Public reprimand issued to University of South Carolina, Columbia men's soccer assistant coach

INDIANAPOLIS--- A public reprimand and other penalties have been issued for University of South Carolina, Columbia, men’s soccer assistant coach Bert Molinary for misconduct during the 2011 NCAA Division I Men’s Soccer Championship.

Specifically, Molinary verbally abused a referee after being asked to return to the specified coaches area on the sideline during the game.

In addition to the public reprimand, the Division I Men’s Soccer Committee issued Molinary a one-game NCAA championship suspension for the next NCAA tournament game he will coach, regardless of what institution he represents. The committee also issued a fine in lieu of withholding his transportation expenses and championship per diem due to South Carolina serving as the host site for the game.

“Coaches serve as the standards and role models for our student-athletes and this type of unsportsmanlike behavior is not tolerated by the men’s soccer committee,” said Al Albert, chair of the Division I Men’s Soccer Committee and associate athletic director of development at the College of William and Mary. “We believe these actions discredit the championship for which these teams have worked so hard to qualify. All student-athletes and coaches must conduct themselves in a manner that befits the championship level competition.”
