Illinois Wesleyan hires volleyball coach

Kim Nelson-Brown, a former all-Missouri Valley Conference volleyball player at Illinois State, has been appointed head women's volleyball coach at Illinois Wesleyan.

Nelson-Brown replaces Tracy Stroyan-Maynard, who retired last month to devote more time to her family.

Nelson-Brown was head volleyball coach at Maroa-Forsyth High School in 1995 and at Oak Forest High School in 1994. She also coached the Mid-State Volleyball Club in Normal, Illinois, in 1994 and 1996, and the Chicago Juniors Volleyball Club in Evergreen Park in 1992 and 1993.

Nelson-Brown also will be an instructor in physical education and assistant track coach at Illinois Wesleyan. For the past year, she served as an athletics study center assistant and tutor coordinator at Illinois State, assisting coaches with campus recruiting and acting as the athletics department's liaison to the university's Center for Learning Assistance.

Shumard has been interim AD the past five months. He also had served Long Beach State as assistant vice-president for university relations and development and as assistant athletics director for the past two years. He handled community relations for the Los Angeles Dodgers for 13 years ... Richard Tharp, former chief counsel and vice president at Colorado, named interim AD at the school ... Fort Lewis hired J. R. Smith, replacing Harlan Steinle, who was interim AD. Smith has worked in athletics at Metropolitan State for the past 11 years, the last six as assistant AD ... Christopher Bledsoe, director of athletics and recreation at Pace since 1988, named AD at New York University. Bledsoe, who has been on the Pace staff since 1981, also has been sports information director and assistant AD there ... St. Paul's named Monique Morgan interim AD. Morgan has been sports information director since 1994 and senior woman administrator since 1983 ... Eastern New Mexico appointed B. B. Lee interim athletics director until July 1, 1997.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

John Noel Jr., wrestling coach at Cornell from 1974 to 1988, hired as associate athletics director there. He has been in private business since leaving Cornell in 1990. Noel served as assistant director in the Cornell athletics public affairs office for two years after ending his coaching career ... New Hampshire announced two promotions: David O'Connor, assistant AD for men's athletics, named senior associate AD and compliance officer, and Tim Moriarty, ticket manager for the past year, promoted to associate AD for internal operations ... Stan Hyman given additional duties as associate athletics director at Albright. He will continue as head baseball coach and sports information director ... Cliff Dochterman, general manager of a minor-league baseball team in Texas for the past three seasons, hired at UC Riverside. Dochterman also has served stints in professional football and soccer and in collegiate athletics ... Patric Simon appointed associate AD at St. Augustine's ... Texas-Arlington associate AD Cathy Beene named director of tennis at Georgia Southern. New Hampshire hired Susan St. Louis as assistant athletics director for finance. She had been director of administration and financial services at New Hampshire-Manchester since 1992 ... Tomas Jimenez selected as assistant AD for academics at Northern Arizona. He spent the past two years in the division of enrollment and academic services at Central Florida ... Dr. Robert Monaco named assistant AD/director of sports medicine at Rutgers. Monaco recently completed a year's fellowship in primary care sports medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey and the Hospital for Special Surgery at Cornell. He has been an assistant team physician at Princeton ... American appointed Peter Sauer assistant AD for marketing. Sauer had been administrative assistant for basketball at Maryland since 1989.

Alison DiTomaso named assistant AD for sports information at Wellesley. DiTomaso has been sports publicity assistant at Texas ... Dennis Toney appointed assistant AD for tickets and game operations at Massachusetts. Toney was director of athletics ticket operations at South Carolina from 1988 to 1992, when he entered private business. Toney replaces Thorr Bjorn, who was named assistant AD for marketing and promotions ... Mark Rountree hired at Texas-Pan American.

Cheryl Feeney named at Lynn, where she also will be head women's basketball coach and assistant to the director of athletics. Feeney was athletics director and head women's basketball coach at Suncoast High School ... Texas-Arlington's Cathy Beene named director of tennis at Georgia Southern ... Amy Perko, an NCAA enforcement representative and a member of the NCAA staff since 1990, named senior woman administrator at Kansas.

Baseball--Gregg Kilby named at Lynn. He was an assistant coach at Nevada ... Keith Ross hired at St. Paul's as head baseball coach and intramurals coordinator. Ross has been an assistant at Norfolk State ... New Mexico State announced the resignation of Elliott Avent ... Bob Hartz promoted to head coach at Rochester ... Dale Varsho named at Wisconsin-River Falls, succeeding Craig Walter, who resigned. Varsho was an assistant coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire in 1993 and 1994 and has been a player/coach with the Eau Claire Cavaliers since 1994.

Baseball assistants--John Kirkgard hired at UC Santa Barbara ... Erik Hagen appointed at Cincinnati ... Ron Aulet selected at Hiram, where he also will be assistant men's basketball coach.

Men's basketball--Tim Floyd, who coached Iowa State to a Big Eight Conference postseason tournament championship and into the second round of the NCAA tournament, given a five-year contract extension. The extension extends Floyd's contract through the 2005-06 season. Floyd was Big Eight coach of the year last season ... Ben Jobe, head coach at Southern-Baton Rouge since 1986, appointed at Tuskegee ... Rowan appointed Joe Cassidy interim coach. Cassidy has been an assistant coach at Rowan for the past five years, as well as athletics academic coordinator ... Art Perry, an assistant at Maryland for the past six years, named at Delaware State, replacing Fred Goodman whose contract was not renewed ... Dick Baldwin announced his retirement at Binghamton. Baldwin, who is 75, coached for 49 years, the last five at Binghamton. He coached at Broome County Community College in Binghamton from 1946 to 1987, compiling a 879-290 record. Binghamton associate head coach Jim Norris, a 22-year coaching veteran who has been Baldwin's top assistant at Binghamton, was named to replace Baldwin ... Ashland appointed Roger Lyons, who also served as head coach of the Eagles from 1986 to 1989. He most recently was an assistant coach at Grand Valley State and has coached at the professional level ... Saint Louis extended the contract of head coach Charlie Spoonhour through the 2001 season. In four seasons at Saint Louis, Spoonhour has led the Billikens to two NCAA tournament bids and one National Invitation Tournament appearance.

Men's basketball assistants--Mike Madagan, an assistant at Florida Southern for four years, hired at South Florida ... Tony Stubblefield appointed at Texas-Arlington. He was an assistant at Texas-San Antonio last season ... Adam Crawford and Steve Baker selected at New York University. Crawford has been a commodities exchange clerk on Wall Street for the past few years and Baker most recently was head boys' basketball coach at Parkville High School in Baltimore ... Colorado appointed Michael Sykes as men's basketball administrative assistant. Sykes was a student manager at Kansas before his graduation last spring ... Mark Johnson hired at Fort Hays State. He was an assistant at Phillips last season ... Scott Matthews named at Missouri-St. Louis. He has been an assistant coach at Northeast Missouri State and Pfeiffer ... King's (Pennsylvania) selected Michael McKee and Marty Moyers as assistant coaches. McKee was a four-year letter winner at King's and an assistant coach at his alma mater in 1995-96. Moyers was an assistant coach at his alma mater, Radford, during the 1995-96 season ... Bill Sall, interim head coach at Ferris State last year, retained as an assistant coach. Also hired was John Siemen, an administrative assistant last season and student manager for two years before that ... Roanoke selected Katrina Silva, assistant women's lacrosse coach last year at Virginia Tech. Silva also will be women's lacrosse coach at Roanoke ... Vickie Sax hired at Mansfield. Field hockey assistants--Jodi Carter selected at Albright. She was a four-year member of the Syracuse field hockey team ... Julie Lincks named at Hofstra, where she also will be assistant women's lacrosse coach. She was a part-time assistant in both sports last year ... Marq Mellor appointed at Fairfield. Mellor, who coached last season at La Salle, was a member of the 1996 Olympic team in Atlanta.

Football assistants--Herky Billings, offensive coordinator at Delaware State for 10 years and assistant head coach last season, resigned to accept a teaching and coaching position in the Seaford, Delaware, school district. Franz Kappel, who begins his ninth season at the school, was named offensive coordinator ... E. J. Sandusky named at Albright. Sandusky has been a graduate assistant at North Carolina and an assistant coach at Western Carolina ... Albany (New York) announced the appointment of four assistant coaches: Frank Derrico, a high-school coach for 17 years, named offensive backfield coach; Corey Goff, an assistant coach at Susquehanna, graduate assistant coach; Keith Shorter, an assistant at St. Lawrence since 1992, graduate assistant coach; and Mark Stratton, an assistant at Hartwick last season, graduate assistant coach ... Brad Smith, a former club professional and high-school golf coach, named women's coach at Dayton, replacing Tracy Hart, who resigned ... Lonnie Barton hired at Long Island-Brooklyn ... Ray Leuellyn given additional duties as golf coach at Missouri-Rolla. Luellyn has been assistant manager and head professional at the Missouri-Rolla Golf Course for the past four years ... Men's ice hockey--Peter LaVigne named head coach at Fairfield, replacing John McCarthy, who had held the position since 1968. LaVigne has spent the past eight years as a teacher and coach at Fairfield Prep, which shares a campus with the university.

Men's lacrosse--Forrest "Skip" Milne promoted to full-time status at Gordon as men's lacrosse coach and women's tennis coach and given additional duties as aquatics director.

Men's lacrosse assistant--Joe Alberici, assistant coach at Army, named at Duke ... Rob Randall, head coach at Sacred Heart for four years, hired as an assistant coach at Army. Randall led the Sacred Heart squad from club to varsity status during his tenure.

Women's lacrosse--Katrina Silva hired at Roanoke, where she also will be head field hockey coach. Silva spent last season as assistant women's lacrosse coach at American ... Lisa Peterson, head coach at Shenandoah since 1994, resigned to take a position as a graphics software operator in Colorado. Her squad was 6-4 last spring in its first season of varsity competition. Peterson also was head women's soccer coach... Lisa Miller hired as head coach of the first women's lacrosse team at Syracuse. She spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Brown ... Kathryn Vignati appointed at Fairfield to head the school's first varsity women's lacrosse team. She also will be assistant women's soccer coach. Vignati has coached at Vermont and Sacred Heart.

Dyer will relinquish his tennis coaching duties to concentrate on soccer ... Bard hired Robert Acunto to replace Gregory Moss-Brown, who became an assistant men's coach at Hartwick. Acunto was an assistant coach at Springfield ... Brad Evans, an assistant for the past two years at Ashland, promoted to head coach. He also will be head women's coach ... Jeff Dezago named at Bard, replacing Artie Gribbins, who became assistant women's coach at Northeastern. Wingate announced the resignation of Scott Behe and the appointment of Gary Hamill as director of soccer. Hamill, who has been men's soccer coach for the past three seasons at Wingate, now will have responsibility for both men's and women's teams. Hamill relinquished his duties as men's tennis coach. The National Association of Sports Officials elected Ed T. Rush to the board of directors for a two-year term. Rush just completed his 27th season as a member of the NBA officiating staff. NASO serves amateur, high-school, collegiate and professional sports officials.

CORRECTIONS

Boise State and Idaho were not included in a list of playing-surface descriptions for Division I-A institutions that appeared in the August 19 issue of The NCAA News. Both institutions are new to Division I-A this year. Both have artificial surfaces, meaning that the percentage of I-A members with natural playing surfaces is 63.1 percent.

Individuals who use the NCAA Football records book should note that both Boise State and Idaho are listed as Division I-AA members in the schedules and results section, and their stadiums are not listed with other I-A stadiums.

CONFERENCE MEMBERS

The Eastern College Athletic Conference announced that Virginia Tech and Cabrini have joined the nation's largest athletics conference. Virginia Tech is a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference and the Big East Football Conference. Cabrini is a charter member of the Pennsylvania Athletic Conference.

Southern Utah, an independent since the American West Conference dissolved earlier this year, announced it will join the Mid-Continent Conference and begin league competition in fall 1997. The addition of Southern Utah brings the conference membership to 10 schools.

Southeastern Louisiana and Lamar will become members of the Southland Conference, effective July 1, 1997. Since 1991, Southeastern Louisiana has been competing in the Trans America Athletic Conference and will stay with the TAAC for the 1996-97 season. Lamar was a charter member of the Southland Conference but left in 1986 to join the American South Conference. Lamar currently is a member of the Sun Belt Conference. The Southland Conference will have 11 members.

AGREEMENTS

The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority voted to extend its title sponsorship agreement for the Las Vegas Bowl through the 1998 game.

CONTESTS

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America is sponsoring its second annual writing contest to recognize the best writers who chronicle soccer's personalities, problems, games and growth. Any story published during the 1996 calendar year will be eligible. The deadline for submissions is December 5, 1996, and winners will be awarded plaques and recognized at the 50th annual NSCAA convention January 15-19, 1997, in Nashville. Notables

The All-American Football Foundation, Inc., honored coaches and athletics administrators August 17 at its Banquet of Champions IV in Mobile, Alabama. The dinner was dedicated to Paul "Bear" Bryant, who coached at Maryland, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Alabama, and Ralph "Shug" Jordan of Auburn. Coaches honored were Emory Bellard of Texas A&M and Mississippi State, Bill Yeoman of Houston, Marino Casem of Alcorn State, Dewitt Weaver of Texas Tech, and Len Casanova of Santa Clara, Pittsburgh and Oregon. Honored posthumously were Wallace Wade of Alabama, Bobby Dodd of Georgia Tech, Wally Butts of Georgia and Mike Brumbelow of UTEP.


Deaths

Lawrence Kelly, football coach at Manhattan from 1965 through 1973, died August 14 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was 62. Kelly had the most wins in Manhattan history and compiled a record of 35-30.

Tom Mees, a sportscaster for ESPN since its founding in 1979, drowned in a neighbor's pool, apparently while trying to save a child. He was 46. Mees was a SportsCenter anchor from ESPN's premiere September 7, 1979, until 1993. He had since worked as the play-by-play commentator for ESPN2's NHL coverage and, since 1994, also had broadcast college football and basketball games and hosted the NHL draft.

Derek Smith, 34, a star on Louisville's 1980 NCAA championship basketball team, died August 9 while on a cruise. The ship, which carried staff members of the Washington Bullets, was returning from the Bahamas. Smith, who played for nine seasons in the National Basketball Association, was an assistant coach with the Bullets last season.

Leroy Tracy Borah, who served primarily as wrestling coach and athletics director during 29 years at Western State, died August 8 of a heart attack at his home near Gunnison, Colorado. He was 71. Borah was a member of the Colorado High School Coaches Association Hall of Fame, Western State College Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame and the NCAA Division II Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame. He had served with national and state wrestling organizations and committees.
