Pat Summitt
Pat Summitt stepped down as Tennessee’s head women’s basketball coach and is now head coach emeritus. Summitt spent 38 seasons leading the Lady Vols, amassing 1,098 victories, the most by any coach in NCAA history. She also led her squads to eight national championships. Associate head coach Holly Warlick will take over as head coach. Warlick has been on Summitt’s staff for 27 seasons and was a three-time All-American as a player for Tennessee.
Other transactions
Athletics directors – Saint Peter’s tabbed Joe Quinlan as its director of athletics. Quinlan has been the interim director of athletics since November 14, 2011 and was Seton Hall’s AD from 2005-2010.
Coaches
Women’s basketball – North Texas chose Mike Petersen as its head women’s basketball coach. Petersen was the head coach at Wake Forest since 2004.
Women’s basketball assistants – College of Charleston named Donchez Graham assistant women’s basketball coach. Graham has previous assistant experience at Morgan State and West Virginia … George Washington hired Megan Duffy as an assistant women’s basketball coach. Duffy was on the staff at St. John’s (New York) the past three years … Providence selected Dan Durkin and Kristeena Alexander as assistant women’s basketball coaches. Durkin was most recently an assistant at Temple, while Alexander comes from UNC Greensboro.
Football – Berry named Tony Kunczewski the first head football coach in school history. Kunczewski had been LaGrange’s defensive coordinator and head strength and conditioning coach since 2005.
Men’s and women’s soccer – Brianne Weaver resigned from her role as the St. Mary’s (Maryland) head women’s soccer coach. Weaver spent six seasons leading the program.
Men’s and women’s tennis – Olivet head women’s tennis coach Mary Anne McMullen announced her retirement. McMullen began coaching the Comets in 2001.
Men’s and women’s volleyball – Kent State tabbed Don Gromala as its new head women’s volleyball coach. Gromala spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Ohio State and was at Ohio four years before that … Newberry hired Todd Hay as its head women’s volleyball coach. Hay was an assistant coach and the recruiting coordinator at Central Arkansas the past six years.
NCAA committee vacancies
The NCAA is soliciting nominations for an immediate vacancy on the Division III Women’s Soccer Committee. The appointee will replace Brianne Weaver, St. Mary’s (Maryland), who resigned from the committee. The appointee must be an administrator from the South Atlantic region. The deadline for submitting nomination materials is May 18, 2012. Nominations must be submitted online (access code: committee3 – password: 2006).
