Linda Schirmeister-Gess
Emory and Henry chose Linda Schirmeister-Gess to lead its women’s soccer program as head coach. Schirmeister-Gess was an assistant at Allegheny the past two seasons. She played collegiately at Slippery Rock, graduating in 2010.
Other transactions
Presidents and chancellors – Felician selected Anne Prisco as its new president. Prisco has spent more than 30 years in higher education, most recently as vice president for enrollment management at Loyola Marymount.
Athletics directors – Southeast Missouri State appointed Mark Alnutt as its director of athletics. Alnutt comes from Missouri, where he was senior associate athletics director for administration.
Coaches
Men’s basketball – Florida Atlantic and head men’s basketball coach Mike Jarvis agreed to a three-year contract extension. Jarvis recently completed his fourth season at the helm … University of New England tabbed Ed Silva as its new head men’s basketball coach. Silva spent the past 11 seasons leading Elms’ program … Saint Francis (Pennsylvania) promoted Rob Krimmel to head men’s basketball coach. Krimmel has spent 12 years with the program in an assistant capacity … SMU hired Larry Brown as its head men’s basketball coach. Brown, a Hall of Fame coach, has won titles in both the NBA and NCAA and has led numerous teams in both.
Men’s basketball assistants – Clemson named James Johnson assistant men’s basketball coach. Johnson comes from Virginia Tech’s staff … North Carolina State elevated Bobby Lutz from assistant to associate head men’s basketball coach. Lutz, the former Charlotte head coach, recently completed his first season on the Wolfpack bench … Kyle Green is returning to Northern Iowa for his third stint as an assistant men’s basketball coach. Green was Wisconsin-Eau Claire’s head men’s basketball coach last season … Southern Illinois chose Tom Hankins as its associate head men’s basketball coach. Hankins spent the past 15 seasons as an assistant at Oral Roberts.
Women’s basketball – Gustavus Adolphus named Laurie Trow Kelly head women’s basketball coach. Kelly spent the past nine years at Northern Arizona’s head coach … Michigan hired Kim Barnes Arico as its new head women’s basketball coach. She held the same position at St. John’s (New York) for 10 seasons. Associate head coach Joe Tartamella will serve as the Red Storm’s interim head coach.
Women’s basketball assistants – Arizona State named Amanda Levens associate head women’s basketball coach. Levens comes from Southern Illinois Edwardsville, where she was head coach for four seasons … College of Charleston added David White to its women’s basketball staff as director of operations … Marquette selected Tyler Summitt as an assistant women’s basketball coach. Summitt, the son of legendary Tennessee women’s coach Pat Summitt, has AAU coaching experience and was a student assistant under his mother in 2009-10.
Men’s and women’s ice hockey assistants – St. Norbert tabbed Ryan Petersen as an assistant men’s ice hockey coach.
Men’s and women’s lacrosse – Meredith named Lauren Scott its inaugural head women’s lacrosse coach. Scott previously coached at the high school level. The team will begin varsity play in the spring of 2013.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Brianne Weaver is Bowdoin’s new head women’s soccer coach. Weaver was the head coach at St. Mary’s (Maryland) the last six seasons … UNLV hired Michael Coll as its head women’s soccer coach. Coll comes from Penn State, where he was an assistant for eight seasons.
Men’s and women’s swimming and diving – York (Pennsylvania) chose Erin Kurtz as its head men’s and women’s swimming coach and director of aquatics. She spent last season as a volunteer assistant at her alma mater, Shippensburg.
Men’s and women’s volleyball – Pacific (Oregon) named Kip Yoshimura head women’s volleyball coach. Yoshimura has coaching experience at Division I and NAIA institutions.
Men’s and women’s volleyball assistants – Northern Illinois added Lynnette Moster to its women’s volleyball staff as an assistant. Moster was the head coach at Olivet since 2010.
Deaths
Larry Geracioti, former Detroit athletics director from 1978-1981, died at age 85 … Rose-Hulman president Matt Branam died after suffering a medical emergency in his office at the age of 57. He was appointed president in 2009.
NCAA committee vacancies
Division I
The NCAA is soliciting nominations for a September 1, 2012, vacancy on the Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The appointee must represent women’s ice hockey interests and may be a coach or administrator. Preference will be given to nominees from the Football Championship Subdivision. Mark Hudak, Dartmouth, is eligible for reappointment. The Ivy League has held a position on the committee since 2000. The deadline for submitting nomination materials is May 25, 2012. Nominations must be submitted online.
Division III
The NCAA is soliciting nominations for two immediate vacancies on the Division III Women’s Soccer Committee. One appointee will replace Brianne Weaver, St. Mary’s (Maryland), who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be from the South Atlantic region. One appointee will replace Robert Anckaitis, Swarthmore, who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be from the Mid Atlantic region. One of the two appointees must be an administrator. The deadline for submitting nomination materials is May 18, 2012. Nominations must be submitted online (access code: committee3 – password: 2006).
