Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno died Sunday in a State College, Pa., hospital due to complications from lung cancer. Paterno was 85. Paterno, who coached the Nittany Lions since 1966, won 409 games and two national championships in 46 years. He became the first Division I Football Bowl Subdivision coach to reach the 400-win mark when his Nittany Lions beat Northwestern on Nov. 6, 2010. Penn State was 8-1 this season before Paterno was released on Nov. 9. Family members subsequently announced on Nov. 18 that Paterno was being treated for lung cancer, which had been diagnosed earlier that month. Paterno had been hospitalized since Jan. 13 as his condition worsened. His on-field accomplishments were numerous. In addition to the two national titles in 1982 and 1986, Paterno engineered five undefeated, untied teams and 23 finishes in the top 10 of the national rankings. He was named coach of the year by the American Football Coaches Association an unprecedented five times. Under Paterno, Penn State had 78 first-team All-Americans, 16 National Football Foundation Scholar-Athletes, 37 first-team Capital One/CoSIDA All-Americans and 18 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients.

Other transactions

Athletics directors – Tulsa removed the interim tag from Ross Parmley, naming him director of athletics. Parmley had served in the interim role since October. He is in his seventh year with the department.

Coaches

Baseball – Longtime Ursinus baseball coach and former director of athletics Brian Thomas will retire after this season. Thomas has spent the last 22 years at Ursinus and served as the AD from 2000-2010.

Women’s basketball – North Dakota head women’s basketball coach Gene Roebuck announced that this season, his 25th, will be his final at the helm.

Football assistants – Auburn hired Scott Loeffler as its offensive coordinator. Loeffler was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Temple last season … Fresno State retained Joe Wade as its running backs coach while naming Cameron Norcross offensive line coach and Ron Antoine wide receivers coach … Kansas selected DeMontie Cross as its linebackers coach. Cross spent last season as Wisconsin’s special teams coordinator and safeties coach … Mary Hardin-Baylor added Cody Fredenburg as an assistant who will work primarily with the quarterbacks and receivers. A former Crusaders quarterback and student-assistant, Fredenburg spent the last two seasons as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin … New Mexico named Bob DeBesse offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Ron West defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach, DeAndre Smith running backs coach, Jason Lenzmeier offensive line coach, Derek Warehime tight ends coach, Taylor Stubblefield wide receivers coach, Jeff Mills defensive backs coach, Coleman Hutzler outside linebackers and special teams coach, Archie McDaniel defensive line coach, Ben Hilgart strength and conditioning coordinator and Brian DeSpain director of football operations … North Carolina tabbed Randy Jordan as its running backs coach. A 1993 North Carolina graduate, Jordan spent the last four seasons as running backs coach at Texas A&M … Purdue appointed Tim Tibesar defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Tibesar comes from the Canadian Football League … Tulsa hired alum Dan Bitson as running backs coach. This is Bitson’s second stint with the Golden Hurricane, the first coming as receivers coach in 2001 and 2002 … Wisconsin added Mike Markuson to its coaching staff as offensive line coach. Markuson spent the last 14 years coaching the offensive lines at Arkansas and Ole Miss.

Men’s and women’s tennis – Colorado State-Pueblo head men’s tennis coach Tom Durham has resigned his position. Durham was originally hired to coach both the men’s and women’s squads in 2007 before shifting to only the men’s team before the 2009-10 season. Donnie Beauvais will lead the program on an interim basis.

Men’s and women’s tennis assistants – Guilford named Mark Lapierre assistant men’s and women’s tennis coach. Lapierre will be making his college coaching debut. He played at Wabash.

Sports sponsorship

Maryville (Missouri) will add women’s swimming and diving beginning with the 2013 academic year.
