Interpretations Committee minutes

Conference No. 9
August 27, 1996

Acting for the NCAA Council, the committee issued the following interpretations:

Precollege Expense/Test Score

1. Institution Providing Expenses for Prospect To Challenge Invalidation of Test Score. An institution may not incur any expenses (e.g., legal expenses, mailing costs) to assist a prospect in challenging an invalidation of his or her test score by the testing agency, even if the prospect has signed a National Letter of Intent, or has been officially accepted for enrollment at that institution. [References: NCAA Bylaws 13.2.1 (offers and inducements -- general regulation), 13.16.1 (precollege expense -- prohibited expenses) and 13.16.2.1 (ACT and SAT scores).]

Admissions/Recruiting/Student-Athlete

2. Student-Athlete Participating in Admissions Program "Road Shows" (Divisions I, II and III). In Divisions I and II, an enrolled student-athlete may not be a participant in off-campus presentations (e.g., "road shows") pursuant to the institution's office of admissions recruitment process directed at all prospective students, including nonathletes. The committee agreed to forward this issue to the NCAA Division III Steering Committee for its review. [References: 13.1.2.3-(a) (admissions program) and 13.1.2.8 (student-athlete).]
