New issue of Champion available online

The Winter 2012 edition of the NCAA’s Champion magazine is now available online.

Wayne State (Michigan) diver Paige Kortman adorns the cover. She’ll likely be a contender in the one- and three-meter diving events at this year’s Division II Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. Find out what makes Paige tick in her cover story.

Other profiles include the 2011 NCAA Woman of the Year Laura Barito, a former champion in track and swimming at Stevens Institute of Technology who’s now doing postgraduate work in mechanical engineering at Delaware, and Molloy College President Drew Bogner, who’s completing a two-year term as chair of the Division II Presidents Council.

The enterprising features in this issue of Champion include a look at how tribal colleges use basketball to motivate players for life. In the past, many basketball players on the reservation who were revered through their high school playing days flamed out because they had no role models to carry them forward. But a new emphasis on being a collegiate student-athlete appears to be making some inroads.

Speaking of hoops, check out the feature on iHoops, a venture among basketball constituencies, including the NCAA and the NBA, which seeks to establish a more honorable alternative in an often messy youth basketball environment.

Also, the 20-year-old Division I athletics certification program is undergoing an overhaul. Find out how the changes will benefit NCAA members without losing the integrity of the venerable program.
