NCAA selects Joel McGormley to lead NCAA Committee on Infractions staff

Joel McGormley, currently the appellate division chief for the Michigan attorney general, has been named the managing director of the NCAA Committees on Infractions. These committees are independent groups in each division comprised of individuals across the membership and public. The Committees on Infractions determine whether major violations have occurred at NCAA member schools and any appropriate penalties for those cases. McGormley will be responsible for leading the NCAA national staff members who support these committees. He will begin this newly created position on June 4.

"Joel has a wealth of valuable experience and proven results in a number of areas, including strategic management during transition periods and the creation of process efficiencies and improvements," said Donald Remy, NCAA executive vice president and general counsel and executive vice president of legal affairs. "Throughout his career, he has displayed a number of NCAA core values, including integrity, excellence and respect. We look forward to his leadership and valuable perspectives at the NCAA national office."

McGormley has 12 years in public service as an assistant attorney general, most recently coordinating criminal appeals for 56 Michigan counties and federal habeas corpus litigation for all 83 counties. Before his role as appellate chief, he handled civil litigation, appeals and administrative cases on behalf of State departments and agencies.

"This position presents a new challenge and opportunity to combine my knowledge, management experience and love of intercollegiate athletics," said McGormley. "I look forward to applying my perspectives from public service to this position."

McGormley graduated from the University of Toledo College of Law and received his undergraduate degree from Miami University (Ohio).
