Ramage selected at East Stroudsburg

Lynn Ramage, an assistant coach at Kutztown last season, has been named head men's basketball coach at East Stroudsburg.

record Ramage replaces nine-year coach Sal Mentesana, who resigned after last season to accept the head coaching job at Lehigh.

Ramage has 12 years of collegiate basketball coaching experience, including two years as a head coach. He was the interim head coach at Morgan State in 1994-95 after being an assistant at the school for four years.

Before Morgan State, Ramage was head coach at Chesapeake College, an assistant coach at Davis and Elkins, and an assistant at his alma mater, West Liberty State.

Ramage served in the Air Force after high school. After his discharge, he entered junior college and played two years of basketball. He then attended West Liberty State, where he was a starting forward.


GENERAL

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Winona State announced that Fran Hummel has decided not to accept the position of athletics director at the school. Hummel, who has been AD at Minot State, cited personal reasons for the decision.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Paul Bradshaw, associate commissioner of the Southland Conference, named assistant athletics director for compliance at Baylor. Bradshaw, who had been with the conference office since 1994, worked with compliance, legislative services, legal services and conference championships ... Mike Strauss appointed assistant AD for media relations at Utah State. He was associate media relations director at Oklahoma State for the past eight years.

COACHES

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Sean Rivers named administrative assistant for men's basketball at Marquette. Rivers was an assistant coach last season at Montgomery College ... Jack Mitchell and Jimmy Allen appointed assistant coaches at Navy. Mitchell coached at the high-school level, and Allen was an assistant coach for the past three years at Emory and Henry ... Brian Elve named junior varsity men's coach at Calvin. He has coached at the high-school level ... Van Macon and John Dunne hired as assistant coaches at Adelphi. Macon was an assistant coach at Farmingdale State last season, and Dunne was an assistant at Wilkes last year ... David Olivieri selected as assistant coach at Wentworth Institute ... Jay McMillin named administrative assistant for men's basketball at Boise State. McMillin has coached at Idaho and Elsworth Community College.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Dallas hired Rachelle Leonard as head coach. Leonard coached at Washington (Maryland) ... Becky Hays promoted to head coach at St. Leo. Hays was hired in May as an assistant for that program. Before that, she was an assistant for two years at West Florida.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Robyn Stewart and Steph Spencer named assistant coaches at Idaho State. Stewart was an assistant for two years at Cal State Fullerton. Spencer, a 1995 graduate of Montana State, was an assistant at her alma mater last year ... Former Maine high-school coach Harold Hansen appointed assistant coach at Wentworth Institute. Hansen was a head coach for 12 seasons ... Rod Lee hired at Texas-Pan American after serving as an assistant coach for three years at the University of Ottawa in Canada.

WOMEN'S SQUASH--Lisa Roy, a former standout squash and tennis player at Johns Hopkins, named part-time head women's squash coach at Johns Hopkins. It is Roy's first coaching position. She replaces Dave Bennett, who resigned after one season.

MEN'S TENNIS--Peter Bradshaw named head men's coach at Springfield. Bradshaw was assistant women's coach at the college for the past two years.

MEN'S TENNIS ASSISTANT--Michael Myers selected as graduate assistant men's coach at Springfield. Myers, a Springfield graduate who was named player of the year in the Northeast-10 Conference his senior year, was the tennis professional at Grande Meadows Tennis Club in Longmeadow for five years and worked more recently at Crestview Country Club in Agawam.

STAFF

ACADEMIC ADVISOR--Marsennia Wells named athletics academic advisor at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis. Wells was a graduate academic advisor at Ball State while working on a master's degree in personnel administration.

ARENA MANAGER--Mike Ryan appointed assistant manager of Holt Arena at Idaho State. Ryan most recently was patron services manager at Hartford Civic LEFT.

EXTERNAL ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR--West Texas A&M appointed Bob Beumer as coordinator of external activities. Beumer has been sports information director at Cameron since September 1994.

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTORS--Michael Hemmesch named news service/sports information director at St. John's (Minnesota). Hemmesch replaces Tom Nelson, who became assistant media relations director at St. Cloud State ... Jerry Rashid hired at Stetson. He was SID for the past two years at Wayne State (Nebraska) ... Cameron's Bob Beumer named coordinator of external affairs at West Texas A&M.

SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANT--Diana Doherty named assistant sports information director at New Orleans, effective November 1.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH--Kenny Ball appointed strength and conditioning coach at Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis. Ball has been fitness director at Gold's Gym in Los Angeles for the past 12 years.

ATHLETIC TRAINERS--Vicky Graham and Chris Pecora promoted to interim cohead athletic trainers at Yale.

CONFERENCE

Southland Conference associate commissioner Paul Bradshaw resigned to become assistant athletics director for compliance at Baylor. Bradshaw had been with the conference since 1994, first as assistant commissioner and then as associate commissioner since this summer. He worked with compliance, legislative services, legal services and conference championships.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

The Northeast Conference announced that three Connecticut schools -- Central Connecticut State, Quinnipiac and Sacred Heart -- accepted invitations to join the conference. Central Connecticut State, currently a member of the Mid-Continent Conference and an associate member of the Northeast Conference in football and women's soccer, will join as early as July 1, 1997, but no later than July 1, 1998. Quinnipiac, currently a Division II member in the Northeast-10 Conference, and Sacred Heart, a Division II institution in the New England Collegiate Conference, will complete a two-year transition period required for Division I membership before joining the Northeast Conference.

CORRECTION

The school where Sherrill Sebesta was appointed head field hockey coach and Veronica Froio will be assistant field hockey coach was identified incorrectly in the NCAA Record section of the October 14 issue of The NCAA News. Sebesta and Froio will coach at Regis (Massachusetts).


NOTABLES

The winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of October 12 (week No. 7) are: longest run from scrimmage, 80 yards, Warrick Dunn, Florida State vs. Miami (Florida); longest pass play, 82 yards, Qadry Anderson to Teofilo Riley, Memphis vs. Houston; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 59 yards on two punts, Sean Liss, Florida State vs. Miami (Florida); longest punt return, 99 yards, Courtney Davis, Bowling Green vs. Kent; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Jim Turner, Syracuse vs. Pittsburgh; and longest field goal, 57 yards, Michael Reeder, Texas Christian vs. UTEP. AT&T provides $400 in each of the six categories weekly to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

Jenna Wrobel, a 6-0 outside hitter for Michigan State, named Division I player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Becca Foltz of Cal State Bakersfield was honored in Division II and senior middle blocker Liana Roman of Emory was selected in Division III.

Tulane receiver Derrick Franklin named the sixth member of the College Football Association Good Works Team. His volunteer work has included visiting nursing homes in his hometown of Lake Charles, Louisiana, and in New Orleans, and visiting elementary schools and hospitals.


DEATHS

Dr. William "Bill" Francis, team physician at Tennessee Tech for more than 30 years and a member of the school's Sports Hall of Fame, died October 13 in Cookeville, Tennessee. He was 67. Francis was a member of the Tennessee Tech football team while earning his undergraduate degree in the early 1950s. He became the team doctor for all Tech student-athletes in 1962. The school's sports medicine facility was named after him in 1992.

Bill Tierney, 20, a Fordham football player, died October 12 after collapsing during warmups before a game against Lafayette in New York. The game was postponed. Tierney, a junior and starting defensive back, also was equipment manager for the baseball team.
