NACWAA appoints executive director

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators (NACWAA) has named Jennifer Alley as its executive director.

record Alley has served as an administrator in a variety of roles. Most recently, she was assistant director of athletics at North Carolina-Wilmington, where she oversaw marketing and promotion activities and was executive director of the on-campus athletics fund-raising organization.

Before joining the North Carolina-Wilmington staff, Alley owned and operated a retail business, coached basketball at North Carolina and High Point, coached volleyball at High Point and North Carolina-Greensboro, and was an administrator at High Point.

Alley has served as the NCAA assistant women's basketball officiating coordinator/rules editor and as the coordinator for the National Collegiate Women's Golf Championships.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

William Glasser, president of Southern Vermont, announced his resignation, effective in July 1997 ... Roderic Park, interim chancellor at Colorado, announced his resignation, effective January 8, 1997 ... Roger Webb, president of Northeastern State, named president of Central Oklahoma, effective July 1, 1997.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Maryland-Baltimore County announced the promotion of four administrators within the athletics department: David Langford named associate AD for academic services; Tom Maier, associate AD for development; Gary Wohlstetter, associate AD for recreation and physical education; and Kathy Zerrlaut, associate AD for compliance and senior woman administrator.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Steve Levy and Barry Riley named assistant ADs at Maryland-Baltimore County. Levy will oversee communications and Riley will handle operations ... Vaughn Williams hired at Toledo as assistant AD for business affairs. Williams has been assistant AD for finance at Utah since January 1993 ... St. Mary's (California) selected Elizabeth Reed as assistant AD for academic services and senior woman administrator. Reed takes over for Rosalyn Dunlap-Alli, who accepted a similar position at San Francisco State. Reed was director of the office of student-athlete services at Baylor ... Mary Ann Sunbury, head men's and women's tennis coach at Pfeiffer, promoted to assistant AD for compliance. Pfeiffer head baseball coach Marty Reed also promoted to assistant AD ... Indera Rampal appointed assistant AD and senior woman administrator at New York Tech ... Dawn Turner selected as assistant AD at Radford ... Kelli Wilder promoted to assistant AD for marketing and promotions at California ... Virginia Tech appointed Jahn Ballein assistant AD for football operations.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Kathy Zerrlaut named senior woman administrator at Maryland-Baltimore County, where she also will be associate AD for compliance ... COACHES

BASEBALL--Rocky Ward appointed head coach at New Mexico State, filling the vacancy created when Elliott Avent left for North Carolina State. Ward spent the past two years as hitting and infield coach and recruiting coordinator at Kansas State ... Swarthmore hired Frank Agovino as head coach ... Pfeiffer head baseball coach Marty Reed promoted to assistant AD.

BASEBALL ASSISTANT--Former major leaguer and Miami (Ohio) standout Bill Doran named volunteer assistant coach at his alma mater. Doran played second base for Miami from 1977 to 1979 and played 12 years in the majors with the Houston Astros, Cincinnati Reds and Milwaukee Brewers.

MEN'S BASKETBALL--Rod Wood, a former basketball player at Randolph-Macon, appointed interim head coach at Mary Washington. Wood was a business economics high-school teacher and president of The Fitness Source, Inc., a fitness management and consulting firm in Burke, Virginia ... Milton Barnes, the top assistant coach at Minnesota the past five seasons, named head coach at Eastern Michigan. Barnes previously was at Eastern Michigan from 1983 to 1985 as an assistant men's coach ... Millersville hired David Springer as interim head coach, replacing John Kochan who stepped down after 13 years at the Marauder helm. Springer has been an assistant men's basketball coach at Shippensburg since 1989 ... Northeast Louisiana extended the contract of Mike Vining through the 1999-2000 season.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Doug Wingard selected as assistant coach at Susquehanna. Wingard was a graduate assistant coach at Millersville from 1992 to 1994 and a volunteer assistant during the 1994-95 season ... Matt Mahar named assistant coach at Johnson and Wales ... Will Consovoy appointed men's basketball administrative assistant at Monmouth (New Jersey) ... Van Macon and John Dunne hired at Adelphi ... New York Tech announced the following basketball appointments: Bruce Casagrande, associate head coach; Mike Eisenberg, scouting and game preparation coach; Eric Brooks, recruiting coach; Sterling Nunnally, basketball academic supervisor; Pierre Laurenceau, strength and conditioning coach; and John Smillie, head of basketball promotions.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Michele Biffle named interim head coach at Texas Woman's University, where she completed her collegiate basketball career. She served as a student assistant coach and administrative assistant at Texas Woman's University before becoming a high-school English teacher and softball and cross country coach ... Erin Griffiths hired as interim part-time coach at Plattsburgh State for the 1996-97 season. Griffiths spent last year as an assistant women's basketball coach and head men's tennis coach at Clarkson ... George Mason signed head coach Jim Lewis to a multiyear contract.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Heidi Metzger, an all-American guard and the 1995-96 assistant coach at Elizabethtown, appointed to the newly created position of assistant women's coach ... Shelly Respecki hired at Clarion as a graduate assistant coach. Respecki was starting point guard for the Clarion basketball team in 1991 and 1992 ... King's (Pennsylvania) named a former star player, Maureen McGovern, as assistant coach. McGovern graduated in 1989 and has been a high-school coach the past seven years ... Amy Brown named assistant coach at Tennessee Tech, replacing Harold Smith, who resigned to take a coaching and teaching position at the high-school level. Brown was a four-year starter for the Louisiana Tech squad and spent last season as a student assistant coach there ... Paul Smith, one of the top high-school boys' basketball coaches in Maryland for 20 years, hired as an assistant women's coach at Towson State ... Tananya Walters named assistant coach at Johnson and Wales.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Tony Wichmann named head women's cross country and track coach at DePaul. Since 1991, Wichmann has been head girls' track and field coach and assistant girls' cross country coach at a Northfield, Illinois, high school.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY ASSISTANTS--Craig Anne Lake, a 1995 Princeton graduate and former all-Ivy League outdoor track performer, named assistant coach at George Washington. Lake has been a research assistant at the National Institutes of Health.

MEN'S GOLF--Mark Duzenski appointed head coach at Swarthmore.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Sal Leale appointed head coach at Plymouth State. He was an assistant coach last season at Cortland State ... Shaun Hannah hired at Sacred Heart.

MEN'S LACROSSE ASSISTANT--Chris Burdick, an assistant coach at Massachusetts since 1995, appointed assistant coach at Cornell. Burdick was a four-year letter winner at Delaware, where he also was an assistant coach from 1993 to 1995.

WOMEN'S SOCCER--Julie Berwind named head coach at Pfeiffer.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Brandeis named Linda Smith as assistant women's coach ... Paul Stahlschmidt appointed assistant men's coach at Pfeiffer.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Patricia Morano hired at Johnson and Wales.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING ASSISTANT--Eric McIlquham, a graduate assistant swimming coach at Alabama the past two years, named assistant swimming coach at Virginia. McIlquham was an assistant coach with the Egyptian swimming team at the 1996 Olympics.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS--Erin Griffiths, men's tennis coach at Clarkson, hired as interim part-time head women's basketball coach at Plattsburgh State for the 1996-97 season. Griffiths also was assistant women's basketball coach last year ... Pfeiffer head men's and women's coach Mary Ann Sunbury named assistant athletics director in charge of compliance.

STAFF

FACILITIES AND GAME MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR--Cheryl Gasper hired as director of facilities and game management at Virginia Tech.

MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT--Tennessee-Chattanooga hired Sunnie Ewing as assistant director of media relations. Ewing was assistant sports information director at Florida International and also worked at the Midwestern Conference office.

SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANTS--Ira Bembry, Traci Allen and Chris Leverett named assistant sports information directors at Norfolk State. Bembry returns to Norfolk State after serving an internship with the Green Bay Packers public relations office. Allen was an intern sportswriter with the Richmond (Virginia) Times-Dispatch. Leverett is a 1996 Albion graduate ... Beth James appointed assistant SID at Brown. James was coordinator of sports communications the past two years at Rhode Island. She replaces Dawn Wright, who resigned to become an assistant women's ice hockey coach at Brown ... Jason West named assistant SID at Texas-San Antonio.

ATHLETIC TRAINER--Scot Ward appointed head trainer at New England. Ward has been a physical therapist assistant at the MARC Physical Therapy, Sports Medicine Clinic in New Jersey and a high-school trainer.

ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER--Ivy Chait, a 1996 Hofstra graduate, named assistant athletic trainer at St. Francis (New York). Chait was a student assistant in the training department at Hofstra and interned with the New York Jets, the New York Saints and the Policemen's Benevolent Association football team ... Shaun Riley hired at New England, his alma mater where he also was a student trainer.

ASSOCIATIONS

Russ Granik, deputy commissioner and chief operating officer of the National Basketball Association, elected president of USA Basketball for the 1996-2000 quadrennium. Granik succeeds 1992-96 president C. M. Newton. Also elected to USA Basketball's executive committee were: Tom Jernstedt, NCAA, vice-president; Quinn Buckner, Ward Howell International, vice-president for men; Chris Plonsky, Texas, vice-president for women; Valerie Ackerman, Women's National Basketball Association, secretary; and James E. Delany, Big Ten Conference, treasurer.

CORRECTION

In a table for the 1996-97 general operating budget that appeared in the September 2 issue of The NCAA News, the expense line for "contingency" should be $1 million for 1994-95 and $1.5 million for 1995-96. Also, the budgeted Convention expense should be $548,000 for 1994-95 and $521,000 for 1995-96.


NOTABLES

Nebraska-Omaha associate athletics director Connie Claussen and Arizona head women's softball coach Mike Candrea will be inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame December 7 in New Orleans. Claussen laid the groundwork for the Nebraska-Omaha team while teaching physical education there. She has served on several NCAA committees, including the Executive Committee and as chair of the Division II Championships Committee. Candrea led his team to the 1996 Women's College World Series title, his fourth since 1991. Candrea has been at Arizona for six years, after five successful seasons at Central Arizona Junior College.

USA Basketball named Tara VanDerveer as coach of the year and Mike Montgomery as developmental coach of the year in the inaugural year of the awards. VanDerveer, head women's basketball coach at Stanford, was coach of the gold-medal 1996 U.S. Olympic women's basketball team/women's national team. She took a sabbatical from Stanford to coach the Olympic team. Montgomery, head men's coach at Stanford, was head coach of the 1996 USA men's 22 and under world championship qualifying team. The awards were established to recognize USA Basketball head coaches who, during the year of the award, made a significant impact on the success of individual athlete and team performances at the highest level of competition and at the developmental level.

Becky Bauer, a 5-11 setter for Minnesota, was named Division I player of the week by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. Division II player of the week was Kaersten Hill of UC Davis. Kristin Bufka of Catholic named Division III player of the week.

Winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of October 5 (week No. 6) are: longest run from scrimmage, 73 yards, Chris Rooney, Akron vs. Kent; longest pass play, 87 yards (TD), Henry Burris to Van Johnson, Temple vs. Pittsburgh; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 53.3 yards on four punts, Jeremy Hernandez, Texas Tech vs. Baylor; longest punt return, 94 yards (TD), Isaac Byrd, Kansas vs. Oklahoma; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Eric Vann, Kansas vs. Oklahoma; and longest field goal, 53 yards (tie), Dave Frakes, Georgia Tech vs. Virginia, and Tony Truant, Washington State vs. Arizona. AT&T donates $400 weekly for each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

Florida State linebacker Sam Cowart named the fifth member of the College Football Association's Good Works Team. After intensive training, Cowart spent this past summer traveling to youth organizations around the state of Florida talking about self-esteem, the importance of education, combating drug abuse and adopting healthy lifestyles.

Todd Fuller, former basketball player at North Carolina State, and Chris Palmer, former football and baseball player at St. John's (Minnesota), named the 1995-96 GTE Academic All-America Team Members of the Year for all sports in the university and college divisions, respectively. The voting was conducted by a special committee representing the College Sports Information Director of America (CoSIDA). Fuller, the 1996 first-round draft choice of the Golden State Warriors, graduated in May with a 3.970 grade-point average in mathematics. Palmer earned a 3.940 GPA as a biology major.
