Eastern Kentucky selects associate AD

Betty Werner, formerly women's athletics director and associate director of athletics at Drake, has been named associate director of athletics for internal affairs at Eastern Kentucky.

record Werner began her athletics career at Maryville (Tennessee) in 1972 as men's tennis coach and women's basketball coach. She moved to Drake in 1974 as women's tennis coach and women's athletics director.

During her 13 years at Drake, Werner also served as associate AD for men's and women's athletics and senior woman administrator.

Werner most recently was nonprofit group coordinator for ARAMARK, the official concessionaire at Coors Field and Denver Coliseum in Denver. With ARAMARK, she developed a program for nonprofit organizations to raise money through selling concessions at Coors Field.

At Eastern Kentucky, Werner will work with budgeting, scheduling, compliance, facility management, event management and evaluation of coaching and support personnel.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Oscar Remick, chancellor and chief executive officer at Westminster (Pennsylvania), announced his retirement, effective July 1, 1997.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Sue Glatter, director of compliance at Baylor since 1995, named associate athletics director and senior woman administrator at UTEP. Glatter, who spent six years at the NCAA as an eligibility representative, will coordinate compliance and women's sports at UTEP ... Washington State announced the resignation of Harold Gibson to become president of the Copper Bowl.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Kathie Cain named assistant athletics director for business affairs at William and Mary. Cain had been business manager of athletics at Dartmouth for the past seven years. She also supervised the Hanover Country Club, Dartmouth's 18-hole golf course.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Sue Glatter named senior woman administrator at UTEP, where she also will be associate athletics director. Glatter has been compliance director at Baylor since 1995.

COACHES

BASEBALL--Kevin McMullan, head coach at Indiana (Pennsylvania) from 1993 to 1996, hired as assistant coach at St. John's (New York) ... North Carolina A&T named Keith Shumate.

BASEBALL ASSISTANTS--Central Florida hired Greg Frady, Jim Newlin and Chuck Schall as assistant coaches, replacing Mike Maack, Rob Sidwell and Brett Ragland. Frady joins the staff as the full-time assistant coach in charge of hitters and infielders, as well as recruiting. Newlin, a pitcher for the 1989 national-championship Wichita State baseball team and a veteran of six years in the professional ranks, will work with Central Florida pitchers. Schall will volunteer
as a coach of catchers ... Kevin McMullan and Mike Maerten hired at St. John's (New York). McMullan joins the staff from Indiana (Pennsylvania), where he was head coach from 1993 to 1996. Maerten pitched for St. John's from 1991 to 1995 and received a master's degree in finance in May from the school ... Dave Serrano appointed assistant coach at Cal State Fullerton. Serrano was pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the past two seasons at Tennessee ... Rusty Green promoted to head assistant coach at Jacksonville. Green has been an assistant at the school for the past six seasons.

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Alabama State appointed David Oness, Joe Proctor and Calvin Cochran as assistant coaches. Oness was an assistant at Ashland from 1994 to 1996. Proctor has been an assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City for the past nine years. Cochran is restricted-earnings coach and has been director of the Montgomery Campus Outreach Program for the past five years ... Moravian named Matt Lederer assistant coach ... Scott Eaton hired at Brown. Eaton was athletics director at Dighton-Rehoboth Regional High School and coached the boys' basketball team there for the past nine seasons ... Larry Matros named volunteer assistant at Stony Brook ... Dave Macedo and Tony Modrovsky hired at Wilkes. Macedo, a 1996 graduate of Wilkes, was a four-year starter and is the school's all-time leader in steals. Modrovsky, a 1996 Bloomsburg graduate, was a four-year letter-winner for the Huskies ... Long Island-C. W. Post hired Kevin Corbett as assistant coach and promoted Delano Chandler from graduate assistant coach to assistant coach ... Mike Wilson named at North Carolina-Wilmington ... Rob Kirsch appointed volunteer assistant coach at Massachusetts.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL--Laura Mitchell, head coach at Dallas since May 1995, hired at UC Santa Cruz. Mitchell began her collegiate coaching career in 1994 as an assistant coach at Dallas ... Delaware Valley appointed Laura Rotz to replace Chris MacBrien as the position there is upgraded to full-time status. Rotz is a 1990 Delaware Valley graduate and ranks as the school's all-time leading women's basketball scorer with 1,413 points. She has been assistant coach at Philadelphia Textile for the past six seasons.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Former Southland Conference player of the year Trenia Tillis appointed assistant coach at Arkansas. Tillis played at Stephen F. Austin as an undergraduate and spent one year playing professionally in Spain ... Western Carolina appointed Janet Dixon assistant coach ... Manchester hired Kristie Maravalli ... Michael Einecker selected as assistant coach at Lafayette.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Steve Curran appointed at Jacksonville after serving two years as an assistant coach at the Ebony Track Club in Kingston, Jamaica. Curran, who ran cross country and track at Fitchburg State as an undergraduate, spent two years in Jamaica with the Peace Corps.

FIELD HOCKEY ASSISTANTS--Cinda Cattermole and Sarah Whitkowski hired at Delaware.

FOOTBALL--Mississippi head coach Tommy Tuberville given a 10-year contract extension. Tuberville was hired at Mississippi in 1995 and is 8-6 since taking over the football program.

WOMEN'S GOLF ASSISTANT--Valerie Moore named assistant coach and assistant golf professional at Purdue.

MEN'S LACROSSE ASSISTANT--Hofstra named Bill Wilson assistant lacrosse coach.

WOMEN'S ROWING--Rick Kelliher returned to Jacksonville as head rowing coach. Kelliher served as women's rowing coach at the school from 1988 to 1991 before coaching stints at Boston College, Massachusetts and Pittsburgh.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Rick Gutierrez appointed assistant men's coach at Adrian. Gutierrez has coached at the high-school level ... Mark Puican selected at assistant men's coach at Delaware and Mike Kleinert and William Thorp named assistant women's coaches at the school.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Diane Hobin hired at Stony Brook. Hobin was a standout softball and basketball player at Hofstra.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL ASSISTANT--Harry Kaiser appointed assistant coach at Lafayette.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING--American named Michael Westwood head diving coach. He has been head coach at James Madison, a diving instructor and counselor at Penn State summer sports camps, and assistant director of the Montgomery Diving Club and Montgomery Aquatics LEFT ... Tim Flannery, head swimming coach at Merchant Marine since 1993, appointed at Kutztown, replacing Ken Ralph, who became assistant coach at Air Force ... Scott Anthony named head diving coach at UC Santa Barbara.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING ASSISTANTS--UC Santa Barbara hired Jeff Kubiax as head assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach and Mani Zarrehparvar as an assistant swimming coach.

MEN'S TENNIS--Mike Anderson, a long-time coach on the United States Tennis Association circuit, hired at Radford. Anderson has coached USTA adult leagues since 1985.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD--Tony Nading, head track coach at Anderson (Indiana) last year, appointed assistant track and field coach at Jacksonville. Nading also has coached at Indiana State ... Carmen Matteis named women's track and field coach at Kean.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD ASSISTANTS--Mike Ledsome hired at Sam Houston State ... Jim Jones and Ken Swan appointed assistants at Purdue. Jones, a four-year letter-winner at Purdue before his graduation this year, will assist in the throwing events. Swan, who was a member of the Indiana and Purdue swim teams, will be a volunteer coach for pole vaulters.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Hunter appointed Dinu Dan as men's volleyball coach. Dan was head coach of the women's volleyball program at St. Elizabeth last season and was an assistant men's coach at Rutgers-Newark before that. He replaces Richard Mercado, who compiled an 11-42 record in his two-year tenure at Hunter.

STAFF

BUSINESS MANAGER--Ken Snelling, assistant executive officer for development and alumni relations at Dartmouth since 1993, promoted to athletics business manager. Snelling joined the Dartmouth staff in 1989 as an administrative assistant in development and alumni affairs ... Youngstown State hired Ron Strollo as athletics business manager. Strollo was a four-year letter-winner in football at Youngstown State. A certified public accountant, he previously was employed by Hill Barth & King, Inc.

MEDIA RELATIONS DIRECTOR--Vincent DiCarlo appointed media relations director at Stony Brook. DiCarlo was an assistant in the office of athletics communications at Princeton last year.

MEDIA RELATIONS ASSISTANT--Stony Brook promoted Kris Doorey to assistant media relations director. She was a student assistant in the athletics media relations office during the past two years.

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR--Pat Donghia, director of sports information and promotion at Lock Haven for six years, hired at Penn State as assistant sports information director.

SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANTS--Phil di Montmollin hired as assistant sports information director at Miami (Florida). He assisted with football press box operations at Miami in 1995 and was an intern in the sports information office during the spring and summer of 1996. De Montmollin replaces David Tratner, who left Miami to become publications manager at SportsLine USA ... Luke Sacks and Jim Miller appointed sports information interns at Delaware.

CONFERENCES

Mike Villamor named assistant information director at the Big West Conference. Villamor had been a public relations assistant for the West Coast Conference since August 1995 and was media relations director for the San Jose Grizzlies of the Continental Indoor Soccer League during the 1995 season.

The Southern Conference appointed two assistant commissioners. Heather Czeczok, who was assistant director of media relations at Maryland, will be assistant commissioner for media relations. Gil Grimes, who earned a law degree last spring at Alabama and worked in the athletics ticket office there, was named assistant commissioner for compliance.

ASSOCIATIONS

The United States Tennis Association named Kirk Anderson coordinator of Play Tennis America and Bill Leong coordinator of the USTA schools program.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America has relocated its national office within the Kansas City area. The new address is 6700 Squibb Road, Suite 215, Mission, Kansas 66202. The fax and phone numbers remain the same.

INTERNET

The Midwestern Collegiate Conference has established a presence on the Internet, including a new league home page and e-mail addresses for each staff member. The conference home page on the World Wide Web (http://www.mccnet.org) includes releases and statistics on each conference sport, as well as general news about the league.

AGREEMENTS

The Mid-Continent Conference has signed a two-year agreement making the CITGO Corporation the official title sponsor of the conference's men's basketball tournament for 1997 and 1998. The 1997 tournament will be March 2-4.

The Cotton Bowl Athletic Association announced that Southwestern Bell will serve as title sponsor of the 60-year-old Cotton Bowl game through the year 2000. The four-year, $5.2 million sponsorship begins with the January 1, 1997, game.

INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION

Members of the International Baseball Association have voted to allow professionals to compete in international base-
ball competitions, including the Olympic Games. The action, effective immediately, removes the word "amateur" from the IBA's constitution and bylaws and allows professional athletes to represent their respective countries in international baseball competitions.

The winners of the AT&T Long Distance Awards for college football games played through the weekend of September 21 (week No. 4) are: longest run from scrimmage, 86 yards, DeMond Parker, Oklahoma vs. San Diego State; longest pass play, 82 yards Ronnie McAda to Ron Thomas, Army vs. Duke; longest punt average (minimum two punts), 53 yards on two punts, Aron Langley, Wyoming vs. Air Force; longest punt return, 81 yards, Keyon Laws, Ball State vs. Central Florida; longest kickoff return, 100 yards, Kalief Muhammad, Baylor vs. Oregon State; and longest field goal, 55 yards, Armen Torigian, Fresno State vs. Utah. AT&T provides $400 weekly in each of the six categories to the NCAA Degree-Completion Scholarship Program.

The All-American Football Foundation's Banquet of Champions IV featured the presentation of Johnny Vaught Head Coach Lifetime Achievement Awards. Recipients (and the schools where they coached) were Bob Blackman, Dartmouth, Illinois and Cornell; Frank Burns, Rutgers; Dick Colman, Princeton; Fritz Crisler, Princeton and Michigan; Charles "Rip" Engle, Brown and Penn State; Hayden Fry, Southern Methodist, North Texas State and Iowa; Harry Gamble, Lafayette and Pennsylvania; Lou Holtz, William and Mary, North Carolina State, Arkansas, Minnesota, and Notre Dame; Johnny Majors, Pittsburgh, Iowa State and Tennessee; Joe Restic, Harvard; Eddie Robinson, Grambling; Ben Schwartzwalder, Syracuse; and Jim Tatum, Maryland and North Carolina.

Dean Smith, head men's basketball coach at North Carolina, appointed to the National Advisory Board of the National Teachers Hall of Fame. The hall of fame was established in 1989 in Emporia, Kansas, to honor kindergarten through 12th-grade teachers and the teaching profession through a recognition program, museum, and conference and resource LEFT. To date, 25 educators have been recognized and inducted into the hall during induction ceremonies every June.

Kate DeClerk, a 6-2 middle blocker for Kansas State, was named the American Volleyball Coaches Association player of the week for Division I. Ann Sieckert of Augustana (South Dakota) took the honors for Division II, and Emmy Sjogren of Washington (Missouri) was named Division III player of the week.

Vanderbilt defensive back Rosevelt Noble was recognized as the third member of the College Football Association's Good Works Team. Noble has contributed to several service groups and organizations in the Nashville, Tennessee, area, including developing a mentoring program in which student-athletes work with youth 12 to 18 years old.


DEATHS

John Lawther, head men's basketball coach at Penn State from 1937 through 1949, died September 21 at his home in North Carolina. He was 97. During his tenure, the Nittany Lions compiled a 150-93 record. Lawther was elected to the NAIA Basketball Hall of Fame in 1962 and is a member of the Helms Foundation Hall of Fame.

Zigmund "Red" Mihalik, a basketball referee in NCAA and Olympic championships in the 1960s, died September 25 in Ford City, Pennsylvania. Mihalik officiated at six NCAA finals and was a basketball referee at the Olympics in 1964 in Tokyo and in 1968 in Mexico City. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame in 1986. The school gymnasium in Ford City, where Mihalik played basketball and began his referee career, is named for him.
