Legendary track and field coach and administrator LeRoy Walker died Monday at the age of 93. Walker’s career at North Carolina Central spanned from 1945 to 1986. He was also the first African-American head coach of the U.S. Olympic Track & Field team and spent time on the Knight Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics.

Jason Verdugo
Athletics directors – Hamline appointed Jason Verdugo as its new director of athletics. Verdugo has been Hamline’s head baseball coach the last 11 seasons. Additionally, he served as director of compliance for the past eight years and spent the past 11 involved in fundraising … Minnesota named Norwood Teague director of athletics. Teague spent the past six years as VCU’s AD.
Coaches
Baseball – Grand Valley State head baseball coach Steve Lyon will retire following the 2012 season. Lyon is in his 14th year leading the program.
Men’s basketball – Mars Hill chose Rick Scruggs as its head men’s basketball coach. Scruggs was most recently associate head coach at Appalachian State and spent 15 years as Gardner-Webb’s head coach … Richie Schueler stepped down from his role as St. Andrew’s Presbyterian head men’s basketball coach. Schueler held the role since 2008 … St. Thomas (Minnesota) elevated John Tauer from interim head coach to head men’s basketball coach … Virginia Tech relieved Seth Greenberg from his duties as head men’s basketball coach. Greenberg spent nine seasons leading the Hokies.
Men’s basketball assistants – Old Dominion added John Richardson to its men’s basketball coaching staff as an assistant. Richardson spent the last two years as an assistant at Virginia Tech and had another stint at Old Dominion the five years prior.
Women’s basketball – Denver chose Kerry Cremeans to lead its women’s basketball program as head coach … Missouri-St. Louis named Katie Vaughn head women’s basketball coach. Vaughn spent three seasons at Lincoln (Missouri) previously … Newman tabbed Darin Spence as its new head women’s basketball coach … Vanessa Taylor is North Carolina Central’s new head women’s basketball coach. Taylor spent the last 11 seasons coaching Johnson C. Smith … Valparaiso hired Tracey Dorow as head women’s basketball coach. Dorow spent 14 seasons as Ferris State’s head coach previously. Dorow is bringing along Valparaiso alum Kurt Westendorp from Ferris State as an assistant.
Women’s basketball assistants – Wagner added James Clark and Lisa Steele as assistant women’s basketball coaches. Clark was an assistant at Drexel, while Steele comes from Mount St. Mary’s.
Football – Arkansas named John L. Smith head football coach. Smith was briefly Weber State’s head coach before returning to the team he spent 2009-11 with as special teams coordinator and outside linebackers coach.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Washington College tabbed Roy Dunshee as its new head men’s soccer coach.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – Carol Capitani is Texas’ new head women’s swimming and diving coach. Capitani comes from Georgia, where she was the associate head coach for the men’s and women’s programs.
Men’s and women’s volleyball – Florida International promoted Trevor Theroulde to head women’s volleyball coach. Theroulde had been the top assistant for four seasons.
Staff
Publications – Marshall named Jack Bogaczykdirector of publications and editor of the Herd Insider. Bogaczyk background is in journalism.
Strength and conditioning – Kansas State hired Jimmy Price as the strength and conditioning coach for the men’s and women’s basketball teams. Price held the same role at Illinois for the past nine seasons.
Miscellaneous
USA Track & Field selected Max Siegel as its CEO, President and Chair. Siegel has worked in various capacities of the sports and entertainment industries over the past 20 years.
