Wisconsin conferences hire NCAA's Karner

Gary Karner, a compliance representative in the NCAA national office since 1988, has been named commissioner of the Wisconsin State University Conference (WSUC) and the Wisconsin Women's Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The leagues will be merged into one entity beginning with the 1996-97 academic year, with headquarters in Madison.

Karner's background in athletics includes strong ties to the state of Wisconsin. He received an undergraduate degree in education from Wisconsin-Stevens Point and a master's degree and doctorate in educational administration from Wisconsin. While earning the doctorate, Karner served as administration intern in the athletics division and was an administrative intern in the WSUC office.

After earning the doctorate, Karner moved to the Woodland Park, Colorado, school district as director of athletics/activities. He remained there until taking the NCAA position.

Raymond Burse, a Rhodes Scholar who was president of Kentucky State in the 1980s and currently is a lawyer in Louisville, Kentucky, appointed president at Alabama A&M. Burse was a member of the NCAA Presidents Commission in 1984 and 1985 while at Kentucky State ... Bryant selected Ron Machtley as its new president. Machtley was a Republican congressman from Rhode Island from 1988 to 1994 ... Mickey Burnim appointed chancellor at Elizabeth City State. He had been interim chancellor since September ... Western State selected Harry Peterson, deputy chancellor of the Minnesota State College and Universities System, as president ... James Jones Jr., vice-provost of Southern Methodist and dean of Dedman College at Southern Methodist, appointed president at Kalamazoo.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Eastern Illinois announced that Bob McBee has been reassigned to other duties ... Pete Liske hired at Toledo ... Lake Superior State appointed Bill Crawford ... Robert Malekoff hired at Wooster.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Donna DeMarino Sanft, a 21-year member of the Pittsburgh athletics staff, promoted to associate athletics director for student affairs and compliance, and Joe Phillips, who joined the athletics staff in 1992 after five years in the school's audit department, promoted to associate AD for administration. Sanft and Phillips were assistant athletics directors ... Fresno State appointed Scott Johnson, who has been acting associate AD since last fall. Johnson joined the Fresno State staff in 1981 as sports information director and in 1990 was appointed assistant AD for sports information/communications ... Gary Hogan, head baseball coach at Arkansas-Little Rock, promoted to associate AD for external affairs.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Pat Ryan, assistant athletics director for operations at Miami (Ohio) since 1992, named director of annual giving for the Miami Student Aid Association ... Marc Whitehouse, women's soccer and baseball coach at Gordon, given additional duties as assistant AD ... Chicago State selected Michael Chapman as assistant AD. He will oversee compliance, academic services, athletic training and nonrevenue sports. He also will direct game-day operations. Chapman was a professor in the department of health, physical education and recreation from 1994 to 1996 ... Loyola Marymount promoted Bruce Meyers, sports information director, to assistant AD for marketing and media relations. Meyers, who has been SID for six years, will retain sports information duties while assuming responsibility for supervision of four sports and enhanced marketing and promotion duties ... Alex Smolka named assistant AD for academics and student life at Florida Atlantic. Smolka joined the Florida Atlantic staff in 1992 as part-time compliance and recruiting coordinator and assistant men's and women's cross country coach. Most recently he was acting academic advisor for student-athletes ... Al Moffatt, assistant AD for academics at Oral Roberts, appointed head assistant women's basketball coach at the school ... Erica Ledy hired at Lake Superior State ... Jeff Martinez, head athletic trainer at Redlands the past 12 years, promoted to assistant AD. Martinez will retain his duties as head of the Bulldog sports medicine program.

BASEBALL--Brian Rhees, head coach at Bethune-Cookman, hired at Arkansas-Little Rock, replacing Gary Hogan, who retired from coaching after 11 years to become associate athletics director for external affairs ... Pepperdine selected Frank Sanchez, the top assistant coach as Southern California for the past 10 seasons ... Gary Pritchard selected as part-time head coach at Elizabethtown. A long-time participant in the mid-state Pennsylvania baseball scene, Pritchard spent the 1996 season as an assistant at Franklin & Marshall and the 1995 season as an assistant at Millersville ... Charleston Southern head coach Randy Mazey resigned to become an assistant coach at Georgia. Mazey led the Buccaneers to a 30-24-1 record in 1996 and earned Big South Conference coach of the year honors ... Jerry Gilsdorf hired at Gordon. He has been assistant coach at Wheaton (Illinois) since 1991 ... Worcester Polytechnic announced the resignation of Whit Griffith after 10 years as head baseball coach. He will continue to coach the men's and women's swimming teams and serve as assistant to the athletics director for competitive club sports and as aquatics director ... Cincinnati selected Brian Cleary ... James Ertel hired at St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania).

MEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Scott Rigot, who built Spartanburg (South Carolina) Methodist College into a national junior college power over the past six seasons, hired as an assistant coach at Alabama-Birmingham. Andy Kennedy, a former Alabama-Birmingham basketball standout, also was hired at the school ... Maryland appointed Dave Dickerson ... Scott Shreffler, an assistant at Stetson last year, hired as an assistant at Evansville, his alma mater ... Dean Murray appointed at Stony Brook ... Marquette promoted Dan Theiss, an assistant for seven seasons, to associate head coach. He also has coached at Plattsburgh State, Vermont and Siena.

Central Missouri State appointed Bill Walker, an assistant coach at Missouri-St. Louis for the past seven seasons ... St. John's (New York) selected Darren Savino as restricted-earnings coach. He was an administrative assistant with the Seton Hall basketball program in 1995 ... Rus Willette named as an assistant coach at Gordon, where he was a volunteer assistant last season ... Penn State hired Christian Appleman, a former two-sport Nittany Lion athlete and currently head professional at the Penn State Tennis Center, as restricted-earnings coach. Bardon-Till was an assistant coach at Bradley last season ... Sandy Thomas, top assistant at Michigan since 1992, hired at Indiana (Pennsylvania). Thomas also has coached at Maine ... WOMEN'S BASKETBALL ASSISTANTS--Brooke Smith appointed at Hofstra, replacing Tonya Yandrisevitz, who resigned to pursue other opportunities. Smith was an assistant at Stony Brook in 1995-96 ... Former South Florida head coach and North Carolina State standout Trudi Lacey appointed assistant coach at Maryland. Lacey was head coach at South Florida for the past eight years ... Lori Johnson selected at Wright State ... Delaware hired Jeanine Radice, an assistant at Seton Hall for the past four seasons ... Hartford selected Susan Cahill ... Oral Roberts appointed Al Moffatt as head assistant. He was assistant athletics director for academics before moving to the new position ... Carla Berry named at St. John's (New York). MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY--Gary Aldrich, assistant football coach at Alfred, reassigned to the position of head men's and women's cross country coach. He already serves as head men's and women's track and field coach ... Paul Lynn selected at Gordon to coach men's and women's teams.

FIELD HOCKEY--Rebecca Pierson, who played hockey at Gordon from 1990 to 1993, hired as head coach at her alma mater ... Tracy Houk appointed at Ithaca ... Kara Kierney hired at Franklin & Marshall. She also is women's lacrosse coach.

FOOTBALL--Rod Grubb, associate professor of political science and long-time assistant coach at St. Olaf, named interim head coach ... Rick Neuheisel awarded a one-year contract extension at Colorado.

FOOTBALL ASSISTANTS--Tom Dosch, an assistant at Jamestown College, hired as defensive line coach at North Dakota. He coached running backs as a graduate assistant at North Dakota during the 1993 and 1994 seasons ... Steve Bird appointed at Kent to coach tight ends and special teams. He was special teams and receivers coach at Pittsburgh from 1993 through 1995 ... Gene Mastin, a high-school head coach for 13 years, hired as defensive coordinator at Alfred. In a related move, Gary Aldrich reassigned as assistant football coach to become head men's and women's cross country coach, effective with the start of the 1996-97 academic year. He continues to serve as men's and women's track and field coach.

Craig Wederquist and Richard Myklebust named assistant coaches at Tarleton State. Wederquist, who has been defensive line coach and defensive coordinator at Pacific (California) for the past two seasons, will be defensive coordinator. Myklebust, who coached the offensive line at Hardin-Simmons last season, will coach the Tarleton State offensive line ... Wisconsin-Stout appointed Darrell Kluck as defensive coordinator and Dave Valk as offensive coordinator. Kluck was defensive line coach for three years at the school and Valk was quarterbacks and receivers coach last season. Valk replaces Curt Strasheim, who resigned to become quarterbacks coach at Western Illinois.

Fairfield announced several staff changes: Tom Colombo named assistant head coach and quarterbacks coach, Carnell Henderson wide receivers coach, Kyle Alexander defensive ends coach, Doug Carnigan outside linebackers coach, Mike Williams running backs coach, Clay Moran defensive backs coach, and Joe Bernard and Richard Linell part-time assistant coaches ... Thomas Cousins hired at Charleston Southern as defensive line and strength and conditioning coach.

WOMEN'S GOLF--Anne Kelly appointed at North Carolina-Greensboro.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY--Oswego State hired George Roll ... Bruce Crowder appointed at Northeastern.

MEN'S ICE HOCKEY ASSISTANT--Ron Rolston hired at Clarkson.

WOMEN'S SOCCER ASSISTANTS--Rikard Gronborg named assistant coach at Wisconsin-Stout. He also will be assistant hockey coach ... Diane Drake hired at North Carolina-Greensboro.

WOMEN'S SOFTBALL--Denise Daley, assistant athletics trainer at West Virginia Tech, given additional duties as softball coach. She was a two-time all-West Virginia Conference shortstop while a student at Charleston (West Virginia) ... Debbie Hedrick, assistant coach at Texas for the past two seasons, promoted to head coach. Hedrick was the most-victorious pitcher in NCAA softball history, completing a record-setting four-year career at Louisiana Tech with a 149-45 record ... Barbara Shenk hired at Elizabethtown ... Robin Petrini appointed at Penn State. Petrini was an assistant coach at Northwestern for the past eight years and served last season as associate head coach ... Southern Colorado selected Marty Blowers as head coach, replacing Alan Colglazier, who was interim coach during the 1996 season. Blowers was head coach at Sam Houston State ... Scott Woodard named at Western New Mexico.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S SWIMMING AND DIVING--Ginger Hurley appointed women's coach at Houston ... Gary Binfield hired as men's coach at Brown ... Tom Whittemore, head men's and women's swimming and water polo coach at Redlands for the past eight years, promoted to director of aquatics. Whittemore will retain his water polo coaching duties and will assist with the swimming programs. Also, Leslie Evans, an assistant coach in the Redlands swimming and water polo programs for two years, was promoted to aquatics coach and instructor and will head the men's and women's swimming programs. She will continue to assist with men's and women's water polo.

MEN'S TENNIS--Tim Cass hired as men's coach at Texas A&M.

WOMEN'S TENNIS--Stevens Tech appointed Evelyn Alfaro as women's coach ... Steve Price hired at Rockford. Price was team captain during his playing days at Illinois State and teaches and plays tennis in the Rockford, Illinois, area.

MEN'S AND WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL--Tim Koth hired to head the men's and women's programs at Quincy. Koth was interim head coach at Eastern Michigan in 1995 and assistant head coach there in 1994 ... Southern California named Pat Powers as head men's coach ... Ronald Richter hired at Thomas More.

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL ASSISTANT--Susan Deaton hired at North Carolina-Greensboro.

WRESTLING--Dave Grant, top assistant at Minnesota for the past 10 seasons, hired as head coach at Northern Illinois. He replaces Phil Rembert, whose contract was not renewed after his fourth season at Northern Illinois.

STAFF

ACADEMIC ENHANCEMENT DIRECTOR--Joanna Camp appointed director of academic enhancement at North Carolina-Greensboro.

ANNUAL GIVING DIRECTOR--Pat Ryan, assistant athletics director for operations at Miami (Ohio) since 1992, named director of annual giving for the Miami Student Aid Association.

ATHLETIC TRAINERS--Jay Geiger appointed at St. Rose ... Jeff Martinez, head athletic trainer at Redlands for 12 years, promoted to assistant athletics director. He will continue to oversee the sports medicine program.

ASSISTANT ATHELTIC TRAINERS--Stephanie Northey and Rich Cercone named graduate assistant athletic trainers.

COMPLIANCE COORDINATOR--Robert Mathner hired as the first compliance coordinator at Montana. Mathner assisted with compliance at Florida State for the past two years ... David Ridpath, assistant director of marketing and promotions at Weber State, named compliance coordinator at the school.

EXTERNAL AFFAIRS DIRECTOR--Chris Kenny hired as director of athletics external affairs at St. Michael's.

FACILITIES COORDINATOR/EVENTS MANAGEMENT DIRECTOR--Kimball Smith, Pittsburgh director of marketing and a member of the sports information staff for 19 years, appointed coordinator of facilities and event management director at the school.

MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS DIRECTOR--Pacific (California) announced that Bob Carruesco, director of marketing and promotions, resigned to take a similar position at Stanford.

MARKETING AND PROMOTIONS ASSISTANT
--Blake Sasaki hired at Weber State as assistant director of marketing and promotions, replacing David Ridpath, who was promoted to compliance coordinator.

SPORTS INFORMATION DIRECTOR--Dave Haglund, associate sports information director since 1990 at Pittsburgh, promoted to SID. Haglund has been on the sports information staff since 1981 ... Craig Fink, sports information director at Merchant Marine, named assistant director of public relations at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Fink had been at Merchant Marine since 1994 ... Chris Kenny, SID at St. Michael's since 1987, named director of external affairs. He will coordinate public relations, marketing and advancement programs at St. Michael's ... Dave Aglund appointed SID at Fresno State.

SPORTS INFORMATION ASSISTANTS--Brian Kuhlmann, Stetson assistant sports information director since August 1995, resigned to take a position in private business ... Dave Ebb and Hank Largin named assistant SIDs at Nebraska. Ebb will handle sports information duties for the women's volleyball team and men's and women's track and field teams. He has been an intern in the Nebraska sports information office for two years. Largin has been assistant SID at Louisiana Tech for eight years and will handle baseball and women's basketball duties at Nebraska ... William Roleson hired at Kent. He was an assistant editor for collegiate athletics game programs and media guides at Host Communications, Inc. ... North Carolina appointed Kevin Best and Matt Bowers as assistants in sports information office. Best was an assistant at Nebraska for the past two years and Bowers was an intern in the North Carolina sports information office for two years ... North Carolina-Greensboro named Jeremy Agor assistant SID.

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING COACH--Paul Keating appointed at Fairfield.

TICKET COORDINATOR--Andrew Henry joined the Marquette staff as ticket coordinator, replacing Marge Fularczyk, who retired after 27 years. Henry was ticket manager at Virginia Military for three years.

VIDEO FACILITIES MANAGER--Wade Loewe named video facilities manager at UNLV.

CONFERENCES

Jenny Ross appointed as communications intern at the Western Athletic Conference. Ross, a Kansas graduate, had worked in the Kansas sports information office since August 1994. Her appointment is for one year.

The Trans America Athletic Conference hired Bob Jacoby as assistant to the director of marketing and promotions. Jacoby recently retired as athletics director at Stetson.

The Big South Conference named Southwest Conference Commissioner Kyle Kallander as its new commissioner, effective August 1. Kallander was Southwest Conference commissioner for 1995-96 and was an assistant commissioner of the league for three years. The Big South also announced it will move its offices from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, to Charlotte, North Carolina, in August.

The Independent Athletic Conference named Stephen Young of Yeshiva as president and Frank Rotunda of Stevens Tech as secretary-treasurer.

The North Coast Conference elected Michele Tolela Myers, president at Denison, to a two-year term as conference president.

Stu Haskell, commissioner of America East (formerly the North Atlantic Conference) since 1988, announced he will retire at the end of the 1996-97 academic year. Also, the conference office will move to the metropolitan Boston area in June 1997 from its offices in Orono, Maine (see additional information under conference members). America East also selected officers for the 1996-97 academic year: Rick Farnham, Vermont, president; Edgar Johnson, Delaware, vice-president; Pat Mesier-McKnett, Hartford, and Wayne Edwards, Towson State, directors at-large; and George Jacobson, Maine, faculty athletics representative.

ASSOCIATIONS

Craig Fink, sports information director at Merchant Marine, hired as assistant director of public relations at the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Fink had been at Merchant Marine since 1994.

Chris Ritrievi, athletics director at Northern Iowa, elected president of the Division I-AA Football Athletics Directors Association for a one-year term. He succeeds Gene Bleymaier, AD at Boise State.
