Prospective Division I student-athletes will not have to meet an increased sliding scale requirement in order to be eligible for competition in 2016. Board members pointed to improvements in the academic success of student-athletes already occurring, disparate impact on ethnic minorities and the sheer number of other academic requirement enhancements already on the calendar as reasons for their decision.
The Division I Board of Directors also took action on recruiting rules, bowl game criteria, conference membership and the men’s basketball start date at its May 2 meeting.
Division II moved one step closer to major changes in its academic standards Thursday when the Presidents Council voted to endorse the recommendations of the Academic Task Force.
With budget issues, recruiting policies and championship resource allocations likely to dot the Division III agenda in the coming years, the Division III Presidents Council — the governing body responsible for setting strategic direction — began reviewing membership survey results that could help plot the course in those important areas.
