Jim Steen
Jim Steen will step down as head coach of the Kenyon College men’s swimming and diving team after this academic year. Steen, now in his 37th year at Kenyon, will remain with the college to take on special projects. Steen took over the Kenyon men’s program and started the women’s program in the 1975-76 season. Since then, he directed the Lords to 29 of their record 31 consecutive NCAA national championships and guided the Ladies to 21 of their 23 national titles. Jessen Book, a Steen protégé who was hired in July 2010 to succeed Steen as coach of the Kenyon Ladies swimming team, will become the head coach for both the Lords and Ladies swimmers.
Coaches
Men’s basketball assistants – Manhattan selected Rasheen Davis as an assistant men’s basketball coach. Davis spent the last two years as an assistant at Xavier. He also gained experiences on the coaching staffs at Pittsburgh and Louisville. The New York City native will be returning to his hometown.
Women’s basketball – Florida Atlantic named Kellie Lewis-Jay head women’s basketball coach. Lewis Jay comes from Nebraska, where she spent the last five seasons as an assistant … Adell Harris is North Carolina-Wilmington’s new head women’s basketball coach. Harris was the head coach at Tusculum for three years and an assistant at UNC Asheville for six seasons.
Women’s basketball assistants – Elon added Kate Dempsey to its women’s basketball coaching staff as director of operations. Dempsey spent the past two seasons as an assistant at Presbyterian.
Men’s and women’s cross country and track and field – Richard Stockton named alumnus Jayson Resch as coordinator of cross country and track and field and head cross country coach/head men’s track and field coach. Resch will replace the man who was his coach at Richard Stockton, Bill Preston, who is retiring in June. He will coach the men’s and women’s cross country teams and the men’s track team as well as overseeing all aspects of the cross country and track and field programs.
Men’s and women’s soccer assistants – Loyola Marymount added former UC Irvine assistant Wendi Whitman to the staff. Whitman also spent six seasons as an assistant coach at Long Beach State.
Conferences
The Big 12 Conference hired Bob Bowlsby as its new commissioner. Bowlsby comes from Stanford, where he was previously the director of athletics for the last six years … Jack Key announced his retirement from his role as the Southland Conference’s associate commissioner and chief financial officer. Key began with the conference in 2003.
Deaths
Cheyney assistant track coach Angelo Booker died on May 1. Prior to joining the Wolves’ staff, he was a member of the Cabrini College staff and he spent the 2005-06 academic year as an assistant coach at Temple. He spent seven years at the University of Pennsylvania from 1990 to 1997.
