Founder of Lander athletics to retire

Finis Horne, who launched the Lander intercollegiate athletics program when he started the men's basketball team in 1968, has announced his retirement as athletics director and head men's basketball coach, effective June 30, 1997.

With his 28-year tenure at Lander, Horne is considered the dean of South Carolina basketball coaches. His record of 476-379 has established him as the state's most victorious active men's college basketball coach.

Horne said he announced his retirement plans early to give the university time to make a smooth transition in the leadership of the athletics program.

When Horne joined the Lander staff to form the men's basketball team, it was his first foray into collegiate coaching. He became AD in 1972 and expanded the Lander athletics program to include men's tennis, soccer and cross country and women's basketball, tennis, softball and cross country. The school will add baseball and women's soccer and volleyball in 1998.

After 23 years in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, Horne moved the athletics program to NCAA Division II in 1990-91. His 1993-94 and 1994-95 basketball teams won the Peach Belt Athletic Conference postseason tournaments and berths in the Division II tournament. He was named Peach Belt coach of the year for the 1993-94 season.
