NCAA News. Innerst is a member of the Cortland State team.

The Division III field hockey preview also listed incorrect dates of competition. The championship's regionals were November 9-10 and the semifinals, third-place game and final will be November 15-16.

Several previews in the November 4 issue of the News listed incorrect fax-on-demand request numbers for use in obtaining championships results. All of the following request numbers can be accessed by calling 770/399-3060 (passcode 1915). The correct request numbers for the Division II Men's and Women's Cross Country Championships are 5073 for men and 5077 for women. SEMINARS

The seventh annual Men's Soccer Symposium will be presented December 14 in Richmond, Virginia, in conjunction with the Division I Men's Soccer Championship (December 13 and 15). The symposium, sponsored by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) and Umbro, offers three sessions during the day between the championship semifinals and final. Clinicians will be Ron Newman, head coach of the Kansas City Wiz of Major League Soccer; Jerry Yeagley, head men's soccer coach at Indiana; and Ron McEachen, NSCAA associate director of coaching. The third annual NSCAA/Umbro Women's Soccer Symposium will be December 7 in Santa Clara, California, in conjunction with the Division I Women's Soccer Championship (December 6 and 8 at Santa Clara). Clinicians will be Clive Charles, head coach at Portland; Lauren Gregg, assistant coach of the U.S. women's national team; Brandi Chastain, a defender on the U.S. women's Olympic gold medal team; and Dr. Colleen Hacker, former coach and current professor of sports psychology at Pacific Lutheran and U.S. women's Olympic team psychologist. The NSCAA also has scheduled six dates and sites for the 1997 Coaching Academy. The residential programs are designed to meet the needs of the more experienced coach, particularly those who are coaching at the junior college level or higher or coaches who have spent several years coaching at the youth and high-school levels. The American Volleyball Coaches Association announced the national women's players of the week for the week of October 28. Rani Whitson, a 6-0 middle blocker at Auburn, was named in Division I; April Evans of Northern Michigan, Division II; and Jill Harkema, sophomore setter at Calvin, Division III.
